Review The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. Hawthorn Hawks

I'd say no. My only regular involvement there is the best on votes every week. It's less active than here, though I think it has more individual people. A large portion a club conformers though.
You think? I wish it was better - mostly uninformed emotional types. Don't seem to be particularly pro the club though.

I think a good midfield would make things easier at both ends of the ground.

I get starting a rebuild with a couple of key pieces forward and back, big players take longer, fine.

But then after your two years doing that we needed to get into a position to take genuine a+ grade midfielders.

The type who have always been midfielders, always will be midfielders, can midfield all day every day.

Not sure this over investment at either end and then hoping we can create midfielders out of forwards and defenders will ever work.

Like no arguments Dawson has been an incredible get for us, and little blame to him today but does a genuine a+ grade midfielder ever have 15 disposal games? Will Rankine (he’s great too) ever have the body capable of playing all game every game as a midfielder?

Obrien? I know our rucks get tenure but times been up there for a while. I just don’t know how someone can lack so many of the basic skills and still be an elite athlete in the sport.

I’m not surprised the rebuild took a step backwards, that happens, but the types of losses or periods of lack of skills and game plan has been very disappointing.

Good - Borlase, Sholl, Burgess was serviceable but do we really need 3 x glacial Key Forwards in Walker, Fog and Himmelberg? Also thought Jones was OK today.

Bad - Inside 50 differential. Hawks made F50 pressure their priority, applied pressure, and didn’t let us play smoothly out from the backline, causing repeat entries. Outcoached
  • Brayden Cook. Had registered ONE possession up until the end of the 3Q, where he proceeded to pull his finger out, impacting the game far too late. He can’t be a training cone for the best part of 3Q’s though..
  • Don’t let Crouch and Lairds stats deceive you into thinking they had decent games, they didn’t. Absolute garbage in the contest, and the majority of their disposals weren’t contested. Junk. I mentioned the ‘plodding’ of Laird the past few weeks, and he was at it again today…
  • Schoenberg (57% DE), Soligo (65% DE) Smith, Rachele huge concerns for the future, his ceiling looks very short, his appetite for repeat efforts isn’t there, and he doesn’t want to get stuck in.. , Fogarty contested marking..

Ugly - Selection. I know we came off a 99 point win, but we KNEW Hawks are second best in the comp for points scored from transition through their backline, and for their contested clearance work. Our F50 pressure, particularly without Rankine, and with Rachele doing his best training cone impression, is deplorable. I think we should have started with Berry to try and clamp down on exits from the contest..

Our list is in a terrible position

Watch closely Crouch’s 3rd quarter

Won’t happen. As long as it’s mathematically possible, we will be wheeling out Laird, Smith, Murphy and co. week in, week out.
Look, we bring in Curtin, maybe rotate Laird back.

What else, though?

Dowling probably deserves a game, but are we really expecting much from a midfielder grabbed at the end of the draft?

There's not many pushing up.

Dawson came in under an injury could, sat ff for q4. Write off game for him

The types you are referring to rarely speak up. It's only after particularly bad losses (like today) or consistent poor form. The club conformists are the most consistent posters/commentors, so I recognise them as the majority.

That was very disappointing to say the least. Obviously tons of issues but the dropoff in midfield performance was very noticeable.

Rachele is an interesting one, he has faded midway through every season in his career so far and I've always assumed it was fitness related to a degree, and this was a very poor game. You'd think if it was related to fitness it would be improving as he matures a bit. Have to see if this is an outlier as I've liked his season in general.

How good was the West Coast game though?

I bet we leave the highlights from last week on the screen at training again this week.

Just need Nicks to tell everyone how proud he is of them.

Would love to see where our entires went to because he was basically playing out of the square.
Keays had 1 disposal in the last, Murphy had 6 in 3/4 of a game and we want to point to a 21 gamer who kicks 3 goals?

Cook at least uses the ball and actually has skills. Yes he can get more of the ball but he is absolutely the LEAST of our problems.

Didn't see him cough it up, handball to a stationary ROB, squib or turn it over.

Stats vs impact.

The administration will point to the numbers in the midfield and claim a win.

We've completely reverted back again.
Whoever tried hard, whoever had "reasons" for indifferent performance, whatever was tried and not tried; we were thoroughly smashed in the midfield. No player could claim to have even broken even. There was no run, no speed, no dash, no pressure. Pathetic performance by the lot.
Laird and Crouch must never happen again. It's career suicide for any selector from this moment forward. O'Brien, must be sent down to the SANFL as punishment for being such a klutz. Soligo needs protection and muscle in there. This current set up offers him zero of these. Dawson needs to float to the outside more to fully utilise his weapons but spends too long at each scrimmage.

And Nathan van bloody vanilla berlo can be shown the friggin door tonight. He's the architect of this shambles.

I'll move onto the other lines soon.

I'm off to Dr Dan's for some enlightenment...

That’s because he didn’t.

I agree, but you watch the coaches point to the numbers and claim they were good.

Missing finals aside, the season is just quickly being wasted again due to our inability to play the talent. Why the **** are Smith and Laird out there but Curtin and Dowling aren't?

It's just absolute insanity.

Worse than that, we're wasting THIS season and not even making decisions that'll help us be better NEXT season.
