It's currently a back 7 + Docherty & Young, and Boyd is struggling to get in the game. Bit more involved this week, but doing 80% of his work in the defensive half and not making that overlapping run you want to see for him to get more value out of his kicking skills. I'd rather swing Docherty back and have him work on it in a VFL game or two in preparation for a further late season charge.

Further to that, this week we've got to defend Amiss, Jackson for 90% of the game, and Treacy... who's going out if we need to bring in Cowan or Durdin in, or switch Young to defence?
Imo I don’t think we’ll bring another tall in(unless weitering is suspended) then big durds will fill that whole. Otherwise, hopefully tdk is ready and that hopefully nullifies one of there rucks. We just need to be ready/switched on for when their ruck go forward so we can mix/match/cover accordingly.
And I think young might be the one that goes out if one of pitto/tdk are ready.

Imo I feel like boydy is starting(more and more every week) to offer that overlap run. I feel like(unless there’s an injury or bad form drop off)we don’t play with the backline set ups.

Ideally:

OUT: Kennedy (rest), Young, E.Curnow, Boyd
IN: Dow, De Koning, Hewett, Binns

FB: Cincotta Kemp McGovern
HB: Docherty Weitering Saad
C: Acres Cerra Walsh
HF: Fogarty C.Curnow Martin
FF: Silvagni McKay Owies

R: TDK, Cripps, Dow

Int: Cuningham, Hewett, Binns, Newman

But will be waiting to see on the status of TDK, Dow, and Weitering.
Jim for ****s sake. Boyd is terrific. Terrific. Don’t look at what he can’t do. Look at what he can. He can play a mile above his height. He’s fast. He’s tough and courageous. He’s a ripping kick. He doesn’t fumble. His bloke never kicks multiple goals. He is merely still building a bit of endurance and learning running patterns to get more of the ball. He will.

It's bizarre that you think a bloke with such a good kick wouldn't constantly get handball receives in our side if he was making runs.

He did go past a couple of times but they didn’t give it to him.

One glaring one was Sos just blatantly didn’t give it off.
He ended up finding a good kick down the middle but I would think when you have the option of a player running past unmaned you take it.

It's not as though everything is the same as it was when we were losing every week. Cuningham, Fogarty, Cincotta, Martin and Kemp have made a huge difference. Taking Young out of the backline, being without one or two of the one paced mids each week, rotating different types through the centre square, dropping out of form smalls like Fisher and Motlop. These things make a difference. Some guys were injured, some were going well in the VFL and not getting a look, or getting a look and getting dropped again.

You simply can't play the game style Voss wanted us to play, with no pace in the side and no forward pressure.
That’s so true our better form is happening due to key personnel coming back and MC actually picking players that can “execute” the game plan better.

But… I will add… the increase in output/impact from Cripps and Walsh in the past 2 games has helped enormously- the latter coming good after the back surgery and disrupted pre season

The above speaks to the point I have been making since the start of the year ....

A coach is only as good as the players he has to choose from and the performance of those players on field this is a proposition that a person either buys into or not.

Performance potential of the 'team' is the sum function of each individual team member. Each individual team member's performance is a limit function bound by ability, fitness, form and opposition at any given point in time (the TLDR summary)

Running a cursory look at the above for players we have seen that the midfield was constrained by returning from serious surgery and no pre-season from at least Walsh/Hewett/Kennedy and Pittonet....We have also observed that Cripps has not been 100% fit compared to even yesterday's game....

So Voss's starting point in round 1 this year - was as bad as the last three rounds of last year as far as access to preferred starting midfield and its ability to perform.

that's your engine room.

now the major complaint has been the inability to score- well the constraints on that ALL YEAR have been the player ability of teh HHF and smalls....Motlop/Durdin/Fisher/Honey even Ed Curnow have been played there ...not finals quality group ADDEd to which ahs been the conversion ratio which has been running at THE LOWEST IN AFL HISTORY

The coach's job ISNT to adjust a game style to suit who they have available at a point in time it is their job to 'code' a game style that is competitive against the opposition FIRST.

The coach isnt responsible for player availability, fitness, form and execution. That is belief is a nonsense.

