Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Reid didn't play until round 4 last year and then only a few appearances until being in the team from round 11 through to the end only missing round 13

He had arguably his best season.

That doesn't discount the concerns people have with him and his recovery this time. I'm just saying it's a bit early to call his career done.

If I a dollar for every time someone said that Sam Reid was cooked ...

Hes toast.
Sorry.
Its shit.

He had a injury that he carried into the GF.

That injury . Has no progression or time frame. As per swans medico.

Just read between the lines.

Might just wait a bit into the season.
Yeah fair enough.
However nothing has progressed since September of last year. The injury hasn't healed. No pre-season and the medicos and I quote.
"He continues to be assessed by our rehabilitation team on a weekly basis to determine his best management plan."

That doesn't sound promising, at all.

I hope he's okay and gets back soon. He was phenomenal last year and was a huge reason why we finished the year so strongly (GF aside of course).
We don't deal in fact around here. Take a Bow Sir. Spot on. Reid is now heading the same way as Franklin getting the shit kicked out of him by a few on here but by all means put both him and Franklin in the garbage and see where Amartey, McDonald & McClean take us by years end.

He got some pre season under his belt with full training and game time. Then had a set back.

Not great, doesn’t fill you with hope but he did get back to being ok so I’m not giving up hope just yet.

I don’t for one second have amazing confidence in those thoughts but personally just not ready to write him off.

However I do remember Bradshaw’s slow season long injury that never came good and eerily has that feeling.

I have noted Horse has been a little dismissive about a Reid return.

Perhaps Horse has finally lost patience. Who knows how Reid was selected for the GF but at some stage Sam must have said he was good to go? The fact he returned to pre season with the adductor not healed and rehab’d would not have impressed Horse or Raper. The latter would have given Sam an off season program. Was it followed?

Surely it has to be one of the worst calls in sports history to name Reid as a starter

Sam Reid
Sam’s rehabilitation has failed to progress over the last fortnight due to pain in his hamstring tendon. After further investigations and consultations with external specialist, Sam will now not run for 4 weeks and we don’t expect him to return to play before the midseason bye.

I'm not writing him off yet. If he comes back and plays like he did in the back half of last year, GF aside, he will get another year (assuming that's what he wants).

He wasn’t good the back half and finals especially imo

There is no way he plays on next season

He was inarguably excellent in round 22 vs the Pies. Also had some very important moments in the Qualifying Final.

I agree he's done, but suggesting he was anything below very good all of last season excepting the Grand Final is rewriting history.

Didn’t say all season
My point was he was very good all year. He wasn't bad towards the end of the season. He had a bad Grand Final. That's it.

Outside of that, he was arguably our most important player last year.

I agree he was very good last season.

Then he wasn't.

The problem is this injury is career ending at his age/ contract profile etc.

Its the same as Alex Johnson and Naismith.

There comes a time where the club will just tap someone on the shoulder.
