2014 Academy/Father-son Discussion

Can't be bothered reading through all the pages and I didn't see it on this page so I'll just ask. Is Brisbane going to take Tyler Roos as a father-son pick in this draft? Before you ask, no, I'm not interested in getting him to Port Adelaide. I'm just curious as to whether the Lions are going to take him.

He's a pretty speculative pick, if you ask me.

The more I think about whether or not we will draft Roos the more my opinion becomes speculative.

Be a rookie pick if anything at this stage you would imagine. Just depends on how many picks we have goin into the draft. And how many academy players we take. We also have another potential father son in josh Clayton who is probably a bit ahead of roos at this stage. Don't think anyone will be able to give you a definite yes or no answer until his name is or isn't read out at the father son bidding table.

Excuse my ignorance but what are the rules regarding father-son and academy picks, I understand the bidding process but are we allowed to take more than one academy and one father-son. So for example could we only take 1 father-son (eg Roos) and 1 academy (eg Hammelmann)

No we can take as many as we want of either or combined provided we have list spots open

Would rather be wrestling fans and odd than vanilla. But hey, no doubt only doing trendy things than being yourself is rewarding, right?
Being yourself IS trendy, my good fellow!

Some information released on the new Academy F/S bidding system. Need to digest the info to understand how it's going to work and the impact will have on the Lions.
Seems to be, for example (all values hypothetical):

Rival club bids pick 3 for Heeney.

AFL table equates pick 3 value to, say, 50 points.

Sydney's first pick is 22, which equals 40 points.

Their 2nd pick is 40, which equals 20 points

Their 3rd pick is 58 which equals 10 points.

As such, if Sydney wants Heeney then they need to use their 1st and 3rd pick to get him.

The devil will be in the detail and in the weighting of picks.

I suspect it will mean that clubs will be very unlikely to take more than a couple of academy or F/S picks each year because they'll run out of picks.

It'll also be interesting to see if picks can be bundled. Eg could 3 draft picks be bundled together to "pay" for 2 players?

I don't mind it too much. I'll be interested to see how it would work if 2 or 3 academy players got bid on in the same round or say 2 got bids in the 20s, 1 in the 30s and 1 in the 40s.

Pretty much my interpretation. So Heeney will be worth Sydney's first and third pick. A discount of 10 points for academy development will bring it back to Sydney picking Heeney with their first pick.

Slightly more info here:

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/draft-shakeup-in-wings-20140807-101p7o.html#ixzz39hyyS7GB

Mentions potentially pushing picks back, rather than outright ditching them.

So Sydney in the scenario above could pay their first pick as well as have their second pick pushed back by say 10 places.

They would have to push them back because in theory you can have as many picks as you want usually list space is the cap on them bit if you had to combine picks you could just give up a whole heap of 5-12 round picks as the never get used and would still have some value
