Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

It's fun to talk about but it ain't going to happen. We are going to struggle to fit everyone under the salary cap as it is without trading for another mature age player. Only option will be to draft youngsters on minimum wage and develop them - and why not, it's worked so far.

The only alternative I can see is the one suggested by Jack-Pak where we trade players for better draft picks.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

stokes will not go
he is a genuine small forward who can kick a few
varcoe has never done this

byrnes is too inconsistent

As much as I dont like saying it; if we go by the last 23 weeks; Byrnes and Varcoe have easily outshone Stokes.

Stokes does not have an iota of defensive pressure in his body; Varcoe's one percenters are a major reason why he stays in the side.

Byrnes does the same, but to a lesser extent IMO.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

TMA , are we still so sure of this? Him being dropped ..sorry sore groin for the Prelim could indicate that he is on shaky ground

Numbnut, why would he have been dropped after he played well against the Dogs ?
FFS,players do get injured and have to miss games

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

Good ol' forrrest. You are saying that Varcoe has never kicked goals as a small forward?

No mention of Blake? Must be a first!
becoza varcoe cant rip p a game like stokes
stokes has more potential to kick a bag

varcoe will move throught the middle more and more

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

I have sat here and read this whole thread for no other reason than I am trying not to think about this weeks game. Here are some thoughts:

I think we will try and be more active this trade period than we have recently but rather than recruit stars we need to look at guys that we can get more from than there perceived market value. Pav, Burgoyne are known stars and proven to be worthy of serious coin. It won't happen. I would target players at perenially under achieving clubs or poorer clubs who we may get more out of. This means, Richmond, North and Freo. I am also happy for the club to pick 28 year olds etc.. because the longer we go with our core list the less likely our current stars will play 22 rounds. More senior players in the mix would mean we can rotate players more effectively and keep our cream fresh.

Freo

Peake if he got his head and body right may offer more than Stokes/Byrnes. But there would be no helicopter involved this time around.

Headland - could be cheap and we know he can be a super player in a good side.

North - Hale maybe an excellent fit for the Cats and I think he has under achieved at North.

Richmond - 3 months ago I would have said Tambling but he has unfortunately turned the corner. Other than that they all seem fairly crap. The club should still take a look.

The above is just a sample but I think the club could identify more players that are under achieving that are in a similar position to these guys. Think a Farren Ray more than a Shaun Burgoyne.

Lovett and Gumbleton may be worth a look. Maybe Essendon will feel guilty for screwing us last year. Thorpe at Hawthorn is another option who hasn't come on.

Lloyd, Hall and N Brown could all offer something for a year but this doesn't seem to fit the clubs approach. But do we really want the doggies to get Hall too cheaply? For peanuts they are all worth a spot for a year.

The guy I would throw the kitchen sink at in terms of draft picks and fringe player trades would be Boak at Port. Now this is very unlikely because of the Burgoyne situation. There would have to be a Byron Pickett type scenario where the players says I am leaving at the end of my contract anyway so you may as well trade me now. The discontent at Port may spill over more than just Burgoyne. I would give up our top 2 picks and a Stokes to get him because I think he will not just be a super player but he will complement our midfield beautifully. He can get his own ball but he his more of a runner than our curent elite midfielders. Burgoyne would fit this bill as well but I just think he will demand too much coin.

The reality is: if we come out of the trade and draft with 1 very good footballe this year then we will have done well.

Not sure what the cats plan but I wouldn't mind heavily trading for the right player. Boak or Dangerfield are one thing but I wouldn't be keen on any other midfield type players.

A Gumbleton/Thorp/Kennedy type would be nice but I also wouldn't be against an older player.

Guys like Pavlich, Petrie, Bradshaw, McPharlin, Polak, S.Stevens, Henderson would all be on my radar. Basically KP player who can play back or forward. The more versatile the better regardless of age (within reason).

Boak is a player I'd give up say a 1st and Ryan Gamble for.

Rate him enormously, and he'd probably be much higher rated if he played for say Collingwood instead of Port.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

Yeah that's the one that stood out for me as well ! Mumford ? Has had 2 seasons at the club as a Rookie, never played in a real under age comp, never groomed by the system, raw as hell and way overweight - and in two seasons plays over 10 senior games ! That is a pretty good effort by a big man - who they take longer to mature.

For me Mumford has definitely done enough to be promoted off the Rookie list, kept and developed. He looks a real prospect with Ottens aging and Blake seemingly having plateaued. Bad call. Too much upside. Do not trade Mumford. He may yet end up being a very good long term player for Geelong - who has bulk, strength, relative speed, aggression and has demonstrated he has enough raw talent to work with at this point in time. You do not get that combination often. I personally see him overtaking Blake next year. If he gets better at his tap work, and he should, he will overtake Blake.

