At this stage of the rebuild, I really don't want us trading in average /depth players from other clubs.

We have enough of these already. Bottom and mid range players are already with us IMO, and will give excellent depth in the coming years.

Time to add elite talent only... Then fill any gaps as they become apparent.

I don't necessarily agree, it all depends on price, but look at it like building a wall; we're getting the bricks, but we still need mortar.

Blokes like Crisp, Kelly, even Griffiths, may not be superstars, they may not ever be, but they're young and the types that are going to be handy when the stars are hurt or we need someone to sacrifice their game to hold an opposition star.

And who knows, they may just surprise us.

I get what you're saying.

You need your A's and B's.

I reckon that apart from specific gaps, we have plenty B's. So you keep pumping potential A's in to the funnel.

Hopefully the ones that only end up B's will push out current fringe players.

These are the years when we can access elite kids and should be doing so as much as possible. You can always trade in the mortar later.

It's the old bottom six argument. the more class you bring in, the better your bottom 6 will be.

It's a bit like Sydney and Hawthorn, they went out and cherry picked guys like Richards, Gibson, Gunston etc. Those guys apart from Gibson were all just developing talent from other clubs. Getting in building block players like we did with Delaney makes sense to me. As long as you are upgrading or hole filling there is a logic to it. Teams like Sydney have a heap of solid players and a smattering of very high end talent that makes them exceptional. North on the other hand probably have too many building blocks and need some high end talent to make them exceptional. Port have drafted in a heap of very good high end players and now are looking very good.

Oh, for anyone strategising a Pelchen-led raid on GWS, here is the handy and frequently updated GWS Contract Expiry page

Cheers for that Ian. Bloody hell, if that is all correct, the following are all due to come out of contract at either the end of this season or next season!

Those in red of most interest to me:

3 Stephen Coniglio - 2015
4 Toby Greene - 2015
5 Dylan Shiel - 2015

7 Rhys Palmer - 2015
10 Devon Smith - 2015
13 Tom Boyd - 2015

14 Tomas Bugg - 2015
15 Tim Golds - 2015
16 Nathan Wilson - 2015
17 Adam Treloar - 2015
18 Jeremy Cameron - 2015
20 Adam Tomlinson - 2015

21 Matthew Buntine - 2015
24 Jono O'Rourke - 2014
26 Jonathan Giles - 2015
27 Andrew Phillips - 2015
29 Zach Williams - 2015*
31 Jacob Townsend - 2015
33 Will Hoskin-Elliott - 2015
34 Kristian Jaksch - 2014
42 Mark Whiley - 2014*
44 Tom Downie - 2015
46 Dylan Addison - 2014
48 Sam Frost - 2014

Given how clubs generally want to extend the contracts of those they really want to keep long term, I would think that would all be a pretty significant concern for GWS and they'll want to have a much better year next year if they want the great majority of that list to stick around.

That said, it is such a ridiculously strong list and they have such an advantage with the extra salary cap and COLA that even if they lost a handful of that lot they could still win a premiership or three in the not too distant future, especially since they will of course likely get a good return for any they lose.

Welcome to why GWS hasnt let out a hint of a whisper of a rumour that they are shopping any given player, because if the kids suspect GWS is not absolutely loyal to them, then it's stacks on the mill.

The only plan that might work for GWS is to do the "Band of Brothers" thing, and have all those kids go "right, lets do this together".

It's incredible how the rumours have been about Danger and Beams, not about any of the GWS kids - it might be a sign that plan is working.

And regarding the amount of talent we have, everyone including us thought the existing clubs would want to trade players to us for draft picks and whatnot, but even clubs like St Kilda that were clearly and obviously heading for a rebuild refused to let experienced players go.

To a degree yes but it was more the case that some senior St Kilda players were offered but they didn't want to move to Western Sydney

Dylan Shiel wants out & will be traded this year whilst he has currency. It's fight between us and Dees with us in box seat as it stands right now.

Our young B's could potentially become A's - Wright, White, Hickey, Ross, Webster etc...
Our old B's will never become A's ....to get more A's, it's these guys that need to be looked at for trades

Someone posted on the rumours thread on the D&T board earlier that Melbourne and GWS were working on another Dom Tyson type deal, so that is probably Shiel. They will probably be willing to offer up more for him than we will I reckon, as they are so keen to bolster their midfield.
We hold the Golden Ticket...C.P.

Just a question. Pretty much this whole thread is about poaching GWS players, are we forgetting about GC?

Think the Gold Coast is a much more attractive place to live in comparison to Western Sydney. Don't think as many Suns will want out compared to GWS but there'll be a few... It's just there's not really news on them.
