The 1.5m over 7 years just isn't true though. Sometimes I get a little carried away with the clickbait and overexaggerate because I am desperate for attention. 1m a year over 7 years would be more like it if a team wanted to overpay in order to get Jackson.

Umm ,It’s the way we do things around here ..Amirite

So the performance against Geelong on Saturday makes me think we will not finish last but will still finish in the bottom 3. Lose against the Drug Rats on Friday and cement in at least pick 2. Corws are 3 wins ahead of us (and massive %) while Drug Rates are 2 wins ahead (and massive %).

The championships are now underway and talent is starting to shine. Hearing the SA game saw Phillipou's stakes starting to rise and people talking top 4 or Ashcroft, Wardlaw, Sheezel and Phillipou. I like the SA part - they normally settle very well in Perth.

Norf would also be reluctant to go another SA at pick 1. Could well be us or Norf selling to Port or Crows IF Phillipou continues his BOG performance. Essendon have been criticised for not having enough big bodies in their midfield so Phillipou would be a good option for them - hence another reason for the leapfrog options. If Norf get the right deal with say Crows, they would be tempted to take it with thinking they get the Gunslinger and maybe the Corw's second rounder which would be about right. I hear the knock on going for a CHB as the number 1 pick (Carlton did OK with Weitering in hindsight) but this pick for Norf make so much sense, hence the slide back would be tempting.

So not saying we sell - but it will be nice to be in the position of receiving offers from clubs for our pointy end pick.

I expect there to be a really good top 10 players - reality is that so few of the draft watchers have seen enough to formulate views. I expect a load of differing opinions and less group think this year. I have not given up on Hewett yet - I expect to see him come back in to calculations once he is back playing against his own age group.

With Culley already on the list, a big bodied tall mid who can go forward, it sounds like Phillipou would be too similar a player. Ashcroft will go f/s and Sheezel won't leave Vic, so Wardlaw still sounds like the logical pick for us.

Wouldn't be against drafting Phillipou if he's clearly the most talented player. He looks like a similar player to Culley though, where as Wardlaw would offer something different and give us a better balance in midfield with Chesser being more of a run and carry player as well.

Updated top 50.

A few new names after having them brought to my attention and having a look at their footage. Sheezel's jumped into the top tier and I've taken some names out of Tier 1 as I see 'Tier 1' as guys who could be taken #1 overall. I still love all 3 names in Tier 2 as prospects, but don't see them in contention for #1 overall as of right now - that could easily change with some big performances in the next month.

I mentioned at the start of the year that Sheezel needed to tear apart games this year in order to become a genuine top 10 threat, and he's done exactly that. He's the best performed player this year without a doubt and his endurance base sets himself up really well for a role as a winger, half-forward or genuine midfielder at the next level.

You both raise good points, however from what I have seen Phillipou IMO has a higher ceiling and more scope to develop than Wardlaw.

Besides I don’t think another player similar to Culley is such a bad idea as I reckon both players can also hit the scoreboard and goal kicking mids are worth their weight in gold.

Over and above that we won’t be able to rebuild our midfield in one season it will be a three to four year project.
Last year was a good start with Chesser and I believe Hough will eventually work his way into the midfield.
So if we restocked our midfield in a 12 month period with:

Chesser.
Hough
Culley
Phillipou

That would be an excellent start.

daddy_4_eyes

As far as two big bodied balanced mids that would suite me fine, think a Fyfe and Mundy combination ….. I could live with that…… imaging a Fyfe type that could kick straight ……. lol.

Do you think he has Busslinger at 2 because he thinks that's what North wants / will get?

Some good sliders for our second pick - Hewitt one above, D'Aloia, Broadbent.

Bulldogs often run with Bontempelli (194cm), Dunkley (189), Macrae (188)

Freo have Mundy (192), Fyfe (191), Brodie (189), Acres (189) and they've added in Erasmus (190), Johnson (192) and O'Driscoll (187) in recent times

Bigger bodies isn't necessarily a bad thing if they are athletic enough with good skills

Looking at the SA talent, I am hearing a strong pool this year so Adelaide may well be a willing seller to slide back from 4/5. They may also be willing buyers of an additional first rounder in exchange for a future and I note Sydney have 2 picks (theirs and Melbourne). Of course all that will change if Horn-Francis remains on his initial contract. Brisbane are likely sellers but with their pick likely to be 17 to 20, there will be less interest (but maybe ok for us if we rate Broadbent and Hewett and they are still there). So the interest in trades in this year's first round should be strong IMHO.

