I watched the flogpies win yesterday, and the biggest surprise of all is that Big Cox has surprisingly turned into a decent footballer.

I am toying with the idea of suggesting playing H in the ruck against Cox. He is roughly the same height, is far more athletic, faster, and has better endurance. H goes wherever Cox goes, negating his marking around the ground/in the goalsquare and then drags him deep into our F50 when the time is right. Pitto can play virtual 2nd ruck/decoy forward. We lose almost nothing by not playing H forward, as his goal kicking confidence is shot to pieces anyway.

People will say H is not good in the ruck. Neither is Cox, but Cox is a pressence around the ground, and H is even more of a threat/better footballer. H is a pretty good defensive player for his size, way better than Cox, who wouldn't have a clue. It might even instill some much needed confidence into big Harry.

It's a radical thought, but I reckon it could just possibly work.

Thoughts folks?
Hopefully Cox has got his 1 good game a year out of his system.

The positive supporter in me wants to believe that the 2nd half saw us discover some of the flair we have been looking for. We were looking for alternatives to the big 2. Cottrell showed the dash we need. His double efforts that allowed the blindside tackle from Motlop (fastest player for the whole round at 34.4kph. Needs to build his fitness so we see that al the ) his run and vision to spot up Durds was great. As bad as we played Dogs only kicked 4 goals to half time and 2 of them were gifts (the Acres clanger and the non rushed behind)

Acres can't be as bad as he has been the last 2 weeks. Worse than anything LOB has dished up.

We need to make sure we aren't chaining the ball out the wings with forward handballs to stationary targets. GWS were doing it and it pretty much always ended in tears.

Teams are sitting on Saad so we need to get more players running the ball out of defence. Would look to bring Boyd into the side if Doc is going to play mid at Hewitts expense.

We haven't been to the MCG since we beat the Cats. I think the bigger ground suits us.

We were smoking finals teams at Marvel last year….granted the MCG will give us plenty more space for our forwards to lead into

Really want to see McGovern forward this week

Remind me which finals teams we “smoked” last year at Marvel? Maybe the Dockers when we won by 30 points but we beat the Dogs by 12 points holding on for dear life while they missed their last 6 shots on goal, and similarly against the Swans we won by 15 points.

Once again I think everyone has rose petal glasses on about how “well” we played last year. The close wins glossed over the fact we stumbled over the line more often than not when we won.

A lot of people seem to have a 'feeling' about this game but I'm just not feeling that feel.

We don't seem to bounce back like other teams after a bad run. We just continue doing the same thing hoping to 'grow', 'play our way', 'look like us', and get nourished.

It's starting feel (and sound) like the Bolton days all over again.

Wayne Harmes was asked if he had any advice for our coach and team.

Drop punts. Forget the other stuff.

Keep the plan simple.
Cited Saad kick 60 meters to Charlie who goaled.

Kick the ball FORWARDS. (Thankyou Wayne) None of this backwards sideways stupid stuff (more or less sic)
Watch 198o's videos to remember how simple and good footy can be.

Nice. And Wayne would know.

Don't forget the learnings and being audited while always twirling twirling.

Which do you see as indispensable- Motlop with his 8 touches and no goals or Durdin with his 10 touches and one goal?

Don't get me wrong I like both players. However I think that the issue us our structure and the hit and hope way we deliver the ball up forward.

If we don't change things up it's hard to see how we can better outcomes.

Just believe they work better together.

Did he mention anything about 'nourishment' ?

KICK IT LONG AND QUICK TO THE FORWARDS

- everybody born before 1980

In all seriousness, it's fine as a base directive when offered, but the nuance of modern footy is how you generate that opportunity cleanly and consistently for your team, and having other variations as tactics and energy levels dictate.

Sinclair got 10 coaches votes
Ed got subbed out the game
Once again Sinclair (who had 40+ touches against us off half back last year) had 14 touches till half time at half back on Ed and was then moved on ball in the second half and Ed didnt follow him. Commentators seemed to to think that he helped turn the game in the third quarter. Not defending Ed but just putting the actual facts out there. Didn't think that Sinclair hurt us much early but that is only my opinion. If Harry X 2 and JSOS kick important goals Cripps and Cerra probably get 10 & 8 votes.

Swans dogs Freo smoked em all (by an average winning margin of about 15 points )

And my glasses are blue not rose coloured and we beat finals teams last year on a stadium we usually suck at……

Yeah and winning the close ones…….what a poor trait…..so glad we don’t do that anymore

Don’t care what others say, it’s the Durdin and Motlop types that offer us some point of difference to the dreary dullness of our playing style.

The problem is what their opponents do to us. Richards, Dale and JJ three of the best 5 players on the ground on the weekend.

Opposition half back have usually been among the best players on the ground against us.

They have to hit the scoreboard like Owies did otherwise the negatives far outweigh the positives.

Cox is all knees and would be loathe to risk big H against him.

I see GWS won contested ball by +6, and lost by 65.

Seems like something Voss would be hanging his hat on in similar circumstances (which will probably be this time next week).

I’ve come to the conclusion contested ball is the most useless stat if you can’t kick the ball, other sides are happy for us to win the clearances so we just give it back to them.
The Tiges won 3 flags in 4 years with this exact strategy, “let them win it and we’ll get it back and hit them with a steam train of player forward movement and chaos”.
The Pies have seemingly mastered a similar strategy.
I don’t think we are close to having the cattle to play this game, so we go slow first half trying limit the damage(minus the Adelaide game), try to run and gun the 3rd quarter and fall in an inadequate fitness hole deep into the last quarter.
Our coaches are flush out of ideas with this list, and this list aren’t good enough to execute even the most basic of skills and tactical concepts.
The sky has definitely fallen, the signs were there as early as our opening game, nothing has changed apart from a few player inclusions and ommisions.
This team has 3/4 weeks to try right the obvious flaws in game plan, structure, confidence and player positioning, or we are as irrelevant as we have been for the last two decades.
10 rounds in last year, I was baffled by how good we had become and the belief that the team had and that nobody could push us around anymore, we had the tools to counter.
Now we are a shell of that team, only twelve months on, with almost zero improvement, baffling.
I’d love to believe, but I don’t, I can’t do or say anything that impacts the outcome, so I’ll watch, I’ll cheer, I’ll facepalm and hopefully not feel as broken as I have in the past.
I really thought this year was “go time” for the blues, false dawns and all that!
Carlton by 32 points🤗

Acres can't be as bad as he has been the last 2 weeks. Worse than anything LOB has dished up.

He was shocking but I wouldn't go that far

When LOB is awful he goes missing, has a couple of miskicks and you don't see him for the day. You may as well have 17 on the park.

At worst Acres was still getting involved in the play. He just couldn't do anything with it

I have more faith in someone who's present but screwing up repeatedly than someone almost completely absent.
