At least two Victorian clubs are keeping "close tabs" on Sydney youngster Zak Jones, says Mitch Cleary.

The young Swan is out-of-contract at the end of the season and could attract plenty of interest, given his strong start to the year.

"North Melbourne and St Kilda are the two clubs that I've heard are keeping very close tabs on Zak Jones," Cleary said on Sportsday.

"He was of their best in last year's grand final and is averaging 21 touches this year."

I for one would love Zak Jones. Aggressive, competitor, speed, ball use of half back, one you want in the trenches when it gets real tuff. Nathan has been a star in a very ordinary side over a period of time and I think Zak will end up having better career so make ofvthat what you will.

Make it happen !!

Do we need another Half back flanker type who's terrible by foot?

Honestly, I could see him taking over Sav's position as he's got good pace, but he'd need to work on his kicking

If we could turn him into a midfielder like his brother, I'd be keen, but again his ceiling would be pretty low

Terrible by foot ? A little harsh I think. Agree in taking Sav's position and also turning him into a mid would be a bonus. Spot on there Rors.

My mates & I play drinking games when we watch Swans games.... Pick a player out of Kennedy, Jones, Hanners & Aliir - every time a kick misses a target or is a critical turnover, you drink...

Most times we're all smashed halfway through the 1st quarter

Our issue in the middle is we don't have minimum 3 elite mids when it's crunch time.
Against the cats we really only have Steven with the capability to 'lift' in that last quarter at the centre clearances. Cats had Selwood, Dangerfield
Watching freo against north in the last quarter when they lifted it was Fyfe, Mundy, Neale.
Bombers have Watson, Merrett, Heppel.
Pies have Treloar, Pendlebury, Adams, Sidebottom
Tigers have Cotchin, Martin, Prestia
Swans have Kennedy, Parker, Hanneberry
Evelyn the Lions have Zorko, beams, rockliff
You get the idea.

Unless we can see some of out other mids entering the elite category in 1-2 seasons it really emphasises the need to attract 2 of Kelly, Fyfe, Martin, Rockliff etc..
We have the draft picks, we have the salary cap space. We need to land some elite mids to take us into the top 4.

Yes , contested ball winners. Steven and Armitage are OK at it.
Ross is getting better but still miles away.

GWS have Ward, Shiel, Kelly, Greene, Smith, Scully, Johnson.....

And then have waiting in the wings: Hopper, Kennedy, Taranto, Setterfield, Perryman

Injured: Coniglio Deledio Griffen

Life is NOT fair :(

Can he play midfield

Found Jonathon Brown's opinion interesting on On The Couch last night regarding Collingwood's rebuild. He was surprised and bemused that the Pies didn't start their rebuild with their spine as thats 'what all the good teams do'.

Does show that you can have Champion Data's number one ranked midfield but if you lack real quality at both ends of the ground, more often than not you're going to struggle.

Keeps my faith strong that we have attacked this rebuild absolutely the correct way. Starting strong at both ends with young KPP's whilst developing a really strong, workman like midfield learning the game in a way that will hold strong in finals football. And we are in a position now we're almost certain to add at least 3 more elite midfield talents this off season.

Good post. It's all going to plan pretty well as far as I'm concerned. Just need to nail the next couple of draft and FA periods and we'll be right up there.

I'm not sure I can wait for 6 months of will he or won't he sign, (insert Fyfe, Martin, Kelly or Hopper here).

I would say if someone hasnt signed by July then they're going, (always exceptions but generally they're gone)
My gut says that we won't know until they make an announcement.

Then again, my gut is full of scotch and coke.

Correct.

Jones is a goer but is not what we need. He really isn't.

We need elite midfielders. 3-4 of them.

You do realise Melbourne gave up 2 top 6 draft picks to get the rights to grab Hogan in the mini draft yeah?
Not quite, mate. Dees gave up draft picks No. 3 and 14 (Scully compensation selection) for Hogan, Barry and pick 20. A reasonable trade.

But the Scully deal netted them both a first-round and a mid-first round draft pick as compensation.

Outrageous!

Possibly find that Swans fans do the same when watching us every time we miss a goal ;)

Billings isn't a midfielder for starters so not sure why you compare him to Oliver & Petracca is all hype. Billings shits on Petracca.

Like I said, you play that round 1 game 10x over & you'd get a different result every time. I just don't see why you think they have gone past us. Yes they have a better midfield, but that's where it ends. Our forward & defence lines shit on theirs
The reason we picked billings was because we saw him becoming a midfielder after 3 years. It's even in there draft meetings they held. They thought he had the potential to play midfield and he hasn't proven the scope yet. Petracca takes a s*** on billings
