I've only seen bits of Whitfield, but I'd prefer Minchington and Sinclair to Whitfield. Same skill level, but our 2 can win ball on the inside as well as damage on the outside.

Don't really get the Whitfield love.
Whitfield had 28 touches last night (3 less than Sinclair and Minch combined), 11 contested so he's can win the inside ball if he has to. Whitfield will be a gun and all 3 would look good in the same side IMO.

I can understand how you would think there wasn't much between the 3 after yesterday, but Whitfield performs week in week out and has elite endurance. It's taken Minchi several seasons to build up a decent tank and if he has now found that endurance then yes he will be a good player for us I believe. But Whitfield is extremely reliable, keeps running and is a complete package, no deficiencies and almost never has a quiet game/goes missing. Whitfield got 28 touches, 11 contested (which shows he has identified and improved his contested game significantly) and had 5 registered tackles. The kid still has some developing to do at 21 but he would be in our top 3 or so young players if he came to our club.

Think we are at the point in time where giving up our first draft pick is still too much sacrifice for a good player. If we were higher up and our first rounder was 10+ I feel we may consider it more, however at the moment I can only see deals such as Carlisle's (getting a late first rounder in return) happening

I never get these comments. Obviously the player has to be a good player but what is the difference between getting a 10 year player from another club or a potential 10 year player from the draft. I see getting the proven player as a safer and more obvious option. I agree I wouldn't do it on a player who cant play at least 100 to 150 games.

i wonder what happens to corey ellis. has enough traits to make me like him. gets labelled soft and slow but just seems like a JB lite.

would love us to take on some potentially busty 1st round picks if we get the chance

Difference is P66 that the player from another club has two or more preseason and maybe 50 plus games at the top level.

So in essence I agree with you

I'd be looking at giving up next years first rounder for him and keeping next years. Agree we need our first round picks but if the option is there and we believe that Whitfield is better than anyone we'll get at lets say pick 8 in next years draft then we've got to do it. Who knows who is going to be available at that stage? All the best quality outside mids might be gone by then and we might be left with the decision to take the best available which may well be a KPP or do we take the best outside mid, who may actually be rated the 12th best player in the draft. With Whitfield we'd know exactly what we are getting and that's exactly what we are looking for.

Don't believe we can give up next years firat rounder since we traded our 2nd rounder for Freezer.

We have liked Josh Kelly GWS when does he come out of contract? He is exactly the type of player we need to compliment our inside mids and would rather him that Whitfield.
Would love Josh Kelly but who says he's ever going to leave? We'd be mad not to chase Whitfield and hold onto hope that Kelly or Shiel will 1. Decide to leave GWS and 2. Decide to come to the Saints.

Need to strike while the iron is hot. It's like people suggesting we shouldn't have got Carlisle because there may be a chance that Hurley walks out on Essendon this year.

On another good note, was good to see freeman get through the 3 quarters yesterday an also having 46 disposals

I still believe we are short in quality midfielders. I wouldn't mind against going after some more damaging half forwards line Billings. Imagine having 3 or 4 of them spending their time in forward line then spurts in the midfield! Yesterday sort have showed it can work, with Armitage and Steven rotating from midfield to forward line. Looked so damaging.

Do we think we will carry all 4 of our rucks still into next season, or look to trade or swap one for an upgrade of pick/package them up to address an area of need in elite mid?

Additionally the elite kicking of billings savage and Webster set us up really well. So a few more elite kicks and pace and our team will be exciting

Hickey and Longer will work together when Riewoldt retires that gives Longer few years to improve his around the ground work. Ruck is a hard job with injuries having two strong rucks and some depth is a huge advantage WC was not interested in losing its ruck stocks.

What clubs have 2 strong ruckmen especially when neither has really any idea forward, well certainly Longer doesn't?

Ok lets trade him then watch Hickey go down for the season with a knee injury can we not do this every week its possible for players to improve Hickey is playing extremely well but has a history of injury

Did I say that? No but yes if we got a very good pick for Longer I would trade him. Anyway if only one plays week in week out one will want out anyway. As for improving well yes players can and both will but neither will improve enough to make a KPF.
