Re: the poll (thanks Jeremias !).

I can't decide between Phillipou or Busslinger as my dream selection.

My heart says we need that x-factor mid/fwd that is willing to hoist one from outside 50 and break the game open.

But my gut says that we might not be able to rely on Gov/Marchy long term and Buss reminds me of Darcy Moore. A player like him could make our defence one of the best in the league.

And my head says that we should take Hollands because two-way running and the wing is the biggest hole in our team.

I don't envy Austin right now.

My gut feel is that we will take Hollands if he is available at our pick. His running power is what we need. Walsh cannot do it all on his own. Acres can help a bit, and Cottrell can help a bit(if he gets a game), but Hollands is perfect to be able for us to not put ALL the onball running onto Walshy.

Hollands really is a perfect mix for us. And his genuine range is right around our pick. He seems a slight chance to go Pick 5, but realistically he is a genuine 9-14 near certainty. Twomey has him bang on 11.

In probably the biggest game of the year, the Championships decider, in the midfield battle it was Hollands and Ashcroft who were clearly the best mids. Not Tsatas, not Jhye Clark, not McKenzie.

I personally would be mighty tempted to take Phillipou if he was still available by some small chance, but i honestly think we will take Hollands, even if some other percieved higher pick is still there. He really is custom made for us at Pick 11. On both Best Available and Best For Us basis.

Where’s Jefferson? Surely he’s a chance to get to our pick and if he does then he’s ahead of all the players mentioned above.

He's right here:

I don't think he'll be in our thinking for 10. Good chance he'll be there at our second IMO and even then I probably would look elsewhere.

I really have a problem with posters embracing reaching for Busslinger or Hayes with our first and at the same time dismissing Jefferson.

We have considerably more defensive tall coverage than key forward coverage. I don’t particularly want to use our first on a key position player. We need more real run in the team and are likely to part company with a number of midfield depth players at the end of 2023, so mid for me. However, if we were to have the choice of Busslinger, Hayes or Jefferson, it would definitely be the forward. He performed admirably this year and has an excellent frame to build on, along with enough quality athletic traits. Will be “a player”.

We need key position depth at both ends, but not at the top end of the draft. Our pillars have 5-7 years of good footy left in them.

Is his kicking any good?

IMO We need players with more polish or X factors in the team

Yes. When played “outside” as an underager was regarded as genuine elite. Fair to say, his high production inside role this season has been less impressive, but by no means poor. I am confident it will balance out as quality disposal over time

l believe the commentary of needing another hard running mid fielder is omitting the fact that Cerra was brought in last year as a additional mid, he can lift at least 20% on last year's output, same with Walsh although still very good was not at his maximum level.

l would be disappointed if we take Hollands, feel confident we will have the choice of at least 1-2 better options that can better serve our needs.

In 2022 we had some of the worst wing options in the competition, the need for another hard running midfielder is not unwarranted. Hollands would likely be an immediate upgrade on LoB and Cottrell but if not immediate, I have no doubt within the next 24 months. He accumulates far better than both, has good skills and is no push over in a contest. He's basically a combination of both LoB and Cottrell and a type we've been crying out for for years now.

We just brought in Acres as a wingman, and O'Brien showed significant improvement, we should be solid in this area.

We need that medium forward that can push through the mid field, we are too dependent on Curnow & McKay we need to evolve this area.

If Humphrey, Philippou or Tsatas are available at our pick I'd be more than happy to pick them up as that player u speak about but if they are gone I'm more than content with Hollands. He's hard working, reliable and fills a list need. LoB and Cottrell just haven't shown enough to say they are quality pieces yet...both still have significant flaws compared to Hollands and have far less upside as well as flexibility.

I actually think Philip is an interesting watch next year. I remember in the pre season this year he was absolutely dynamite. Playing more a wing/half forward role but he was tackling and kicking goals, looked the most damaging option of the bunch. Keen to see if he can find a spot next year if he has an injury free run.

And it can take a tall forward 4 years to come on.

I know we have done flower all right now, but it’s all in our court not to flower it up, as we have the list.
So someone thinking long term and more importantly long term success with planning and developed. Bravo!!
The only concern is, we need to stop losing key depth. You need a quality list of 30, at any one time, to have success.

Agreed. I'd look at Edmenson, binns, teal as later wing options in rd2/3.

Jefferson or George for mine with our first pick.

Jacob Anderson, Phillips, oscar Murdoch or leiu as late options.

1. Hewett for mine. Mids are the safer option in the first round and I just think this kid has all the intangibles to make it.

2. Trade back for two later firsts or a first and early 2nd. Would like to snag a hybrid mid, a Barnett and at 29 a speedy small.

I’m assuming Phillipou won’t last to 10, so I voted trade. If Phillipou is gone, I think I’d like Hotton, so may as well get something extra along with him.
If George hadn’t done his ACL would want him.
We'll definitely trade if our options are gone
