Where does one start with the Dockers?

They’re more flaky than most, way more…. quite unpredictable.

A core of good to very good players – Brayshaw, Serong, Young, O'Meara, Ryan, Pearce, Darcy - but also a group of players well past their prime – Walters, Fyfe to name but two.

Are they Optus specialists? Not really (though we all prefer to play at home!).

This year they have lost at home to North (Rd 1 by 1 point), Dogs by 46 in Rd 6 and to the Tigers in Rd 13 by 15 pts (after their bye).

They beat the Eagles, Hawks, Cats and Bombers at home.

They have had some very good away wins too – Swans in Rd 9 (who were struggling admittedly) and the Dees in Rd 11 (Freo won by 7 at the MCG).

They have some terrific mids – Brayshaw, Serong, Young and O’Meara – who all starred when they wiped the Cats, but to be frank the Cats simply didn’t show up that day.

Sean Darcy, who missed rounds 12-14, had 50 hit outs against Tim English – good stats, but truly effective?! He arguably bested English (no mean feat), yet…. not sure JSOS can handle him, let's be honest he's a monster.

As good as Jack S. was yesterday, I'd consider omitting him (presuming TDK is back for Young) and playing Dow for extra run...but chances of Voss picking Dow?!!

Big H can do some rucking up forward surely. Or does that leave us exposed against the Darcy/Jackson pairing?

Freo had the top 4 possession winners against the Dogs, yet capitulated when it mattered – after winning back the lead early in the 4th quarter….

Sonny Walters had a return to form with 4 goals as did young Jye Amiss, a ‘player to watch’ and Weiters’ likely opponent if things get sorted at the MRO/tribunal.

Luke Jackson had a very poor game.

Serong, Darcy, Henry, Cox, Walters, Amiss were named at the Dockers’ best.

Liam Henry is one who has started to fulfil his potential this year – one for Boyd to man? A hugely talented kid….perhaps Cotts gets him if he’s playing mid/wing?

Hard to talk about negatives after our win yesterday, but Ed Curnow was always a strange selection in my opinion. Cotts back in, Ed out. Simple.

And (hopefully), TDK in, Young out.

I though Young was ok yesterday, just he hesitates in crucial moments….

Points in favour of the Blues as we head west:

  • We appear to have a bit of swagger back
  • Our ‘stars’ are performing – Harry, Charlie, Weiters back in form, a 'fast' Cripps, Walsh, Cerra…Doc!
  • Cuners and Martin are both having a huge influence on the game (and appear fit!). Making us way more unpredictable going I50.
  • We like playing in the West (few WA lads)
  • We’ll likely have TDK back.
  • Our bottom 6 types are playing well - Acres, Boyd, Kemp (as a newbie), Cinc

Dockers are at 1.64 with the bookies, Blues at 2.27. Gamble responsibly!!

The Dockers did us comfortably at Optus in Rd 6 last year – that day, we had plenty of the ball, just were never in the hunt after Q1.

But they had been flying then, Freo were sitting 2nd on the ladder. Right now, they’re well beatable. Though it won't be easy.

Freo’s team against the Dogs – pretty solid on all lines. Chapman almost ready to return. Fyfe all but gone (won't play this weekend)!

It won't be easy - and we'll need to 'turn up'.

We will.

TDK and Pittonet both tests for next week. Cottrell available.

Hard to change a winning team, but the Dockers have the rucks and the better midfield to take advantage.

Based on availability and structure

In Pitto, TDK, Cotts/Binns

Out Young, Ed, Jsos (he would be very stiff)

If Weitering cops week, S Durdin to come in

Hopefully we see the same team frontal pressure, overlap run and using/bringing teammates into the game
Absolutely no way is JSOS leaving this team.

Motlop for Owies. More pace, X - factor and upside IMO.

Dow for Ed. (I must be dreaming :straining: ) Thanks Ed but your time is up.

TDK for Young. No brainer.

Hewy sub again or maybe even Bam Bam sub as he is struggling a bit and George starting ?

