Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

Chad Warner
DOB: 19 May 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #39, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Willetton (WA)/Aquinas College (WA)/East Fremantle (WAFL)

Desperate is one way to describe it. I would call it incompetent.

If this goes on all year Warner being at the club will impede our chances to be successful, not help.

If Warner asked to be traded and we said that we wouldn't even consider it and instead wanted to commit ourselves to this circus, then we need more of a clean out than just the senior coach.
With all due respect I think this is a fraction over the top. For a few reasons:

1. It is December of the year before he is due to be out of contract. None of Gulden, Rowbottom, McDonald, Florent & Hayward had extended at this same point. A few of them would even have been sitting down to hear out other offers from rival clubs during the corresponding period last year, before ultimately committing to us once the season started. So I think at this stage there's nothing really out of the ordinary happening.

2. The above scenarios, as well as previous cases like the Papley situation, would give the club reasonable confidence to believe that he can be persuaded to stay and/or have his mind changed, if it is already set on going. Whilst I may not see the hype myself, the club absolutely values Warner. So I think they are right to try everything they can to keep a player they value that highly, rather than throw in the towel in fear of not getting a full return.

3. There are plenty of examples of teams winning premierships whilst there's a media circus surrounding the contract status of a big-name player, or any kind of media circus. Hawthorn in 2013 would be the most notable example. They were formidable all year because they (presumably) had a strong culture* and killer instinct as a team. There is no reason we cannot have the same. Their use of Buddy in his final season is also a blueprint for how we can also adjust on the run to life without Warner, if we DO get the indication that he's going. Collingwood won last year despite their racism saga, Brisbane won this year despite their Las Vegas saga. I think if something like a player's trade status derails our flag chances, we probably never had any to begin with.

And I say all of this as someone who has made no secret of the fact I'm no Warner fan.

*A bit dubious calling Hawthorn's culture "strong", in light of recent allegations, but it certainly seemed fine externally, and didn't effect their on-field performance at all.

Show me one semi-credible report that stated he asked for a trade.

Amazing how you know the inside word yet not one journo as picked up on it.
They are reporting on a game of golf, reporting on a house viewing, but they forgot or missed the bit where he asked for a trade and the Swans said no.

But somehow you know all about it and did you forget to mention it until now?

I know you are constantly running with the 'Chad is a distraction' line but no need to make stuff up.
Mate it was mentioned before the trade period even started

If Warner asked to be traded, and I don't think he did, we should have kept an open mind to what that deal could have looked like. We didn't have to trade him.

It was mentioned by someone, who knew someone, who knew someone else, on bigfooty.

It had about as much credibility as Cliff from Clematis.
I would have to agree. There is 0% chance Chad Warner requested a trade. Like it simply didn't happen. It would have been the most talked about story in the AFL.
When AFL Trade Radio was screaming out for content and in the current AFL media landscape overall, everyone kept it secret because of???
Honestly, just call it what it is, a made up "story" that someone is trying to sit back and smile, thinking this storm is what I made happen.

Classic character along with Barry from the Barossa and Lance from Lara and many others. Think there was a WA caller named Dennis from Dalkeith. Maybe we should consult him.

Just saw Dennis front Dalkeith at the yacht club this morning.

Poor bloke was having a bit of difficulty with the Tommy Hilfiger knitted sweater slung over his shoulders.

But anyway, once he’d finished chatting to the Commodore about how to keep out those damn undesirables from the other side of the Swan, I did quickly ask him about Chad.

Before he closed the door on his Lexus, Dennis simply said “old chap, I’ve already arranged his golf club membership and booked his future children into Scotch College. He’s coming”.

Maybe a little higher than 0%, but it does seem far fetched to me.

If he wanted to get to Collingwood, then I could see the club and his manager telling him not to bother requesting a trade. As they had no capacity to make a fair offer.

But not either WA team.

Is he having Ivan from Ivanhoe and Peter from Peterborough over in the New Year?

Why bring the Santa into it sport
He wears Saints colours.
It's why have always hated Santa.
It's also why I never told my kids about him until I had to, which is when they started school & when they were already brain washed rusted on Swans fans.
Santa can go & piss off back to his Moorabbin residence with his short arsed elves.

I disagree.
Making Grand Finals impedes our chances of being successful.

Unpopular opinion, but I think Warner is over rated.

Love what he does but h'es no Bontempelli, Cripps, Neale, Daicos, Green, LDU, or even, dare I say it, Merrett.

If he's keen to go & WCE are dangling 2 1st rounders, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out Chad.
Would you trade him for dyl Stephens and konstanty

He is better than half those players you have listed, look I like LDU but come on be fair, Warner right now is way better, and I'd take him over Green just. The others are elite's of the game no shame being worse than Bont, a two time Brownlow medalist in Neale, and a 2 time Brownlow medalist and captain in Cripps!

Disagree. He's good. But when was the last time you saw him put his head over it or lay a bone crunching tackle when they were needed?

I hope he can stay and can do all of the above but if is heart isn't in it, let him go to WCE and see how enjoys being the #1 target every week.

Different mids have different roles, sure great we’d love every mid to be Bont, they aren’t. Wouldn’t let him go unless he wants to. We are a better side with him than not.
