Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Fremantle

Williams, Jameson and Dixon all out of contract at the end of 2022. I think with the uncertainty on NN I’d hold off on delisting any for another year - unless we draft Grundy or similar.

Don’t have a great deal of faith in any of them I must admit. But ‘big men take longer … blah blah’.
Would like to see Jameson get a bit more of a run at it. He seems to look more like a footballer than Williams (but who might have more upside?)

Or we simply stick with e.g. Rotham.

All up, why persist with most of the players over say 28? Apart from mentoring roles they will play no part in our next PF.

It worries me Simmo/MC just think that everything will be sweet once we have a full list again. I’m certain we will rebound - but to where? 10th and 10th and 10th …
Anything less than a PF is a fail for a perennially successful club like us.

Lol - how long do you think it will take for us to play finals again? I think we can be back in a couple of seasons if we nail this draft (I think we did a good job with 2020 draft too). A 28 year old probably has at least 5 years left if their body is managed correctly. It would be a really bad idea to delist all our vets in one go, as they provided experience for the young guys as they develop.

All the NicNat chat reminded me of a quote just now.
You either die / retire / a hero, or live long enough to come back from 2 knee recos.
Can Nicks symbol just be dreadlocks, id like to look at the skyline and see that spotlight.

Positives
Barrass absolutely the most dominant player on the ground
Waterman serviceable as a forward
Hurn- Solid from the back as always. Those who say he should go are clueless
Duggan-Provided some nice run and penetration
Bazzo and Edwards were ok too.
Redden and Shuey tried their hearts out.

Negatives
Nic Nat is done as a player. I watched in shock as I saw him pretend to chase someone down, he was jogging, while the opponent ran away from him. And then after he rucks, he just gives up on the play and just stands there, his opponent Darcy was best on ground. It was a pathetic effort from a arrogant highly paid player

Jermaine Jones & Sam Petrevski Seton-I do not rate either of them as a running backman, they are horrible

Nelson- Was the worst tagger ever

Gaff- He just plays too safe, and his disposal reflects this, I'm sick of his HOSPITAL KICKS. His Kicks just go UP and are not direct at all. He needs to fix his disposal.

I picked 28 because I reckon at best we can get back to a PF in five years.

And definitely not suggesting retiring those 28+ all at once just suggesting they don’t play every game - and only if they can be mentors. (‘Managed’) Then if we get success earlier ie. while they’re still around they won’t be as banged up physically.

Every game a 28+ plays means one less possie for someone who may be part of our next ‘dynasty’.

NB: I don’t consider just scraping into the finals a successful season. Might be okay for a club unused to success (eg Dockers) but for me a successful season is a PF/top four or better.

Gaff is on $900,000 a year, How? i think it was the second quarter he f##ked up three touches in a row.Cant he kick hard? He lollies the ball so it either falls short or gets intercepted.O,Neill can immediately replace Reddan.
Shuey needs to hang up the boots.Youve been fantastic but its time to go.
Too many times we conceded a mark or a clean pickup which is never a given in that sort of weather.Keep coming hard coz theres a fair chance they will fumble.
The umpires screwed us.Can the AFL take the umps aside and explain "correct disposal". Letting the ball go as your tackled is NOT correct disposal. Also bumping as the player kicks is surely legitimate as long as its correctly applied.

Waterman took a mark in the third quarter for his second or third disposal for the game.Serviceable? I think not.NN is injured without a doubt.J Jones has a serious dip tho his disposal can let him down.Definitely worth persevering with.

Positives first:

Barrass outstanding - agreed he has gone to another level. His defensive efforts supreme, but was impressed he was actually a bit more attacking. I always wonder why he doesnt try to be the get out kick down the wing from D50 more often (ie when Hurn is kicking out). We seem to always kick it to Darling who has no chance of marking against a taller player.

Hurn - solid game apart form a couple of shanks

Shuey - not at his best, but am happy he has now quietly strung together 10 or so games since the bye

Duggan - he is carrying a knee injury, if he gets it fixed over the offseason with a cleanup or whatever he may just surprise a few next year.

Nelson, Rotham - may not be finished just yet

Harry Edwards - i think he'll make it. Worth persisting with. Needs more core strength / speed / bulk but he has great mentors in TB and Gov.

Bazzo - very good, found another one there

XON - solid, and he also may make it, but will be a fringe player unless he absolutely crushes it over the preseason

Negatives

Nic Nat - knew he was sore going in, but didnt shirk the contest, still was sad to see him dominated by a spud like Darcy. I hope those Freo flogs calling him Fatanui remember this when Darcy turns into a tub of lard in a few years when his knees start to get sore.

Lack of talent - pretty obvious

JJ - couple of brain fades before getting injured. Will be worth persisting with next year.

Ryan - couple of good things, but was a bit undisciplined and a liability at times

Gaff - i think we would be a better side without him. just mailing it in at the moment.

