The international rookie rules are a bit of a slap in the face to those kind of players, all these big foreigners who barely know the game getting a crack

Respectfully disagree. These big foreigners are great athletes and have promise otherwise clubs wouldn't waste their time. They are not taking the place of local players. They are counted outside the list unless/until they do a Mike Pyke and make it! Then they deserve to be there, wouldn't you agree?

The AFL have set up the international rookie scenario. Also (I know not entirely relevant), how about Rocca and Bennett going the other way to USA? I think it is a good way of growing the game and generating interest.

At the end of the day if you have the talent, (and probably more importantly the dedication and work ethic a la Jason Blake), you will get a go. Yes there are always exceptions to the rule but many of those exceptions are due to a coach's personal bias rather than anything else...

It must annoy a lot of the "reasonably talented " players, that some schmuck who cant even play AFL gets a heap of opportunity because hes just a big ****.
I 'played with' and currently coach two blokes in Clubbies in the Ammos who are just ridiculously talented blokes; one was a TAC Cup fella a long while ago and just got sick of footy for 8 years but reminds me of Nick Dal Santo with a tough edge and the other (and skipper) is a bow-legged midget rover who played high level EFL and just happens to grab 30+ touches a week every week - in what is not a high possession standard of footy - and is just untaggable; both could have played much much MUCH higher, but one got turned off by the super-serious nature of Unders Rep footy, and the other makes Brent Harvey look tall...

There are plenty of very talented blokes out there who either don't want, or won't get a shot for all sorts of reasons. My view is that - and I love my 195cm+ blokes ;) - passing over fellas because they run funny, or have an odd body shape, or are small is simply dumb. But I'm not recruiting.

Yeah there are plenty of talented guys miss the cut for sure. I know a guy who was good enough but did a collar bone so missed his spot in the TAC system then was stuck playing suburban footy then just slowly drifted completely out of it. His old man played for the Pies but wasn't in the line of sight for a F S selection.

Once you get a job and a life risking everything for another crack is a pretty tough decision.

Plenty of others like a mates nephew -he was a gun junior but got a year at Collingwood before being delisted and will probably never get back to the AFL despite being a super talented kid. Tom Lee had the same experience but at least is getting another chance.

I've read that Cameron McCarthy has been invited to the Gold Coast for the draft and therefore people think he is likely to go early. Is this a true gauge on where players may be picked? And do we know of anyone else that has been invited?

Pretty sure around 15 are invited each year just to cover all bases. Plenty of talk that Brisbane are interested in him at seven but I'd be slightly surprised to be honest if they took him. I see them taking someone who will play from the get go to reduce the chances of them getting 'home sick' after their first contract runs out. Surprised Sheed hasn't been linked to them, for that reason. I think that because WC seem to be heavily into him, people find it somewhat easy to assume he'll get there. I know people have their reservations about his ceiling, but for someone who has dominated as much as he has, I think he is a pretty safe bet to become at least a good-very good player.

Anyway, back to McCarthy, the Dees won't take him but I reckon one of the Pies, Blues or Freo will end up with him (unless of course Brisbane to go with him).

Anyone know if next Thursday's draft will be shown on Foxtel like previous years? Checked the Foxtel guide but it wasn't listed and can't any info online.

Foxtel's guide doesn't have it listed but the AFL's broadcast guide has fox footy covering the event

Getting pretty excited now especially to see how the first round plays out and what the surprises will be this year

He said Tuck, who became the first player to record three strikes under the AFL's illicit drug policy in 2010, had not put a foot wrong since moving from Hawthorn to Adelaide, and has a steady job and girlfriend as he completes the rebuilding of his life both on and off the field.
"He has got elite foot skills and there's his physicality and he is very different as a player to his father (games record holder Michael) and his brother Shane (recently retired Richmond on-baller)," Collins said.

"He is a left footer, while the other two were right footers and he has got deft foot skills and is deceptively big and strong which is the modern midfielder that all clubs are looking for."
He said that unlike other players who had encountered drug taking during their careers, Tuck no longer "touched it" and was ticking all the boxes in regards to employment, his professionalism and his whole life.

I've said it before, and I will say it again and again, ROOKIE LIST THIS LAD! 190cm, 94kgs, good pace, good skills, good story and a clearance beast! Only 26 midway through next season. Get on board the Tuck Train...

May well be a Sandy prospect? Otherwise, he's a 23yr old 189cm forward, who was meant to be a mid before Ainslie suffered a clutch of injuries to their forwards...

Some reading:

At 189 centimetres, the 22-year-old's combination of height and agility make him a difficult match-up for defenders.
He's too quick for a traditional full-back and too big for smaller, running types.

He'll be 27 in July, so I say no for us. Would be a great get on the cheap for a team in the top 8 if they get a few injuries though
Carl Peterson is also 27 next year and currently training with us. Yes i know he could sign with Sandringham but no doubt we are also keeping our eye on him for a possible rookie position also. (Don't think he would but don't think age for rookies will matter with us).

I'd be happier rookie-listing guys that are in the 20-25 age bracket, ie: guys that if they show they've got skills/talent, they can be promoted & be in that perfect 23-28 age bracket when we are aiming to make finals again (2016-19)

Anyway, I'm not that fussed. That's just the way I reckon we should be going about it

Although, if Trav Tuck/Carl Peterson were taken on as rookies, I wouldn't be disappointed

Only 10 more sleeps.... :D :thumbsu:

.... then can we start the List Management: 2014 Trade/Draft/Free Agency thread ;)

I think we should start one already. methinks that at least one of Armitage/Gilbert will be off at the end of 2014 (besides Hayes).

Mind you, I did a google search for "Josh Bennett", and found this guy...
