Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

The problem with Reid is that he seems to have regressed. He never used to drop chest marks and now he's doing it on a weekly basis. I understand that defenders aren't going to allow him that jump at the ball that he got when he first came on the scene, but there's no excuse for dropping chest marks.

Anyway, after watching a reply of the game on Saturday he wasn't as bad as his stats suggest. He was directly responsible for three goals during our run with good play. Overall his pressure and ground level skills are fantastic.

Who would have thought after his first year it would be his marking we'd be worried about?

I've been burned on my previous opinions of Jetta and McVeigh....... Reid will come good just like they have.

Goodes has said today that he can't wait for Tippett to come back so he can spend more time in the midfield.

I don't have a problem with what is happening with him generally, he gets involved enough to add value. He can take the big marks on the wing when the defenders aren't looking for body contact or getting in his way. Once it's in our 50, that all changes. He has his run blocked, or he is bumped and Reid becomes relatively ineffective. He does get the ball down most times, and his hand balls were good off the deck on Saturday.

Having said that, when you're free in the 50 and Everitt spots up Parker instead, that means teammates aren't trusting his hands. As a few posters have pointed out, this will change with more strength and experience. If he can take a big leaping mark, as well as out body and position his opponents, he'll be a force to reckon with.

He has only just turned 21, sometimes kids of his build take a little longer to bulk up (he isn't a J Patton). I think after his first year we all thought this kid's going to make an imediate impact, I think the opposition thought the same & man he up accordingly. He is doing a good job, getting to the contest, taking the best defender (most times 2) & bringing the ball to ground. This is also making space for our mids to storm forward & kick goals, as evident on saturday.

I think we'll see a marked improvement in him when Tippett's comes in.

I'd guess Everitt didn't have the time to put that much thought into it.

"Hmmm, there's Sammy free but gee, thinking back...he did drop an easy one earlier. What if he drops this ? There go my goal assist stats. Gawd knows it's hard enough when I have BF fans riding me each week. What to do ? What to do ? Oh look, now he's waving at me. How embarrassing, it's not like I can pretend I haven't seen him. Or can I ? Should I just do the cross-eyed look ? Does that even work ? What would Goodes do ? Where is Goodes anyway. I'd kick to him in a minute. No hang on .... didn't he also drop a sitter, and I think he dropped one last week too. Oh look, there I am on the big screen. Gee I like my new hair. What's that ? Move it on quickly ? Alright, alright already. It's bad enough when the opposition hassle me let alone my own team. Now where was I ? Oh yes, the screen...no, not the screen. The ball. Oh shit, how long have I had the ball ? Where are all the defenders ? I must have been holding this for ages. Mmmm, I wonder if it's holding the ball if you don't move and no-one tackles you ? Must ask the Geish. Whoa, now they're coming at me. Wow, there must be an entire team of blue and white guys and they all look angry at me. I expect our guys must be the other ones then. The red and whites ones. Oh yes, I can see on the screen that's the same colour as me so it must be us. Now, let me see. Can't give it to Reid, Goodes is a bit iffy. Macca ? Oh damn, he's on the bench. Should I just wait until he comes off ? He's always reliable no matter what Goat and Bedders used to say about him. Hang on, who's that waving ? ROK I think. He seems to be doing alright and usually pots them from there. OK. ROK it is. Quick look around. Check shoelaces (don't want a clanger). Indicate...no, that's wrong. Why am I thinking of my driving test ? I must not get distracted....Gee Bolton's hard today. Could barely get his shorts on earlier. Must be using some of Hirdy's 'supplements'. Hang on...Where was I ? Oh yes, quick kick to ROK. Oh F&^k, a clanger. Our fans are gonna roast me. No wait, phew, it went straight to Parker. Ha, a bit of luck there. Hope no-one on BF noticed."

I think Sammy needs more room. He comes a long way up the ground and rarely has a clear lead. That is whats being asked of him, and he does that. If he could start from the goalsqaure he would be better off, but would we? He is playing the role asked of him. So he drops a few, he is expecting a multiple avenue contest every time he goes to mark, even one on one. The coach keeps playing him, so he is doing his job. Unlike Hawthorn, we don't need a bag of goals or something special from our KPF to win games.

It's not gonna get any easier this week with either lonergan or Taylor
An excellent opportunity for Sam to continue his improvement by testing himself against the best opposition at high intensity.

And he'll have Lake/Gibson going at him in round 7, and McPharlin in round 8, and his brother in round 9, and more quality defenders for the rest of the season.

Sam (Remember, 21 year old KPF, serious talent) will continue to test himself against good opponents again, and again, week after week for the next little while.

If we see steady improvement during that period, one day the penny will drop and we will see Reidy spread his wings, and I can't wait for him to become a superstar of the game.

But patience is required, some folks need to take a chill pill. There's no point in slagging him or writing him off based on goals per game, and those who are I'm confident he will prove them wrong eventually.

Right now he's a key structural point in our gameplan, he performs his role IMO very well most weeks, creating contests and taking marks around the ground as well as linking up with the mids at HF. He is also good at creating space by drawing the opposition's best defenders.

I can't see why there would be any reason to drop him, stalling the experience he is gaining now could only be harmful for his development.

lol made my morning coffee even better, brilliant..

SM and Grundy would be who you stabbers are after. His hatred of Grundy is obsessive.

I haven't posted in this thread much less criticised people for wanting to drop Reid...

Edit: I stand corrected, I have posted in here, but point remains I think CAS meant bedford.

Agreed. Also think it would be remarkably close to what does go through Everitt's minds when he has the ball ...

I wasn't having a go at Everitt. I think he's generally a very good user of the ball under pressure and even more so for a big bloke. He's improved quite a bit over the preseason and I thought he played well in Slowbart. The point I was making (though I admit to getting just a teensy weensy bit carried away) was that Everitt, like any other player under pressure, would have picked the first good option available. Reid may even have been better positioned but he spotted up Parker, who was well positioned, hit him with a nice pass and a goal resulted. Kudos to Everitt and Parker but it doesn't take anything away from Reid.

bungee, please make a thread on the Bob Skilton Bar and give us weekly updates on Everitt's thoughts...

That post made my morning!!!

Thanks Bonza. If it's all the same I'd prefer to get inside the head of different players as and when the mood takes me. I'm not always in the mood. I swing anywhere from Goat like crankiness to delirious with pleasure and itching to make happy. Nice to have made your morning though.

ps. Has anyone else noticed that in the bottom corner of this screen there appears to be a player in white taking a love doll from behind ? Am I right or just a filthy mind ?

If that's the players on field I believe that is Harry O and Tippett?

That's exactly how I read it, great stuff made me laugh :thumbsu:

Really odd performance tonight.
Wasn't just that he wasn't holding his marks, he was totally misjudging the ball.
It was almost as if he forgot his contact lenses and couldn't pick the ball up in the lights.

Not suggesting that was actually the reason, but even when he's been down I at least had hope he would bring the ball to ground if he didn't hold the mark, tonight was almost too bad to be true without a specific reason.
I really find it hard to believe he is that devoid of confidence.

Worked hard tonight for no reward, he geta there and fluffs them mistimes his attempts.

Pykey should work with him on marking

Pretty much.

Mind you I saw at least two packs get crashed and Reid working his tail off up the ground for the footy. He does seem slower than I remember though....