Hough - running out of gas; still good experience for him

Waterman - invisible for large parts

Dixon - seems ok but very slow and no good as a second ruck

Many things to like
Bazzo was great.
XON just an all round solid performance.

A couple of negs.
That string of play in the 3rdQ(?) where Gaff had 3 disposals in 10 seconds and 2 of them went directly to a Freo player and the other was a poor pass to an open player that made it a contest did my head in.
Also Liam Ryans attempts to soccer the ball that end up as an airy.
Yeah i noticed that Gaff triple play at the time, and all 3 were uncontested kicks, absolute shizenhouse.

Fair summary. Add to the list too many players not fit enough to carry a full game. Not to single our Darling in particular but as an example he couldn't chase in the second half with any real pace.

Positives
Barrass was awesome again. Some patch of form hes having
Bazzo and Edwards held up pretty well
Duggan had one of hs best games for the year
Hurn solid as usual
In general our backline held up pretty well.
Xon was good, shows some fight and willingness to contest. Plenty of tackles

Negatives
Lot of players who had minimal impact
Langdon, Dixon, Rotham, SPS, Gaff, Hough, Waterman, Cripps, Foley
Naitanui got smashed in the ruck, looked sore and slow. Hopefully gets a good preseason in.

People complaining about Darcy getting the medal but those stoppages stats show his domination

So a couple of rebuttals on this perspective.
Firstly, the Fremantle player was Switkowski. I certainly wouldn't consider his pace pedestrian. Lach72 might be able to elaborate on this point.
Secondly, Naitanui had just been competing in a marking contest.
View attachment 1476218
Then he had to turn around and start chasing Switkowski who elected to take advantage (always leaving the opposition at least slightly flat footed).
View attachment 1476220
I think it's fair to say there's 7-9 metres between the players at this point.
Switkowski collected the ball and ran all the way from this position to the 50m arc when he kicked.
View attachment 1476224
At which point Naitanui was lunging from him from about 1 metre away.

So Naitanui had made up a fair amount of ground in this time and not given up on the chase.
Now I've no doubt that Naitanui would've run him down when he was 25 and prior to his knee issues but I don't think it was as bad as you're suggesting.
I certainly wouldn't expect Sean Darcy to be able to make such ground on Liam Ryan or Jamie Cripps were the reverse situation to have occurred.

Just on that chase. NN didn't give up the chase but didn't appeared to be running naturally, but more like with a running limp. Switkowski ordinarily is not slow by any stretch. In the AFL mobile app match day tracker you can also go to the record for any category. In terms of outright top speed, Richmonds Markov holds that at 37.4 kmh and Switkowski is 2nd on the list at 37.0 kmh. For comparison Petch's best recorded is 35.7.
You'd imagine Switkowski has slowed considerably to steady for the kick as even Dixon is alongside or going past Nic by that point.

Agree with this. Despite Williams brain fades, it's still early days for him. His ruck work has improved significantly since the beginning of the year. His general play stuff not so much. I think we'll have a better idea this time next year. Jamison looks to have some natural talent but not the body yet. Dixon may be needed as tall forward cover without JK on the list.

Unquestionably Naitanui's knee seemed to be hindering him. He did still close the distance enough so that Switkowski was unable to have a legitimate kick at goal.
With Dixon it's worth noting that he cut the angles significantly and would've run a shorter distance to pressure the kicker.

On the topic of Gaff. Anyone got the footage of early in the last, deep in our forward. Freo play has the ball in the goal square and Gaff just straight up runs away from him. Didn't even attempt to apply any pressure. Even if he is injured it doesn't excuse that.

Yep, I remember it, stuck out like a sore thumb.

So does all the cases of someone having to leave their man to put pressure on someone streaming forward, which caused a chain reaction of uncontested possessions and a Freo goal because no one would (or could) chase effectively.

It looked like he was following a man. But the man he was following was invisible to the telecast, he was protecting the handball over the top forward to the boundary.

Exactly what I thought. It's the type of thing you might do to try and put the ball carrier in two minds. But the next closest player was 40m away.

If you are expecting that every year i reckon you are going to suffer some disappointment.

Hey just looking at stat sheet Barrass is a monster 30 possession at one point.

Is his form better than prime gov?? Better his stat sheet says he is and haven't checked out a wce game in a while.

If Tom is currently better then prime Gov I'm worried about him coming back in and ****ing things up.

I mean we could trade gov & gaff?

This is up my alley

Hard to say as prime GOV was 5 seasons and more weeks than not he was playing on the top dogs

Gaff is done and i doubt he has any value

Waterman was the only one who kicked goals, Darling did nothing. Nic Nat can't even run right now and Jermaine Jones is a bad one on one defender, he gives away a couple of goals every game from dumb free kicks. JJ is naturally a high half forward.

JD worked his arse off and halved a lot of contests.Waterman had four?? touches.Sorry but that isnt enough.