Way too early to be too specific but we should be considering the sorts of offers that might come our way if we are holding pick 2 or 3:-
  • Georgiades not getting games and reportedly homesick (these tend to go hand in hand) - would we drop back 5 or so places and swap with Port?
  • Bruhn open to a return to Perth wanting to get decent $ with GWS having a tight cap - would we drop back 3 or 4 places and swap with GWS and gain a ready made mid?
  • Sydney would love a Busslinger at CHB on the SCG so would we go for their 2 first rounders (currently 12 and 17 combined valued at around pick 3) and go back outside the top 10?
  • Suns have 3 x R2 and 2 R3 selections so what would that look? I would think Busslinger is of interest but would they do something for Sheezel to add to their bulging talent bank? They will not be able to take their current number of picks to the draft as they will have less positions than picks? Would we go back 6 positions and also gain picks 26 and 29 (which we could easily on-sell to Lions for their R1)
  • Norf will be thinking about this as they have already shown that they cannot be trusted with a pointy end pick and they may well just accept 2 x R1 a bit further back

So I will be spending time analysing the shape of the draft and the depth. Interesting as more football is being played, I am hearing less people saying it is a shallow draft. I actually think there is something of everything in the first 30 picks and decent tall options to choose from.

If Phillipou continues to shine, I would be tempted to stay put and take him. We will need to be creative to bring in multiple high end quality players. There are 7 tall prospects in this top 15 which is interesting. I would probably say that unless we can be assured of a very good mid, I would not drop back. I have in recent years thought less about the top 10 order as I knew it meant little for where we would be picking. Different story in 2022 (and likely 2023).

So North have consistently drafted on best available rather than need lately. They've also been whacked for doing so and it's been identified as a source of their current woes by the media(the fact that those best available haven't developed as projected at North seems to being ignored for now) and linked rightly or wrongly to the mass walkout of their recruitment staff.

Does this cause them to rethink their approach this year? They need pretty much everything, but most pressingly they need KPDs. Presumably first they'll drag the old warchest out and try their luck luring a top young KPD, but if that doesn't work any better than their efforts at poaching a good mid have, do they consider Busslinger or even Scully or Lemmey? If Sheezel impresses as a mid-forward in the Championships, does the thought of getting the next de Goey (failed trade target) or Greene (failed trade target?) tempt them over the safety of Wardlaw?

Basically, Wardlaw is perfect for us at Pick 1, but might not be perfect for North. Fully accept that 1. I'm rationalising my way to a preferred outcome here and 2. the people actually watching the kids have Wardlaw and Ashcroft as a level above the rest right now. But hey, that gap may close between now and November.

De Goey is a restricted FA and will be an interesting proposition. He comes with so much baggage, it may well be a player the Pies pass on if the price is too high (the club has had more than it's share of racial and gender sexual issues of late). Collingwood can not afford another screw up in the salary cap in the next 3 years as players will start to lack trust in the LIst Management team.

I cannot see Green (I assume you mean Tom not Toby) going to Victoria and joining a club like Norf. They were having problems selling a life at the club prior to this year and this year makes them look even more a basket case.

I was talking about North's failed attempt to get de Goey the last time he was out of contract and trying to remember if they'd also tried their warchest approach on Toby Greene - i.e., this is a type of player they want and Sheezel is in the same mould.

Just as an example of how much things can change between mid year and November, here’s the Draft board’s resident experts’ phantom draft from July 2017: BigFooty Official - 2017 Big Footy Phantom Draft .....Trial Run (Starts Monday 9am)

Top five was LDU, Cerra, Rayner, Sutherland (ended up choosing cricket), Stephenson.

Andrew Brayshaw who ended up going pick 2 and is probably the best of the bunch, was at 21 in July.

Brander at 11, Petch at 14, Allen at 23, Ainsworth at 26.

And even though they went into the 90s, Tim Kelly, who was apparently such a sure thing we should have drafted him a year or three earlier, didn’t get a mention. And they didn’t limit it to the junior class - Jye Bolton, Haiden Schloithe and Liam Ryan (down at 73) were all picked.

Anyway, what was my point? Oh, that’s right. Stay out of my booze!

Have a look at Clayton Oliver in 2015 - a real bolter. Not selected in the trial run at all and not selected until pick 15 in the end of year phantom. The phantom was done a couple of weeks before the actual draft and he had already won the Morrish Medal.

I expect the draft boards to look very different this year as there will be less time and only 1 year for clubs to order their boards.

In terms of 2017 - Andrew Brayshaw had a terrific end of season and hence he jumped up the boards big time. Twomey had no idea who he was in the middle of the year as the recruiters he socialises with were not passing on anything about him.

I have participated in a couple of mid year trial Mock drafts with BigFooty and you really need a full year of football to get it. There are injuries, the carnival to see how the best go against each other, the PSA talent released to play, the WA and SA colts playing SANFL and WAFL, how other players step up in U18 when the top end are in the carnival, etc. I have tended to push out WA names just to get them out there,. One year in the trial I took Luke Jackson for Sydney at 5 and got feedback that that was a massive reach!!!

  • Norf will be thinking about this as they have already shown that they cannot be trusted with a pointy end pick and they may well just accept 2 x R1 a bit further back
The best players are at the pointy end of the draft. You can't win a flag without these players. Yet, you want to trade down?

I was talking about North's failed attempt to get de Goey the last time he was out of contract and trying to remember if they'd also tried their warchest approach on Toby Greene - i.e., this is a type of player they want and Sheezel is in the same mould.
North were trying to get Kelly from GWS.
