Fingers crossed Riley spends more time in the ruck this week against similarly mobile /athletic ruck like Blicavs. He can learn a lot from him IMO.

TBH I wouldn't be against running ROB behind the ball to fill the hole on Hawkins and Cameron, and play Riley in the middle for a large chunk of the game.

He started off well but has faded into oblivion.
Was always gonna happen..

I’m not sure why some of our supporters get so easily fooled by guys like milera, murph, keays..

They have consistently played a great game here and there followed by a block of shite one’s.

These guys have been doing this for years now..

We all get sucked in by it.. only to be let down again..

I was singing murphs praises about 3-4 weeks ago.. thought “maybe he has hit his straps and found that next level”..

Nup.. it was just a couple of his occasionally good games..

He’s since reverted back to his usual output.

Last two games - Murphy has kicked 0 goals, 0 points and has zero Goal Assists.
Meanwhile we have Newchurch sitting in the two's who has kicked 10.8 in his last 4 SANFL games and has an elite AFL trait (SPEED).

Not to mention resting Tex.

It's the absolute perfect opportunity to rest him and freshen him up for a must win at home against the Saints.
Nicks rewards underperforming players (eg Milera, Murphy) for being in a team that performs well (it seems).
Makes no sense to me. I've always thought that players had to earn their retention by playing well, not by only being part of a happy group.
As for Tex, well, you can bet that he wants to play and Nicks wants to go down there with all guns blazing to get the win.
It's a short-sighted policy that does not take into account Newchurch's good form, the next 3 games and youth development.
Having said that, Nicks et al are privy to many things I am not eg Burgess might have said that Newchurch is not tank-ready for AFL.

Fixed that for you…

Cant bring in Newchurch.. he doesnt tackle enough according to some around here aparently..

he’s too busy kicking goals and thats just not important to our “structure”..

Oh wait.. whats that? Newchurch layed 8 tackles on the weekend?..
Please have a look @ the replay with 14.41 to play in the third. This is just after the Doedee htb resulting in the Pies' 5th goal.
Not sure who is on the LHS (Sholl?). RoB gets a (rare) tap towards Dawson who is partially obscured R of screen. Sloane is on the wing side of RoB.
1683245751253.png

Dawson is held back, no free kick :grimacing:, but Sloane runs forward, lays a tackle, ball spills, Sholl (?) handballs to Keays who sells a dummy and handballs out to Sloane but he fumbles (looks like he was going to kick, changed his mind), ball comes out again but Keays picks up, sells another dummy and handballs out again to Dawson whose kick inbounds goes straight to a Pies player :poov1:.
What's my point?
1) In his new role, Keays has improved his awareness, composure, candy-selling and ball distribution. He has high value in ball movement links, as above. There was a time that he probably would have kicked forward (blindly) both times, but I think he's smarter now. Not long before that, Keays' intelligent chip-kick to Pedlar resulted in a goal.
2) I didn't realise Keays had kicked 0.0 in the last two games but sometimes his value lies elsewhere eg in helping to curb Daicos' influence, also a gut-running linkman. Several posters have commented previously that Keays was in a good position at least twice to receive the ball unmarked, but was ignored eg one was the Rankine miss. Not much had to change for Keays to kick a couple of goals, but for the lack of vision (selfishness?) of a couple teammates.

I get it. You think Keays is crap. We all get it :sneaky:.
You latched onto Keays' 0.0 statistic, in fact any statistic that supports your anti-Keays bias, but this is significant: Keays' record in the Club's BnF 2020/21/22 (5th/ 2nd/ 3rd ) tell us all how highly the Coaches rate him.

As for Murphy, I'm ambivalent. I didn't notice him vs the Pies. That nett-zero suggests he didn't do any howlers nor much that was impressive. By contrast, I "noticed" Milera (awful) and Butts (gave away 2 goals), but their place in the team must be like Murphy's --- they must be of good value to the Coaches at least until someone in the 2's puts in must-pick-me performances.

I don’t know whether Geelong at Geelong is the best time to give someone a debut. Ben Davis says Hi.

Senior players won't be dropped for an extended period. They'll be rested. Even Milera would only need a half decent SANFL game before being straight back in. Think the couple of times that Mackay was dropped and returned without even playing a game in the 2s.
If Milera stinks it up and is retained again/brought back after lukewarm SANFL form then sure I'll agree with you. But you gotta admit we've got more depth than the final Mackay years. Look at Brown and Crouch last year.

I'm convinced some coaches are superstitious and believe that if a team is playing well that bringing in another player will throw out the whole mojo of the team. I think Nick's is also overvaluing some of our players as most people can see we have options in some positions that are just as good and not being utilised. I'm talking about anyone not performing like Milera or any injured players. I know Nick's is coaching to make finals (which is good) and possibly get an extension this year but I think he can also continue giving opportunities along the way. It's a fine balance I know. I just hope we don't lose any players that will improve us over lack of opportunity.

Reality is in all top level sport once you show you can play well at the level the coaches trust you even after a few bad ones - and invariably these guys pop up with another good game and the cycle continues.
Look at the Aussie cricket team. Generally harder to get out of than get in!
And all teams go for continuity - otherwise you end up with a revolving door of the same players (fringe players) coming in and out all the time and you are more likely to miss their good game.
Having said that I would love to see Newchurch get a game - preferably at home - and see what if he does have what it takes at the level. Surely he has ticked enough boxes to get a go

Murphy is playing his role to perfetction according to some on here.

He has entered Wright/Petrenko territory.

Amazing how poor footballers keep their place due to "effort". Tries his guts out but is a limited footballer.

On a cold, rainy and windy day it would just set Tariek up for failure...

I'm waiting to see if any players wear long sleeves...;)

why would you settle for the same 22 when it can be improved upon [?]
It's a good question.
I'd say the Coaches have not been sufficiently impressed by any SANFL performances, not enough to believe that a change would create a better side. As much as we might disagree, they make the decisions and we're left to wonder.
Burgess would have some say in it eg regarding Keane's tank and Newchurch's readiness.

Newchurch in particular must be close and seems a ready replacement for Murphy (Bearded Clam pointed out his 8 tackles in a really good performance last game).

We are not excluding some of our best players because they are tall.

Fog, Walker, and RT are amongst our best ball handling players.

Big bodies in the wet is also a consideration.

Re: Walker in particular, we can bet that Burgess is keeping a close eye on his health/fitness/recovery.
If Burgess thought Tex needed to be rested, he'd tell Nicks.
That's no guarantee that Nicks would rest him, but I'd hope common sense and respect for Burgess' assessment would prevail.

I don't think we've ever been sucked in by murphy or keays lol.
