I think we did okay, albeit failed to meet one of the goals which was top 30 picks. That said we couldn't help Jaeger chose the wrong club, and we were always pushing shit up hill trying to sell Tom when Sam made it fairly clear he was on the outer.

Keen to see what we do in our draft night dealings, and the pick trading period.

The talk about 2023 was gonna be bad anyway..we are aiming for 2024 is rubbish.
We are bottom 4 for 4 plus years.
Nonsense.

I would have liked picks in the 20s too, but our next 4 years doesn't hinge on this.

I have heard the hype around Harley Reid and watched his highlights last night. Wow. He looks v. good.

All year we have said we needed to change things up, and whilst JOM & Titch were in the fold, it was never going to happen.
Personally I am not a fan of Stephens - so I look fwd to that changing, but the main benefit with the trades is that with Titch & JOM gone, there is room for growth.

Meek is a big boy, so provided we don't trim him down, he's a PoD to our other listed ruckmen.

What we got is better than keeping Titch & JOM on the list again for another year. We truly are in another era now.

JOM screwed us when he chose Freo. If it stayed with GWS, we would have smashed the deal.
In a way I don't blame him. Gets to go home and be with family and his missus.

Meek I'm happy with. 8 clubs enquired about him apparently.
Stephens will be a very good pick up.
We have Amon. Pick 6. And a potential trading of 3 picks to move up the order.

One thing is clear. Lloyd was right. Sam made up his mind that Tom and Jom had to go now. He had no intention of playing them in the middle next year. This is a full reset. Done his way.

Strap in for the ride.

I'm with you, I'm happy we are going hard at resetting the list but still getting in a couple more mature age blokes in Stephens and Meek. A future 2nd is really handy in a better draft and the mass of picks this year hold us in a good position to potentially upgrade them to a better pick at some stage.

We are keeping this young core together, drafting some very good kids and able to get in an AA quality FA.

Hot take: I don't hate the Titch deal. Pies knew we were moving off him, we get two later picks that should move up after bids and a good young player. Not brilliant, but I'll take it.
My take is that if Cooper ends up being a sneaky good pick in the vein of Jack Scrimshaw we will have done very well.

Otherwise it will be a pretty average trade.

Its going to be top 40, that seemed to be your cut off point for picks.
I wanted 4 inside 25 to be truthful, contracted players of value that we're paying some of the salary for.

Anyways at least we'll have a top 3 pick for sure in next seasons draft.

The Dogs 2nd rounder will likely fall somewhere in the 30s.

I have no doubt Sam was the catalyst for moving on Jaeger and Tom - this was evident in last years trade period as well.
Tom has been a great servant but we need a midfield with speed and penetrating kicks.
I like Jaeger as a person but he did not reach the heights I had hoped. Serviceable but not in the top group of midfielders.
Both Tom and Jaeger will not be around when we will be competing for silverware in the future so I agree with the move.
We will struggle next year but hopefully we can get access to some of the top end talent in next years draft.

As good as we could. Thankfully I’m sure Sam has the patience of the board and has sold them on the long term plan. He defied expectations this year - I look forward to him doing so next year again.

Yup, I'll go with ok.
Listen, we didn't "win" and I wasn't expecting a flurry of first round picks. Don't think we got screwed, and I'm not sure why everyone is throwing the toys out of the cot
And next year might be tough, I get it.

But, those trades put us closer to a flag. Meek, Stephens and those picks (which can improve), plus Amon - our list is closer to a flag than before trade period

Sorry but you just cant spin this as a good result. To those saying youre happy with these trades ask yourself honestly what you were expecting to get a couple of hours ago for trading out JOM and TOM and compare it to the actual outcome. We've basically been bent over and if we're also paying any of their salaries its borderline ineptitude. I seriously hope it somehow works out and Stephens or Meek turn into exceptional senior players or we hit draft gold with one of the late picks, but even then we've still got to take a hard look at the trading strategy as a club because long term its a loser

So you want the two fellas traded in to somehow turn in to exceptional players for it to work out ok, but the guys we let go had not been performing at anything like an exceptional level.

So in other words, we needed to absolutely pull a swifty over the competitions clubs and hope they hadn't been watching us play the last few years, and massively overpay for two aging midfielders, so that we could feel good about ourselves.

Uh, ok.

The melts on here are entertaining and way off the mark.

Both Amon & Stephens are really good pick ups and best 22 next year and Meek provides ruck support. All ticks.

Don’t care whose gone out they’re all has beens and no longer at the club. We lost nothing.

Bring on 2023.
Amon is a great pickup as a free agent, no question.

But Stephens and Meek are question marks at best based on what they’ve shown at AFL level.

Saying you don’t care who’s gone out is questionable - Mitchell is a Brownlow Medallist and 3 time B&F, Jaeger has been at the very least handy the last couple of years while our midfield has struggled, and Gunston is still one of the best forwards in the comp.

I don’t think we got anywhere near correct value for trading out the players we lost this offseason, and I really hope Sammy will get the support he needs from the club over the next couple of years, as we are surely headed for some lowly finishes.

Trade 41, 48 and 52 to Essendon for 22.
Take 6, 22, 24 and 50 to the draft.
Death ride Bulldogs next year so we have 3 top 25 picks.

Look...it's not horrible. I still feel we got shortchanged for two clear best 22, contracted players with leadership qualities.
Hopefully Stephens and Meek will have big contributions in the brown and gold.
With all our list changes this is really the beginning of a complete reset.

Does your view change if we trade those late picks to Brisbane for 21? EDIT - Should be aiming for 22 off Essendon to help them match Davey

Makes the trade look much better.

So we moved on two players who were brought in to win the next piece of silver wear. Omeara was heading home after next year so we got something other that a forth rounder for a 30 yr old with. Bad knees. Mitchell was great for the hawks but was limited to his flexibility and struggled to take ground so his possessions often slowed our ball movement. We picked up a big bull which we have not had for some time. Worpell has his best year will Mitchell injured so gets the chance to go back into that role. Add another preseason into ward, the duke and players like McDonald and day our mids could be quiet damaging. Really like what ward dishes up in his first year. Spin is looking ok if blanck is able to hold the bigger fowards (pre season will help) and free up cj, scrim and Sicily to build from the backline. What did people think we were getting for two aging midfielders. Meek gives us a safety net if lynch has concussion issues so we’re not reliant on reeves for the full year. I’m actually more than happy with Amon also coming in as a high class winger.
Meek will be pushing Reeves for first ruck. Well ahead of Lynch for mine.
