Reality is two early wickets and it's done,

Need Boland to have every ounce of luck to not find a Fielder and protect his stumps.

I feel bad for Usman because how do you bat in such a tight run chase with the night watchman the next day?? Protect your own wicket and let him slog it around and could very well be out 2nd ball, or hog strike and score safe runs so the total comes down so when or if either of you get out there's less on the board for others??

Wonder if the tail will be the difference at the end of this. England tail scrapped another 45 runs at 8 fer whereas our lads fell in a bit of a hole.

It's going to be down to our batsmen - Khawaja, Head, Green and Carey to make this work. Something tells me Green and Carey will be the ones to hang on and get us over the line.
I hate the argument that wickets 6-10 are the difference. Sure, having a strong tail can be important, but the batsman should be scoring the runs. There should be more critique of batsman failing or not consolidating a start, rather than ascribing too much blame on the bowlers. See Root, Stokes and Brook in the second innings.

I do wonder, given our apparent longish tail, that it isn't actually worth having a Boland or Lyon come in at 5 or 6 on a regular basis to try and eek out a 30-run partnership with a recognised batsman. Obviously it's a stupid idea, I should be ridiculed for it, but... :drunk:

At night, the nightwatchman's job is to take as much strike as possible and not go out.

The next day, their job is to get off strike as much as possible, make quick runs when they have the strike, or get out trying either.

Usman should just play like he would when a recognised batter is there.

They have a fair head start on us as we still look somewhere between reluctant and willing, that positivity is missing at this early stage. Only Travis Head looks like he'd fit into their aggressive mode of play.

I've never seen such big discrepancies between what I saw live and what the DRS comes back with, ever.
I played the game at various levels for 50 years. I umpired a lot of games during that time. I think I have a fair idea what 'out' looks like, and where the ball is going to go. Both the Smith decision and th Bairstowe one look very iffy.
I have never liked DRS, both how it is executed scientifically and how it is implemented. It was introduced to eliminate the howler of a decision but has just added extra shades of grey. The last tour of England when a plumb LBW was not given out at Leeds should have raised red flags galore with those running test cricket, but nothing was done to fix it as usual.

Easy for Uzzie - bat normally and treat Boland as just another top order batsman. I have a lot of experience batting either with (when I was an opener) or as a night watchman (when I batted down the order I was always the designated night watchie - made 3 of my highest scores in that role batting on the next day).

I’ve made it to tea every night. I’m out the door at 6:30am for work though :(
Maybe Head can do a Gilchrist and smash a century off 50 balls, and it'll be over before lunch....

In the first innings yes, get some quick runs and get out to let the recognosed batsmen take over. However in the 2nd innings, just bat normally to build a partnership so that when you are eventually dismissed, the batsmen have as few runs as possible to chase down. If you can be there for the winning runs, even better.

I have full faith in Uzzie, Head, Carey and Green and Cummins to get 170 on a flat deck but I do think the key is Boland and how much damage he can do , if he can get another 10-15 tonight and he and Uzzie get the lead under 150 it really does release a bit of pressure.

Yeah it depends on conditions, but if your natural style is more defensive (makes sense for a NW) and the pitch is good, you don't want to risk a draw by clogging up the works.

Depending on rain the draw may not be a big risk tomorrow

I get the FTA channels through my Foxtel satellite, but not 7 Bravo for some reason. Maybe it depends where you are located?
Possibly. I can get the main FTA channels plus 7mate 10 Peach and SBS Viceland on Foxtel, that’s all the extras.

What a pompous thing to come on here and submit

That's what I thought.

Have seen him post for years and he comes across as arrogant and unlikeable.

I understand his taking a break to work on himself and his mental health or what not. Good luck to him in that regard.

Most of us come on here to post as a bit of pisstake when the cricket is on to distract us. Sure some absolute shit gets spoken but that is the beauty of it.

Boland should continue what he was doing last night....look to slash at anything wide....duck the short ball.

Get the target under 150 and go from there.
