No idea why we’d want Grundy unless it was because we could magically pay him peanuts.
We'd take him for his elite uber woke hipster presence and the learnings, leadership and mentoring he would provide to
our young guns by way of example set. Sort of like brain fertiliser for our ongoing continuous improvement, foundational
development program structure.

That's why it was never going to work at the Dees.

Two hipster alpha male warrior rucks working together for the good of the team ?

Give me a break. o_O

Gawn has a business called the Bearded Jaffle, sounds like euphemism. Not a very appetising one.

Looks like Clark is gone. I think there are some big question marks over whether he has the drive to really become a great AFL player. Seems more interested in getting on the beers. The fact he was the sub this week says a bit about where they rate him I think. It's a shame as he has talent coming out the wazoo but worth remembering. He wanted to go to North last year. The worst team in the league. Just not sure he cares enough.
He looked gassed

We need a Dougal Howard replacement (a decent fullback that doesn't kick scrubbers under no pressure, handball to the opposition under no pressure with 30 seconds left in the quarter, knows when to spoil instead of mark), we need a Gresh replacement (honestly think with Higgins, Butler and now Phillipou there's no place for him, when Sincs has gone into the middle he's shown what we need from Gresh, but Gresh ain't that dynamic attacking mid option) and we need a Zak Jones replacement (injury riddled and is more cherry on top bit of pace to an already top tier midfield, not us).

Essentially it's the midfield that needs a revamp, I think we could move Sinclair on ball for the rest of the year and tell Gresh to play 2's but that then hurts his value and we absolutely should be encouraging him to explore FA options... I think we should absolutely be looking at Ben McKay as a FA to replace Dougal and we need to look at trading picks for a quality mid. I don't think Parish as a FA is the answer, can find the ball but geez would our midfield of Steele, Crouch and a sprinkling of Parish look a little bit blue collar and one paced (and not a good pace at that...).

We've done well in the last couple of drafts with Nas, Owens, Windhager, Pou and even some of the speculative/talent based picks like Keeler, Heath, Hotton, Van Es seem like they were good choices at their picks, I wouldn't mind seeing us ease up on young draftee selections and this year try more for trading in of at least 1 quality mid and do a bit less in the draft space.

Also in the space of 12 months it feels like Billings, Clark and DMac have gone from best 22 to speculative, all mostly from injury but Billings seems to have kind of... dropped off. Still has footy smarts, and in his 1 senior game looked alright as a high half forward, but not what he was. It should be an interesting off season at least. If we do **** all in the trading space I think that means we're going the slow burn of developing the 23 and under brigade and conceding we won't be near the top for a while.

On RoMa. I'd be interested in seeing if he could be re-invented as a permanent key forward. He's strong in the air and has a great athletic base.

His main issue is his set shot kicking but even then he tends to kick the ball straight right through the points which makes you think it is something with his setup that as a key forward could be coached.

As a few have said already and I also worry about is that we let him go, get someone no better and we lose a popular club man who can be the bridge to the kids coming through.

To be frank it's why I was quite annoyed with selection yesterday not bringing Heath in to test it out given how short we were up forward without Max. Especially given the Sandy bye this week. I thought it lacked a bit of courage not playing Heath after some good form.

In short, no. He's a fairly mediocre forward. Another poster suggested turning him in to a CHB which could work well "if" he's able. That, Rucking or traded.
Depends how hard they want to cut.

You left out his ears

If we ever need to get stuff done that requires a massive set of ears.... he'd be very useful in that space.

FWIW my 2 Bob.

I would look for a tall, big bodied ruckman, an aggressive forward who can contest at every opportunity and an onballer .

Marshall would be retained as he is a good player and would be better suited playing in key positions as he contests strongly and is a good mark. He could be that aggressive forward and alternate in the ruck if needed. At present he is a follower/ruckman, and contests and performs well against equivalent sized opponents, however against taller and bigger bodied ruckman, eg Witts, Nankervis, Gawn, Reeves he doesn't have the same impact. This results in the onballers having to play second fiddle to their opponents. This in turn makes our on ballers look slower.

King coul be better suited to the second tall forward with less pressure on him to develop his game. At present he lacks the ability to lead decisively and the aggression to compete in the air consistently. His brother Ben appears to be of the same mould and is struggling at Gold Coast. Maybe junior football was too easy for them given their height and adjusting to AFL will take time as they develop their bodies and forward craft.

The inclusion of an onballer who can take on the opposition would be a great asset to change the midfield dynamics. Steele and Crouch are similar players and maybe better suited alternating. Ross and Clark both play more defensive ground roles across the ground and are important to team structure and releasing the creative half backs and wings.

With regards to our game plan it may evolve for the better if the above was rectified. At present it must be tiring covering the fieliesd to defend and when in position and fatigue has set in kicking to position and to a man can become challenging.

There are overpaid players who are under performing at present and unfortunately there is a tendency to continue to play them in the hope they fulfill their talent and past deeds. I would remove the blinkers and the emotion and take a pragmatic approach with these players. AFL is a business and hard decisions need to be made.

Is there a club out there dumb enough to take Hill off our hands? Probably one of if not the biggest mistakes in our history.

I don’t think any club is that dumb
Would be happy to pay 400k to see him somewhere else

Some of us said this but people still defended Gags like they defended Trout

No there's not, and not at his age now. We picked him up at his peak, in his mid to late 20's, multiple premierships and a very good winger/rebounding half back in 2 teams, we just didn't read where we were at right, Hill could have gone to Melbourne or Geelong and probably looked really good. We've got to cop it and next time his contract is up offer him much less and that's all we can do.

Roma out for a top 10 draft pick

Grundy in ( we pay the full amount that melb are 700k) but only for a low pick.

If they want to change out Marshall they may as well find a guy who will be around for a while. Swap him for Darcy and it's a good win.

We don't have heaps of space in the cap IMO. The JDG money will have been absorbed back into signing up the kids. TDK will be getting $650k and that will take Gresham's space.
I think TDK will end up at Geelong

I'll be surprised if we don't have room in the cap moving forward. The Hanners contract is gone and most of the recruits from 2018's contracts are coming to an end.

I don't think any of the kids we signed would be on huge money and I doubt we would have chased DeGoey if we couldn't have afforded those contracts as well.
