In other words we should've kept pick 2 and guarantee us taking the best available.mid.

totally defeats the purpose of sliding down the draft (fear of go home factor, let's target local talent) if any of that WA talent is taken b4 our first pick.

We don’t know for sure if they were afraid of go-home factor or just didn’t rate the top few prospects all that highly. Maybe we’ll find out one day

What’s with the push for Busslinger? He looks handy but I wouldn’t rate him top ten on talent. And yes I haven’t spent hours perusing tapes. He looks like a Basso clone. WC always take the best talent available with their first pick but sorry can’t see it.

Some poster leaked some information that Gov may retire next year to focus on his Business venture..

A father and son with the last name Ablett were not tall.

Hay Dark Sharks, you think Garry Snr wouldnt make it as a foward in the modern game?
GA Snr would spend more time in the stands and in and out of the tribunal than on the training track these days. He was hard as teak but was a cheapshot merchant of the highest order. You could see that coming out in Jnr in his last year or two as he slowed down- 3 weeks in a row he elbowed blokes until the AFL finally grew a set and put him out.

But that's not the point you were making. Would a guy who stood 6'1" be able to cut it as a KPF today even with freakish speed, agility, hardness and game awareness? Im thinking probably not but he would be a great HFF- which is where he played the first half of his career.

What I'm asking is why weren't the ones shooting up the rankings now outperforming their peers at the actual playing football part of being a footballer?

Hmm yes this guy plays football like a late second rounder, consistently beaten by players x,y,z but holy s**t did you see his agility test? First rounder now. Up there with the players who beat him all year.
no offence but this commentary always bothers me.

People assume he is rising based on media and BF speculation of what the top 15 players look like. But reality is no one has seen any of the clubs draft boards, so there is no proof that Allen was or wasn't already high on some teams boards.

A much more sensible take is that as we get closer to the Draft and these events happen, the media get some tips and whispers of which players are rated and which ones are not. Unlikely combine actually changes all that much, apart from maybe putting a ruler through some players.

Generally phantom drafts on BF (and early media ones) are pretty off the mark until closer to draft night. And as always drafting isn't an exact science, so whoever we take isn't worth melting over, not yet anyway.. maybe in a couple years when things are more clear.

Just FYI in his draft year, it wasnt until late that Cripps was touted as a first rounder. Based on some reactions. that would have been melt worthy.

If Ginbey is off the board at 9 we'll probably get Busslinger.

Not sure I see that as a win TBH.

We then either try Hewett at 13 or run the risk of him lasting until 21, which could totally backfire, particularly if we already didn't pick a mid with our first.

Confused Curb Your Enthusiasm GIF

Best available talent is usually a good principle - especially with top picks. However, we really need elite young mids. Would be tough to get excited drafting a key defender with Gov, TB, Bazzo and Edwards all ahead of him.

I think Snr would have been a more consistent, better version of De Goey.

De Goey is 188cm, to Snr's 185cm.

One on one in the goal square GAS would still be a force. Still run and jump on people's heads.

Very hard to match up on.

Who would you pick Dusty Martin one on one in the goal square. Or Garrt Ablett Snr?

If you gaiz don’t know how to come up with your own nothing 007 answer by now you haven't been paying attention 🍸:moustache:

"Trust me you'll find out soon enough..."

"Let's just say the club is aware.."

"Watch this space.."

"Questions will be asked.."

"There's wheels in motion on this.."

"Do you really think the club hasn't considered it?"

" There are bigger things at play here.."

Me:
All i asked was who's your favourite West Coast player campaigner??

Did you consider Buss at 13 and hope Hewitt slid?

I certainly did consider Buss at 13 and at 9 too.
I thought Hewett was no chance to get through to our next pick, so I pounced at 12.

What also, very much appealed to me, was the pairing of Clark and Hewett as I think they would work together well and be a really complimentary pairing in game styles and skill sets.

Did you consider Barnett at our 3rd instead of Hotton or was he too good to refuse?

Oh yes I did consider Barnett at our third and had Hotton not been there , then Barnett was who I was going to take.

Barnett was in some part what influenced, my decision making, to pass on Busslinger.

Having four picks only, I wanted only one tall maximum ( Be that a KPP or a ruck ) and three players who could to various degrees, address our midfield woes.

I ended up with zero talls.

To be Honest I was undisciplined and got sucked in by the allure of Hotton, I deviated from my plan and it ended up biting me on the arse.

What I should have done is this:

Clark
Hewett
Barnett
Szybkoski ( he was who I would have taken with 26 had I taken Barnett ).

In the real world what I would have done, if I was The Pie Man & Co on the night is:

Live traded a future 3rd rounder and pick 26 for a pick either just after or just before our 3rd pick.

That way I would ended up with:

Clark
Hewett
Hotton
Barnett

That would have been a much better mix of playing types.

When I took Hotten I looked very closely at who was picking between our third pick and our fourth pick.... to reassure myself that I could still get Barnett.

It was.

WB - English and a young Darcy
NTH - Goldstein, Xerri, Coleman -Jones and a young Edwards
HAW - just traded in Meek
COL - who took Keeller with their previous pick, although I was wary of Pies 4 Life as he is a VERY astute and good talent scout, Pies were my 1 concern.

And thats how it panned out. :(

So there you go, some of the thought process behind my selections.

Hopefully no-one is honestly expecting a member of our scouting and recruitment team to lay the club's strategy on the line a month before the national draft? 🤔

That would be incredibly uncharacteristic for our club which has remained water tight on all things drafting in years gone by. It would also open the door for the bearers of pitch forks to reiterate just how directionless we are and how poorly managed we are..

You'll find out who we draft next month you impatient campaigners

Yes no recruiters or part timers can reveal info .

I just hope we don't " out-smart " ourselves at the draft .
Take best available at pick 8 and recruit at least two midfielders in our top four picks .

Unkey dorey ...simple safe strategy success .

Good post, but this is the time of year where we lay all the groundwork for hating our clubs actual draft picks despite it being 2-3 years before we get a feel for whether they were actually bad calls.

Which journo/phantom was the first one to have mail that we were into Chesser? Was one of the few times that the media was correct as to who we were into.

Would be interested to see who they have us taking this year.

Chesser is a tough one - doesn’t look like anybody knew not even the recruiters themselves.

Our interest in Hough was reported well ahead of the draft last year too. I think it was in The West.
