Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

There is one poster above, criticising, nay lecturing, a number of people for suggesting Reid might need some time off in the 2s to re find some form and he's earning earning plaudits for this criticis. Who when it suited him had been incredibly obsessive and anti a particular player and sticking the boots into his form and suggesting he was not good enough.

Frankly to see him now criticising other people for expressing a view on Reid that is mild compared to his on the player he had in his sights, that is extremely interesting.

TBH I don't think this is helpful (particularly from a mod).
It leads, as we have seen, to speculation and has the potential to cause unnecessary division on the Board.

If you do have a problem why not name the person or alternatively address the issue with them via PM?

A fair point, But a Mod is still allowed to speak and speak his mind in general conversation.

I have no official problem with the person, he is within his rights to have posted by rules and guidelines.

but your right, hiding behind it is pretty gutless of me.

Yes I am referring to DG, who I have no persona beef with but had a lot of negative things to say about McVeigh in the past, including implying he was soft . Now that opinion is fair enough, looks stupid, but there's nothing wrong with holding an opinion.

But to call others now spoiled brats for their opinions on Reid is hypocritical. That's just me speaking, he's allowed to, I'm just pointing it out.

As I've said a couple of times I have zero problem with Sam Reid, but at the moment you can't make a case for dropping anyone other than him or LRT when Tippett becomes available. That's the reality, because Pyke is not going anywhere on current form. And good luck explaining to a small/running player why he's being dropped for a 200+cm forward, despite the small being in better form than Reid.

We've got strong depth in that ruck/forward area now, if we had another key defender I'd be much happier.

We could drop Everitt and move Goodes into the midfield/wing permanently.

Not sure Goodes is ready for that this early in the season though.

I definitely understand the sentiment but I worry that Goodes isn't able to play a midfield role at the moment. Hopefully he's going to be able to shrug off the limited pre-season and the knee concerns, but at the moment he's definitely a forward first and a running player second.

BF fans have a proud history of voicing opinions which in hindsight have often appeared hasty or ill-considered. Some have had to eat humble pie in the past but we should accept that having tasted that pie they have good reason to advise others not to do the same. In the end it comes down to trusting that the Swans staff, coaches and players know a lot more than any of us do. I don't know how hard Reid trains, how many sacrifices he makes for the team, whether he's carrying any niggles, if he's finding it hard to cope with more attention, whether he's on track for his own personal development or if he simply has a persistent problem with his bowel movements. I back Sammy because his coach does and that coach has my enduring respect.

Exactly DG, he is playing to the potential he has always has been pumped up to be, now an outstanding leader. Having said that I wish it had happened a lot earlier in his career. Infact he is now into 15/1 for the Brownlow.

Had to admit he was a lot slicker than Gaz junior the other week. A Charlie for Macca would be nice but the overall performance of our midfield could make it harder when guys like Jack, ROK and Hanners are also in the mix for votes.

After watching many games last season and seeing the start of this season, teams are aware of Sam's jumping ability and body spoiling him before he gets a chance to jump. When tippet comes into the team it is going to make the defenders concentrate on something more then sams ability to jump over packs and take marks and you will find his confidence will grow with tippet playing in the same forward line.

Hang on ... as I've pointed out SEVERAL times, I've changed my opinion. As John Maynard Keynes said, "when the facts change, I change my mind". McVeigh WAS soft, now he's not, hence my change of opinion ... why am I being singled out here??? Now you're having a crack at ME for standing by Reid in the face of criticism? There are several posters here with more vocal negative opinions on players, and I'm not hiding behind anything (SM on Grundy; several on Everitt; most on White).

Now this poster, Papermate, is still harking back to the McVeigh thing ...

And it does seem several posters are of the same opinion as me on Reid (and were on McVeigh, too).

There are so many more inconsistent posters on this board, posters who'll change their opinions as often as they fart. I really don't give a toss, it's just a bit difficult to fathom why I'm apparently the ONLY poster who's ever had a strong opinion about a player ... and I used the term "spoiled brats" in the context of posters clutching at things to whinge about when there's really not that much to whinge ... fck, why am I even bothering?

But specifically to you, CAS79: I never realised you had such a problem with me, I'd always thought you were one of the more considered board members.

Sam won't go out for Tippett. Tippett was brought in to help Reid and make Reid a better player, so you can throw that suggestion out the window.

I have no idea who will make way, but I know it won't be Reid.

I understand we can't give up on Reid, because the ultimate goal is a Reid/Tippett tandem but who are you dropping for Tippett right now? (No doubt this will be moot when it comes time, as there will be some injury which allows Tippett to come in)

I don't have a problem with you, though I was disappointed last night

I respect that you changed your mind on Mcveigh and had no problem with you attacking the issue on Reid by adding your opinion.

But after all said and done, that you, attacked people for behaving like spoiled brats and been obsessive with their negativity on a certain player.

Like I said you may do as you wish, I just thought after years of the McVeigh posts in the manner you posted it was odd that you would criticise somebody for holding an opinion that you equated to being obsessive and spoiled.

I did find it to be hypocritical and unjustifiably self righteous. So I said so.

"Spoiled brats" is an attack??? You obviously have a problem with me ... I have no idea why.

Not personal, I enjoy reading much of what you have to say, I explained as to what my issue was and wrote about it.

Anyway, to get this back on topic. Hobart was windy and gusty all forwards from both teams struggled to get into the game. Conditions were nopt great for the big men up front.

Reid though doesn’t get a charmed run forever and the seniors is where you put the 22 players most likely to get us win, the argument of how well they can develop in the NEAFL is irrelevant if their not in the best 22.

I’ve still got Reid on that list but when Tippett is available, I’m not so sure. I’d like him to be as playing well together would make us a very dangerous forward line.
