A number of different things went against us during this trade period and I think the easiest way to understand this is that we can all bitch and moan about how we were reactive in trade period and could've done more but in reality there isn't an us versus them scenario, it's eighteen different teams with eighteen different perspectives, actions, goals, player movements, attitudes, behaviours and beliefs.

Did we see Griffen coming out wanting to be traded specifically to GWS. Did we see the Bulldogs doing their due diligence and persuading Boyd to walk? Did we have a player as talented as Beams or Frawley want to walk and get us an amazing FA compo or trade pick? We didn't have ORourke and Jacksch nominate us.

There are so many different things happening and I don't think any of us can be upset with how our recruiting team performed. It sounds like we did as much as we could with ORourke and Jacksch, getting Riewoldt to call ORourke being a big part of discussion with ORourke, despite us ultimately failing to woo them. Likewise, it would have been handy for Armitage to come out of contract this year and get us Pick 2 with a big deal from a Richmond or GWS, but that wasn't the case. I would rather see the FutureFest again and not have many players to trade out, instead of the rabble that was the Bulldogs, who lost more than what they got, but because they had so many players discontent with the club and where it was heading they were much more involved than us and had the flexibility to be more active.

You need to be patient and wait for the opportunities to arise, just like we did with Geelong and Stanley. I'm happy we won, externally at least, the one trade we did make unlike others who may have got their players (dogs - Boyd, Brisbane - Beams) but paid a hefty price for them. Some trade periods you are going to win and others you won't. I think the fact Saints said they wanted to draft 4-5 players instead of the 3 we got last year meant that all along we were going to not draft a heap of players in, and it is a little disappointing that we didn't get those earlier picks, but realistically what did we have to give away that would have got us that?

I praise the club for not adding a Steven or Armitage to pick 1 to gain those earlier picks from GWS. It shows us what they rate as important and I must say I completely agree with them. It shows just how highly et rate our players, not just those who had currency, but those younger who want to forge a career with us. The fact that the only player that was traded had to agree to it is fine by me, despite how some people have castrated the club because of it.

How can we be bitter when we have picks 1, 21 and 22 when last year we had 3, 18 and 19. The difference is the players traded in last year, but like I said - it's all about opportunity!

Opportunity for our players that hold currency to be traded to get us something more valuable.
Opportunity for opposition players to want to be traded to us in the first place.
Opportunity to be at the forefront of opposition discussion, when they have other more important trades to make.
Opportunity to hold the picks that other teams are willing to trade for.
Opportunity for other clubs to have the picks you are willing to trade for.

Ultimately we didn't have the opportunities for a multiple of reasons. That's not a fail. From where we were and who we performed, it's a win. Perhaps next year we will have players with greater currency. But as I said before, I would rather have a team that has a great culture and hardly any players that want to leave than one that is a rabble with a variety of players coming and going.

Players a always wanting to leave for one reason or another (Christensen, Ryder, Beams, Griffen, Boyd) I just hope that when it is our time for these sort of trades, we try and get the best deal possible. This year just didn't provide us with the opportunity.

I don't want to be a negative Nancy here, but we can't afford to do just okay in the trade period. We needed to nail it! The state of our list compared to the rest of the comp is really quite horrifying. We are coming from a long, long way back, maintaining Armitage & Montagna was actually a major mistake for mine.

They both should have been shopped around as they will not be in our next premiership side. Armo will be 30+ next time we are any good, and if he is still in the side at that age, trust me we are not contending for a flag. Whilst his presence makes us a better side for the next 2-3 years, he will not help us win a premiership anytime soon. I think we played this trade period way to conservatively.

Pelican and the lads get to walk away claiming they met their stated objective of 3 picks inside 22, but they achieved it the easiest way possible. Not prepared to do anything bold and for mine was a really lame trade period by the Saints. There was scope to make us a better side post 2018 and we have really pulled off nothing. Keeping pick 1 does not mean we are winners. It is like going to the casino with $100 and coming home with $100 and claiming you are a winner because you didn't lose. Well, we can't afford to "break even", we needed to pull off some big trades in our favour and didn't.

We are at least 10-15 good youngsters away from matching GWS, 7-10 from the Suns & 4-7 from the Dogs. We are going to have to get really lucky with picks 21 & 22.

We are not going to catch any of these sides any time soon if our intention is to sit on our hands in trade week, and wait for people to offer us the deal of the century. We can't afford to be this conservative next year.

Cue accusations of being sook.

That is just how I see it, need to bring in a lot more new players over the next 2-3 years and we just missed a significant opportunity to be a much better side post 2018.
I think too many people get in their head that quantity is better than QUALITY!!
The club stated that pick 1 is on the table, but a very attractive offer that we couldn't refuse is what it would take..
I would take pick #1 over 4&7 every day of the week, because I feel there is a top 3, then a significant gap. If we had been offered something ludicrous like 4,6, &7 or two of those picks along with Tomlinson for 1 or 1& 22, I have no doubt we would have jumped at it, but we were not going to give away the best young kid in the country unless we were adequately compensated.. We have now got the right to take a kid who could be a franchise player for the next 12 years and some are still not happy!!
I'm glad the club stuck to its guns and like 2000 when we got Nick Riewoldt, I'm glad we didn't go with picks 4&7 and end up with Luke Livingston and Laurence Angwin, that seemed to work out ok for us

Some people seem upset we are getting the best u18 prospect into our club as well as quality kids at 21 as 22.

This is not a disaster. Losing your captain and coach in one off season is a disaster. Losing Dayne Beams for unders is a disaster. Losing Paddy Ryder for unders is a disaster.

Gaining Petracca is a game changer.

TBH, sticking with #1 i'm ok with it. what the dogs did for Boyd would never work for us... glad we didn't do it. knowing our luck he would have done an acl in training.

Petracca looks good so with him Billings Dunstan Steven Armo things not looking to bad. Daniel Caleb and Nakita Cockatoo hoping to see us pick them up as well.

So watched Draft Day.....holy shit that was a good flick.

Wish we had a similar draft to the NFL where trades can be made during the draft.

Start a rumour about Petracca get about a dozen picks exchanged, and end up with Petracca - haven't seen the movie but that's the synopsis isn't it?

I really hope we use pick 1 for him

Will be very upset if we don't take him personally, if not we should've traded for 4 and 6 or something seeing as we would want McCartin anyway (I assume would be the only possible who we overlook Petracca for) + pick 6/7. I'm confident it's Petracca we'll take though seeing how things unfolded.

To make everyone feel better, this is what a Hawks supporter posted on here a few days back.

started with - DONT TRADE YOUR NO.1 PICK - TAKE PETRACCA

'... you're going to be competing with the giants and saints in a few years time, and he's the one kid for years now that could genuinely win a finals series off his own boot. He and Dunstan will be a disgusting midfield pairing. You're sort of as close to being guaranteed a Fyfe/Dangerfield as anyone ever has been..."

Food for thought. lets hope so.

So it's Petracca v McCartin as the two choices for the number one pick!!

Personally I hope it is Petracca....
there is no choice Smoke...you take the most dominant 2-year TAC Cup player in history.

If there was any type of deal on the table that included pick 4 then I reckon we would've taken that and backed ourselves in to get McCartin. If that's who we really wanted.

Now we've kept pick 1 I reckon it's gotta be CP.

Just gotta be
