The trick is to do a 'Luke Ball'.

Say you want to offer Fyfe 6.5M over 5 years.

You offer him 6M over 3 years and then wink wink, nudge nudge, he signs an extension for 250k a season for next two years... At least that's the theory.

Freo would be mad to match an official 6M/3yr offer for a player that doesn't want to be there...

Does the distribution of the salary even affect their ability to match the offer sheet? I know it seems logical, but all they have to do is stump up the same amount over the same period, front-loading might not cut it.

If you were Freo would you match the kind of offer Ferrisb has outlined above for a player who has said he doesn't want to be at your club ?
They'll get a 1st round compo pick , better than what Hawthorn received for Franklin .
Sometimes it's better to just move on .
The difference in the Dangerfield case i imagine was , Geelong didn't have the capacity salary cap wise to make a large enough offer up front to force Adelaide to pass on matching.

Your logic makes sense but I would steer well clear of anything even faintly dodgy.

Have we gone from "ï wonder if fyffe is one of the marquee players we will be chasing end of 2017" to " Fyffe says he wants out and is coming to the blues" without him saying anything? Talk about Chinese whispers (not meant to be racist in any way- in any case a chinese mate of mine doesnt find it offensive so please dont call me a racist cos I really wasnt trying to be)

2017 season hasnt even started yet and people are into the next trade period already.........sheesh.

Unfortunately, its a change in a Carlton supporters mentality of late.
I tend to still believe and even try to keep positive that we can play finals in 2017.
I will keep an eye on trades, be silly not too, but main focus is paying finals in 2017!

Just off season list management discussion in the list management thread and until Fyfe re signs with Freo , i guess the discussion will continue ...

I get that. But has fyffe actually said that he doesnt want to be at the club (freo)? - which is what you actually wrote

it's because its the third year of a 3 year rebuild the club has put in place that will finally take us back to the top. It's exciting and not before time.

Nothing but a positive

Nothing wrong with looking at potential future trades. Gives us something to talk about rather than who will be cut next year and the players ready to take the rising star award! :p

the marquee player were are going after particularly if its a midfielder must be one that impacts the game and provides damage.

Next case, the Crown versus the Carlton Football Club. The charge - false advertising. I call Michael Malthouse to the stand.
Objection. Asked and answered.

Malthouse is a co-accused, charged with:

Attempted murder - Exhibit A is our list management 2013-2015
Theft - stealing three years' worth of pay.
Fraud - Liam Jones' contract
Arson - after setting fire to fans' hope

Is should be noted that the defense will be arguing mitigating circumstances and reduced damages as the subsequent appointment of Bolton as coach has minimised pain and suffering.
