Read on another thread.

The 10 years prior to AFL introducing free agency 5 out of 10 flags went interstate.

After free agency 1 out of 10 flags won by interstate clubs.

It would be interesting to see just how many FA's moved back to Victoria and won flags v FA's who moved out of Victoria.
It will be interesting to see what effect that GC and GWS had had on it too.

Vic teams have been feeding off the expansion teams since their inception.

Pretty much just development clubs for Vic's to see who is good and who is a bust

Yep.

Free agency and the feeder (expansion) clubs have been major handicaps on non-Victorian teams. Only those teams that don't have the bonus no steal/able to match at any pick academy rules to help them out have some level of equalisation in place.

Basically, add in the travel handicap and it's a miracle if WC, Port, Cows and Freo are even competitive. And add in a Tassie team and it's not going to get easier for those four clubs.

trade radio seething over the idea of luke jackson picking freo instead of wa

But GWS departures allowed to nominate their clubs rather than a state?

I doubt that Fremantle feel this way. They have prospered quite well out of some dealings with the Suns….. maybe it’s just a West Coast thing 😳

First for Lobb?

Crazy talk.

Agree.

Lobb is about as robust as this picture below  and in one of those strange quirks in life, would you believe, his manager happens to be Andrew McDougall.

What is he worth?
He's surely worth more than a second rounder but not quite a first. Second and a third rounder?

Things to consider in assessing his value:

  • He turns 30 in February 2023.
  • Has a long history of being injury prone.
  • Very inconsistent.
  • Soft as and has an aversion to physicality, hence his reluctance to ruck.

So that IMO, values him at about a mid second round pick and that will be the stickling point in trade negotiations and is in all likelihood why Fremantle have said he will not be traded.
He is worth more to Fremantle than what they will get for him in a trade.

The other total head scratcher for me is just why the hell The Western Bulldogs would want him, he is a couple of decent shirtfronts or big hits away from retirement.

Some interesting comments on draftees contracts from the GWS list manager in light of Bruhn seeking a trade to Geelong. Talking about an initial 2 year contract not being long enough

It’s particularly relevant to the Giants and Suns who as he says often have to pay overs for players after their initial 2 year contract is up just to retain them. Which then puts pressure on their salary cap.

But, there’s nothing to stop GWS extending contracts early.

Sounds like GWS wanting someone else to make decisions on their behalf. We’ve given you a four year contract on peanuts coz AFL rules.

Meanwhile in the back room them favoured ones with unsustainable contracts are eating caviar and drinking champagne.

GWS stuffed their own list management.

They are extending them, they're just having to overpay them to get them to sign rather than request a trade back to Melbourne after 2 years. If it's a default 4 year contract, the AFL sets the price and what club you're at doesn't matter.

True - I’d still argue some of the reported mega deals some of the GWS and GCS players were/are on is partly to blame for their situation.

If there are no spare pennies in the piggy bank that is poor list management IMO - I’d also add I’m convinced WCE have mucked list management up too in recent years.

Yeah it’s just benefitting the draftees themselves as well as the big victorian clubs, who can take them cheaper, because they can offer less travel burden, bigger crowds, finals success and living closer to mum and dad.

These players are happy to move to teams like Geelong and Richmond for less money, knowing they’ve already been paid well above market rate for a few years by these suckers trying to stop them leaving.

Then you get Coniglio situations where dips in form are hyper-scrutinised because the club has overpaid trying to retain him, and it ends up affecting the player and making it look worse.

What? Barely worth a second.

Future third round pick for Blake Acres from Carlton ......
Sounds about right might be something else but future third is the central pick for Acres