The game plan has never changed and never required change. In fact the whole 'game plan' thing is a nonsense as pretty much every team plays the same game plan - constrained or enhanced by the players it has at its disposal.

When Voss says it starts at the contest and all ground defensive capability is the major point of focus - he is 100% correct.

People either understand these basics of coaching and playing and use them as reference points in their thinking - or they don't.

Martin and Cuningham only became available when they did.
Kemp has been played consistently since he showed some form.
Cincotta replaced Cowan
Boyd was in as soon as he was available.
Cottrell was in as soon as he was available.
Hollands was played in preference to LoB as long as he was fit.

All these are Voss calls - not this forum and the naysayers.
It is illogical to think that Voss has changed his game plan - because it wasn't working - but that thought process is a nice bicycle to sit on as people start their backpeddling.

It will be a very dure, tough & important games both teams, so much is on the line for Freo too P, a season’s work.
Should be a great game, at Optus stadium under pressure Fremantle can be unstoppable, a real challenge, but a great test for the Baggers.
Freo’s pressure may play to our advantage, got my fingers crossed the boys can bring the 4 points home.
If we do prevail over the next 2 weeks we’ll be worth of a final 8 spot.
Good Blues!!!!!!!!

l believe we need to be careful about drawing too many conclusions until we play better opposition.
lf you look at the teams we have beaten this year they all very much in the back half of the ladder.

We know Voss likes a contested brand of footy, but whether that stands up against high scoring attacking teams that play both contested & outside remains to be seen.

There has been a correction to the game plan the last 4 weeks, that is very evident from early in the season, when we were playing a very slow conservative brand which was totally different to last season.
The style has reverted back to a closer model to how we played last year, let's the next two weeks which provide more clarity where we are compared to the higher ranked teams.

It has been super to get a couple of nice wins and take the pressure off for a month

Now we get the first of two 'loser leaves town' matches (the other being our game vs St Kilda. Whoever wins this is alive for the year. Whoever loses is (in practical terms) playing for next year. Richmond/Sydney is the same too next week - whoever loses probably can't make it.

We have played much better footy over the past couple of games - the team looks totally different. Even just in terms of goalkickers - 5 players kicked multiple goals yesterday.

Freo are beatable, and we play well in Perth. WE just have to figure out how to manage the ruck situation and bring the same tackle intensity and ball movement and I think we win.

The big worry for me is that after the tension built, we release it with a couple of wins, and now find ourselves in the graveyard 5:20 Sunday game a million miles from home. Mentally, getting up for this is half the battle, and it'll be a show of progress if we get it done.

Thought Boyd was pretty good yesterday (was at the ground, yet to watch TV replay).

Offers plenty of dash, is hard at it, disposal is great and he appears to be 'growing' into his role week by week.

Playing good footy, and rocks the long sleeves... keeper...

A bit of an over reaction. Bruest had 10 possessions, 4 score involvements and 2 goals (One when Newman should have made the tackle and one when we were split open on rebound.).
Breust had terrible delivery. Few unnerving moments where he completely lost Newman but never received the ball. Mixed bag recently from Newman plenty good plenty a bit off

I wonder if our first half season game plan was very much like the scene from Days of Thunder where Harry is trying to teach Cole the merits of tyre wear during a race. "Cole you do 50 laps your way, and then you do 50 laps my way, and if you're honest you'll see my way will win". So did we go with the first half of the season 1 way and now the second half another way to compare the pair?

I seriously hope the last 2 games are a sign of things to come and "faith" in the game plan and confidence. I don't think we've ever won both the game before and after the bye before.

Onto this game...

Out: Ed, Young*, Hewett
In: Cotters, TDK*, Binns (sub)

(* Depending on ruck availabilty)

I would've considered Dow in starting 22 with Cotters sub, but who knows how fit he is to play and further would be unfair on playing the kid interstate and flying with a busted nose.

Freo are very hot and cold this season but more hot at home. We've played well in Perth in recent years so that doesn't concern me. I just want to continue to see the focus and intent from our group in this game and the next handful to truly feel we're turning some sort of corner.
