This is the one area of a marking contest I've never understood as to why more free kicks aren't paid. Clearly the defender is literally grabbed and pulled away from the front position. So there is no interpretation where its not holding the man.
Totally agree. Outbodying them, pushing and shoving, holding your ground etc - all fine by me. But not grabbing someone at the last minute and throwing them out of the contest. Don’t understand it.

We had a good mix this afternoon. Really loved the midfield mix, Hamill very good and gives us some pace, Nank, Soligo, Rachele and Rankine back to their best. Hinge finally back to form too. Tex was excellent although a bit too unselfish at times. Thought Gollant competed well and needs to stay in. Actually thought we'd erred in subbing him off for Berry, but turned out to be a masterstroke. One of our finest wins in quite a while against good opposition. It was nice to hop on the train to Yarraville with the scarf on for once!

"At this exact moment, Rory Laird realised his time in the Adelaide midfield, and maybe his career, was coming to an end."

Last week against Melbourne was:
Laird - 16
Dawson - 13
Soligo - 13
Crouch - 12
Rankine - 6

Against Freo:
Dawson - 13
Crouch - 12
Laird - 10
Soligo - 9
Rankine - 5

Against Geelong:
Dawson - 24
Crouch - 23
Laird - 21
Soligo - 5
Rankine - 3

I see it as more of a gradual change they've been working towards. Laird and Crouch have been spending less time in the middle collectively, attending fewer CBAs and spending more time on the bench or pinch-hitting in other roles, while Soligo has had more midfield time each week up until the Melbourne game where he was in there as much as anyone. The big change for this week being Rankine was also in there full-time. Later this year I think we will see more Rachele in there was well with Dawson spending more time forward or back and potentially one of Laird or Crouch not in the team at all. Though Berry will influence things too if he holds a spot.

Obviously no argument on things changing, they have changed dramatically. I just don't think it was a sudden shift this week.
Nicks mentioned it in his presser.

If we look at tonight’s team, and try to project how we’d want it to look in say, Round 20 when some players have fully recovered from injury and paid their dues in the SANFL, I think it would look like this:

Out:
McHenry
Butts
Smith
Laird
Hamill
Gollant

In:
Pedlar (as sub)
Murray
Curtin
Dowling
Ryan
Thilthorpe
(Berry into 22 from sub)

Schoenberg is some sort of chance of establishing himself in the side by this stage too. Jones is another under pressure to hold his spot.

Seriously, how much better will we look with Murray / Thilthorpe / Curtin / Dowling out there than Butts / Gollant / Smith / McHenry. That’s some genuine upside and worth a mention in the “good” thread I thought!

Have you ever played sport in front of big crowds in big games?? It's pretty easy to lose control of your emotions celebrating big moments. They don't rehearse those things. Who cares.
I don’t give a **** what he does. It’s good for the crowd, and lifts the team. Doesn’t mean it’s not naff though. 😜

How bad was Matt Owies goal attempt at the death for Carlton?

Like everyone knows he's an absolute spud but Jesus Christ that was pathetic.

We'd be furious if one of ours did that
Arguably cost them the game, along with especially with that touched shot at goal.

Laird looked really deflated on the bench when Berry kicked the winner.

He looked deflated at the training run on Friday as well. Might be reading too much into it, but doesn’t seem to like less time in the mid. Started the game in the goal square and I thought ah yes something is on here.
