I rate Essendon 99/2000 and Port 02/03/04 as better teams than either Hawthorn or Richmond.

Talking individual years rather than dynasties and that Essendon 2000 side is a clear cut best IMO. I'd rate Port 2004 ahead of the recent Hawks or Richmond, just off Tredrea's work. It's criminal how undervalued he was and still is. So good that replace Dixon with him and even's Ken's inept coaching wouldn't have stopped us winning the flag in 2020.

“Now that they’re in a position where they could miss the finals, of course the heat is going to come. But it’s probably come 10 times quicker on Ken than it would another coach.”