Lastly Geelong do not need a power forward in trade week. They have Hawkins who is getting better, and will be a good player in a year or two, and Mooney will be around another season, maybe two - that allows Mitch Brown to develop (or maybe Scott Simpson). So with the Premiership window open - Geelong need to trade for a KP backman.

With Taylor being able to take the third tall opposition forward or being able to swing him forward for a change up or injury, Geelong would have a far less predictable forward line, another potential KP marking forward and even better backline when he plays back. He could be the 'swing player' for us. Taylor is a nice mark and kick. Traits that most good tall forward line players would like. If MacGuire goes cheaply - grab him. He surely would not cost us much and with Harley and Egan gone at the end of the season, and Tenace, DJ and Lonergan are traded/delisted, the salary cap should not be that affected with the inclusion of one such player.

If we trade Mumford not Blake, I will go postal on a few blokes down the club

It won't be as powerful or as classy as a Rooke to the Max, but it'll still hurt :D

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

Stokes had a good game against the Bulldogs, so he was hardly dropped. Byrnes is lucky.

What about fricken Varcoe, Mr 1 percenter, and that's about all, 10 disposals a game.
This guy is lucky, wish Hogan was playing instead.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

I really rated Polak as a player before he kissed a tram. I reckon he's a lot like Egan but obviously would only look at him at bargain basement prices.

But anyway whay about Everitt. I'm hearing he's been offered to Carlton for pick 27. I really like the look of him and if we picked him up he'd be an excellent replacement for Milburn or Harley.

I like your thinking Dan but I would be asking the question why a kid taken at 11 in 2006 and is in only in his 3rd season is already being touted as a potential trade for a late twenties return (or why a late twenties pick is being offered).

Either it is the classical rumour-mill moving into overdrive or there is a concern over either his attitude or body or both.

It is the same reason I'd steer clear of Mitch Thorp from Hawthorn. Was massively hyped when he was drafted but has been hobbled by injury. Even when he did play he didn't look anything like the superstar he was supposed to be.

I think Geelong could find a Milburn/Harley replacement through the draft without giving up a pick for a player.

A guy called Andrew McIntrye is playing SANFL footy, was named in the State squad this year as a CHB and was (I think) a Crows rookie so has been in the system previously. Get someone like him late in the draft and release Taylor from CHB.

Same sort of result. But I like the thinking, certainly nothing wrong with looking into it come trade week if he is on offer, just question what would be required to do it.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

watching the VFL now I've seen two..

Sean Rusling; a few injury problems, playing down back in the VFL so don't read to much into stats, looked the goods a few back, might be worth a punt if the price is right?

Aaron Edwards; Not a traditional key forward but can lead, mark and kick a goal more importantly, as a third 'tall' could be damaging, doesn't look to fit into North's plans. I know his a bit of a twat but we could straighten him out..

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

North have 0 key forwards, if Edwards can't break into that lineup then he's just not good enough. Plus everything I've heard about him suggests a real dumb ass who just doesn't quite 'get it' when it comes to AFL level footy.

I wonder if we will have another crack at Lovett this year.

Like the sound of McIntyre, considering Taylor was plucked from the WAFL.

absolutely steer away from Edwards. Out of the three of them (Gardiner, Cousins and Edwards) Edwards is reportedly the bad boy of the bunch. :p

drug issues, strong links to the underworld figures in perth etc. etc.

In terms of Rusling, what is Collingwood doing with him, i thought he was meant to be there next Rocca???

That would be a very good trade if we could pull it off - but alas it will never happen. Surely Port see the value in the guy - and is a potential 10 year player. I reckon we throw in Lonergan, DJ, Tenace and Blake with our first round pick - and if Blake is a Premiership ruckman - we might just get the deal over the line !

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

Did you notice how effecive Chris Bryan was in the 2's saturday.
Collingwood don't seem to rate him but when I've seen him play seniors, he's always given them good ruck service or a target as a key post forward.
At 197cm and 99kg, could help out the likes of stevie j, byrnesy etc, not to mention his power in the packs, cause he's not an unco ruckman who carn't bend.
He can kick straight too.
Like to see him do a full pre-season with us.
Just looked him up, looks like he's about 28, maybe to old now.

You're joking, right? He was terrible for Collingwood yesterday.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

Of the possible trade options mentioned here the only two we would consider imo are Matt Sphanger and Everitt. Both have good size, play in defence, are young and still teachable. I like what i have seen of both of them, in fact Sphanger will be a star. Neither would be be outrageoulsy expensive like some others mentioned.

Also with an early draft pick West Coast might be interested in Gamble or Stokes and the doggies might reckon Lonergan would offer something up forward.

Unfortunately these two will appeal greatly to other clubs as well. Melbourne is about to turn their priority pick into a very good player! Gold coast must pounce too.

Would you guys consider a trade of our pick 7, Seaby and Spanger fror Travis Varco?