SOS has to stay , could also play defence if Weiters was rubbed out. (Think not on suspension)

Cotts stiff but can't leave out Fogs or Cunners.

Dow won’t get up after concussion and a broken nose.

Can't see Boyd coming out of the back 7, if anyone it could be Cincotta, but no real replacement from that type given Doc is playing more of a roaming role.

Kennedy did a fair bit of off the ball blocking, and with 4 clearances from 15 CBAs, can't see him coming out unless injured. He is our best driver through the middle, clears a path even when he can't get first touch

Imo you don’t make any unforced changes to that back 6/7 unless there’s reason/injury to! Where only just getting our first glimpses of chemistry and cohesion with this group now.
And I feel like there’s still a lot more growth in the group yet!
It's currently a back 7 + Docherty & Young, and Boyd is struggling to get in the game. Bit more involved this week, but doing 80% of his work in the defensive half and not making that overlapping run you want to see for him to get more value out of his kicking skills. I'd rather swing Docherty back and have him work on it in a VFL game or two in preparation for a further late season charge.

Further to that, this week we've got to defend Amiss, Jackson for 90% of the game, and Treacy... who's going out if we need to bring in Cowan or Durdin in, or switch Young to defence?

A wet week forecast here in the west, ODN.
Week before this was very wet, 1 dry week, then another wet week.
When it has rained here this winter it has been heavy.
It could be a chance to use our smalls to advantage if we can bring the pressure that we applied against Hawthorn.

The only change I would make based on form would be:

Young out for TDK - better ruck better forward rotation
Ed out for Cottrell - more leg speed

Don't care who the emergency is- Hewett to my eye is still not 100%.

Gets trickier if both Pittonet and TDK are good to go .

Amazing how many posters on here were calling for Voss's head even an hour or so before the game today - so reassuring to me to hear the coach repeat what he has been saying all year - there has been no change to the game plan - only a better execution. Even better to hear him celebrate keeping Hawthorn to 5 points til half time the bloke really knows what finals football is all about also went out of his way to sy better scoring was inlarge part due to availability of firepower in the forward line in the form of Martin and Cuningham...

I was also really to see evidence that Walsh has hit full running fitness as has Cripps and Docherty playing his best game in many weeks ( I really believe we need to manage the Doch).

As an aside watching Young closely today - I think Young's issue is that he is a fumbly player ( marks aside) his general eye hand co-ordination is way below AFL average - this would naturally make him very nervous and lacking confidence. Dont write him off- fumbles to AFL standard can be fixed - it is a confidence thing - but he will always be prone to the occasional costly fumble in defense.

Good to see Jack Silvagni back in good form - he actually took 3 good contested marks today - great to see- another who benefitted from a week off judging by the way he was able to jump in the ruck. Harry is at least playing a dominant CHF role with tackling, pressure and around the group marking - he has dug himself into a black hole as far as set shot kicking goes- slowly climbing out ...slowly.

The rest of this year is preparing for next year and making sure the right list changes are made for the right reasons.

It's not as though everything is the same as it was when we were losing every week. Cuningham, Fogarty, Cincotta, Martin and Kemp have made a huge difference. Taking Young out of the backline, being without one or two of the one paced mids each week, rotating different types through the centre square, dropping out of form smalls like Fisher and Motlop. These things make a difference. Some guys were injured, some were going well in the VFL and not getting a look, or getting a look and getting dropped again.

You simply can't play the game style Voss wanted us to play, with no pace in the side and no forward pressure.

Bizarre comment. Is getting better and better every week.

I think it will be pretty simple changes.

Cotters in for Ed

I think Weitering gets off but if he is suspended I would bring in Durdin of the tall variety.

I don’t think you can drop Jack so if both TDK and Pitto are available, I would go with one of the two. Probably TDK due to better forward craft. Young out

Cincotta probably the only other possibility. He does crack in though and stopped a few possession out the back just by throwing his body into the contest against the Hawks. I would keep him in for now.

I still think we can get more from Saad pushing up the ground. He has been good the last few games but it doesn’t feel like he is having the impact we all know he can.
