Probably because - and I'm guessing here - we wanted Sonsie and at least one of JVR or Brown, knew that couldn't get all three of them but knew that Sonsie would still be at our third pick if we took Brown but not if we took JVR as Melbourne wanted JVR & Sonsie in that order and if we'd taken Sonsie first, Geelong or Sydney would've taken Brown (they both wanted him) and Melbourne JVR which means by taking Brown first we at least got 2 of our three preferred targets as opposed to only getting one of them if we'd taken Sonsie first.

I said it the other night, I’d look at Mason Cox in their situation. His ruckwork is underrated and he should go somewhere where he is no. 1.

There was a story around recently that Collingwood might be losing a couple of “stars” in the off season. We know that the media throw the word “star” around pretty loosely. Anything to get a click but it would make sense for West Coast to try and entice Darcy Cameron home.

They could do with him. I don’t know about the likelihood of it but it would give Cox a good role and I’m sure he’s up to it.

Not my favourite player but clubs could do a lot worse.

Word is we took Brown because we thought if we took JVR Melbourne would take Sonsie.

That’s a shame, I like brown, I think he’s going to be a really solid player for a long time, him and banks I think there numbers in AFL vs VFL won’t change a whole lot. Hoping they go up a little more with more experience though.
Wish we took JVR though, looks like a star and I think sonsie will be delisted in 2 years, lots of talent but got off field issues.
Still though Gibcus if he gets healthy will be a star, banks and brown will be good AFL players and I think Juddy could be a star. So still a good draft, could have been a great draft though if we had of taken our CHB and CHF for the next 12 years both in the one draft

coming out of U18s, they could go either way and both positions have trade value if even moderately successful - see CCJ.

Being locked in as KPF as a junior isn't usually a great sign

I think ruck/fwd types coming out of the draft rarely kick on. We’ve tried with vickery, Griffiths, Elton, McBean, CCJ, Chol and none of them have looked particularly capable of either role. I don’t think Ryan will offer anything as a forward either.

We did well out CCJ though. I remember Leppard saying that the club saw him as an elite ruck prospect… watching him at vfl level he got smashed by a part time footballer.

ESPN phantom draft had him going to Sydney at #18. FoxFooty phantom draft had him going to Sydney at #18. Cal Twomey who knows the likely draft order better than anyone and him going to Sydney at #18. So it seems 99% that if we didn’t take him Sydney do, so appears they’d have been ‘reaching’ also.

FWIW Cal Twomey in his own ranking of the draftees in November (not where he thought they’d go but where he ranked them) Brown was ranked #23 by Twomey. JVR was ranked #20.

In his August rankings JVR was ranked by Twomey #27 and Brown #22.

So Brown wasn’t a reach according to basically anyone with knowledge in this space at the time.

Personally don’t care on the value of brown. But if one club can “reach” then two clubs can also.

We reached for the stars for Conca, but if another club was just as bad that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a bad pick.

People forget that there is a lot of a luck in the draft. You can't judge any club's drafting based on one player being picked or overlooked.

You have to look at the club's drafting over several years.
