Historically has there ever been a 35 year old ruck actually play senior AFL footy? Let alone be good at it?

Justin Madden, Shane Mumford and Gary Dempsey were all 35 when they retired. Stefan Martin is currently 35. Paul Salmon was 37. Aaron Sandilands was 36.

Goldy will start next year at 34. Love the bloke. So loyal. But having a ruckman that age in a rebuild when we have Xerri, CCJ and Edwards who are vying for his role doesn't make sense. He's done.

Haha 'Why does Nobes play all these slow, old guys, they aren't the future, put in Knackerbags 19 year old'.... Few threads later 'we need Hurn and Liam Shiels'

Nah just piss off all the old dead wood, play the kids and bring in an experienced premiership captain and AA captain to give them some lessons on professionalism.

Brisbane did it brilliantly with Hodge.

We need to get our KPPs to develop, in the upcoming draft. Brady and Luff have their work cut out...

Someone falls out at Western, and it just so happens it's to us and a position of need.

Much needed leadership on field, elite trainer/preparer, runs both ways, inside/outside and still in excellent form. Quality player.

Because our senior players are complete dross, and having strong examples from your senior core in a young side is crucial.

We are that far away from the window it is not funny. We will continue to be stocked with high end juniors over the next couple of years but if they can’t learn under correct tutelage there’s pretty much a certainty they’ll end up like our current crop of 26-21 year olds.

Hurn ain’t Hodge. He is a quiet reserved type… that sort of leadership (despite being good) isn’t what we need right now.

The only player in the comp at the moment with the same sort of leadership as Hodge/Mitchell is Joel Selwood. Sloane, Mundy, Luke Parker And Pendlebury are probably the next batch of stronger leaders coming through, but I highly doubt any of them would even be the slightest bit interested in coming here.

Yeah don't disagree on both points, but I don't think it's as easy as just bringing in vets who are genuinely on their last legs.

If we are targeting WCE players, get McGovern. Would actually add to our defence and remove Walker from the equation and allows WCE to shamelessly play Bazzo in a role next season.

McGovern, Corr and McKay might be a nice crop for a few years whilst we develop bloody... Whoever to play that role.

McGovern is almost cooked himself I reckon, but he would add more than Walker and can organise a defence.

Other option could be Howe.

McGovern will cost us a first round draft pick and $800k a year.. he won't leave anyway because he's got a plumbing business to go back to after footy.

Why not get the bloke who captained and actually organised McGovern's development for no draft collateral and a one off fee?..

I understand Hurn is on his last legs, but he still has exquisite skills, an exceptional IQ and he's 10 times better than Walker is right now..

The issue with getting Hurn is, we are at rock bottom and WCE are currently below us on the ladder, they’ve got a whole heap of premiership players on that list and look at what they are dishing up..
Is a bit of buyer beware situation with eagles leaders.
