A 2nd rounder isn't worth very little to any club

If they are smart they will put some together to move up in the draft (Brisbanes pick) or move some toward the 2023 draft
Brisbane will be sending that pick to the Dogs for Dunkley from what I've heard.

You may be right but GC have list number pressure so a pick in the 30's for them may be worth less to them than it would to us...especially when they'll have another top 10 pick plus a 2nd rounder from ADEL to add to the collection.

Ben Long is a GOP at absolute best. If we can get a second rounder, we take it and run. Why is everyone so upset? Most of you guys flame him in every game day thread anyway

They are potentially trading out Fiorini Corbett and Sharp

I think they cut 4 yesterday.

They will lose Rankine but then have 2 picks in the top 7 currently they have 2 second rounders. Without anything added to their assets for the 3 above.

Plus bringing Long in.

And from memory - and I could be wrong. But don’t they have to bring their list numbers in order?
Time will tell. I know if I was a Suns fan giving up a 2nd rounder for a fringe player is be annoyed.

If we do get that then I'd happily drive him to QLD.

Having a heap of second rounders just gives you more ammo to move to the draft order or trade into next years draft.

Smart move from GCS. Longy could easily fill their Rankine sized hole or put him off half back - seems like he’ll gel instantly with most of the guys on that list. Been a fave player of mine, hard at the ball, heart and soul type who had a crack whenever he went out there. Saved your best for last - all the best Longy

Now I know this seems a bit out there but schache is out of contract and may be delisted. I really rated this guy as an u/18, uncomplicated he lead well and kicked well. Still 25 199cm he can play forward, has played down in defence could we’ll turn out a handy bin chicken find. Usable as is and with some hope he’ll blossom late.

Just what we need, another bloke with massive confidence issues.

Cocky alpha types like marshall, steele and max will be thrilled that another bedwettter could join the current crew.

As for ben long- great result him choosing GC.

The guy is no better than an early career geary, albeit quicker- but less endurance.

No great loss whatsoever- 1 less terrible kicker in the 22 is a win.

Long was in and out of the team for two years, we’ll be lucky to get pick 40 for him. I always liked Long because he does all the hard defensive pressure stuff but that’s not something we value so he couldn’t cement a spot. Hopefully we do something half decent with whatever pick we get for him.

There's Suns fans?

I thought they were paid actors from Movieworld

Probably not. I'd say the lure of being closer to Darwin and the ability to see family more would be the bigger one

He is not from Darwin. Met his dad Chris in the Tiwi Islands. he is an Islander. Melbourne is 4.5 hours to Darwin and then another 2 hour boat ride to the Tiwi's. GC is 3.5 hours and a two hour boat ride.

Don't think it has anything to do with closer to family.

You’ve got to love a bargain. I’ll just say this Peter wright just kicked 53 goals and played some good games. Is he still soft, mentally week, a bed wetter?. Some guys just need the right environment for things to click, Imo schache has the talent and for basically a list spot I’m happy to have a look. If nothing else he provides some cover and gives sandy a target up forward.

Talking to the wrong guy about long, I’m the guy that’s been saying he’s not and never had been a lock in our best 22.

Good luck to Ben - Ive loved watching him at the Saints.

GCS are starting to get a few NT lads on their list and they like to playing together. Plus the Darwin boys do like the warmer weather so all the best too him!

Hopefully its a trade that works for both clubs & player/s?

Ben Long has today informed St Kilda Football Club of his wish to continue his AFL career at the Gold Coast Suns.

“Ben has had a contract offer from the Club for a number of months now, so we’re naturally disappointed to receive this news, particularly as we believe Ben has a lot of good football in front of him,” Head of List Management James Gallagher said.

“While the option to stay at the Saints remains, and we would be disappointed to see Ben go, we will work with the Suns to see if an appropriate trade can be reached.”

Feels a bit crap to have players wanting a trade, although it's probably a good thing, means our list is getting a bit more competitive/healthy. Still, I'll miss the way Long would staunch blokes, take big marks on the 50 metre arc and snap some damn good goals. I think he'll be good for Gold Coast, another mature body with a bit of x factor. Can only hope we get a second rounder for him it seems.

"Oh but stkilda haven't even offered him a contract, such a shit club with shit people in place"

Not a pot at you BTW, just at the ones who claim they have an idea, but clearly don't...

The Long stuff is due to us not offering him a deal earlier (if at all) and us playing him in different roles all the time. He's out of contract so there is a fair bit of "we will get what we are offered". I'm disappointed to see him want to leave but not surprised.
A little disappointed personally. Always put his body on the line for us, and I liked watching him play.
Lost one of the few really tough players we have, but not one of our untouchables.

Good from Gallagher. We won't be giving him away for nothing.

Given our list has for many many many years now wilted en masse almost every single time we have had the weight of expectation or a lot riding on an outcome.....

i think we are the last place in the footballing universe where a guy with massive confidence and mental demons could 'make it click'.

I for one am sick of going into important and/or 'must win' games knowing that half our team are practically guaranteed to play like timid little mice when the blowtorch is applied.

He could have beer flavoured nipples and kick the ball like plugger and I still would say no way- not even for free.

We're trying to win a flag- building a mentally tougher list is a key ingredient we are missing.
