Pluggs you cant be serious ... the days of the turn a blind eye on off field behaviour provided the on field stuff is top shelf has well and truely past.. and even when it was still acceptable that mentality has never been allowed at our club without damning critisism and negative results for the club...
you are right a player needs to be a good player first most but the AFL landscape is much more complex a drug scandal for a club like ours can be devistating, our sponsors we have to work so hard to get would run off in droves our profile in the media would be destroyed we dont have the luxury to be able to just wait out a scandal when we get caught up in one it bloody well sticks for a long long time.. so yeah it is important we do our due dilligance on a players background ...

as for our club being hollier , its not a case of that at all we are no differant to the majority of clubs in the AFL the thing is its more important for us as a club to keep our name clean due to the fact that it is significantly harder for the mud to be cleaned of us then other clubs
But we are Saints

It is off-the-charts naive to think that WB would be as keen to offload Stringer as they supposedly are if the "only thing he's done wrong is break up with his missus"! :D

I mean naivety doesn't get any more extreme than that.

He's just 23yo, has made an AA team at 21yo, has won their goalkicking the last 3 years (including in a premiership year) and is a massive fan favourite, so if they are trying to push him out in spite of all that, there have to be serious, serious issues there.

It is buyer beware in a big way and due diligence would absolutely be needed, and I expect, done.

well said

imagine tomorrow, we pick up the paper and there's news that we are willing to trade jack billings. now imagine he made the AA team.

we are not talking about a trade because we think the trade currency is good or because we think he's a downward trend from here. there's no suitors. it's basically "hey other clubs we want to trade this guy". if we were doing that we'd all be questioning WTF is going on. why is he suddenly on the outer.

thats a trade that stinks of something else happening

remember the last time we thought we had a bargain when another club threw up one of their stars for trade

the character references were endless "he's turned his life around, he's turned the corner, just needs a fresh start"

nek minut, he's coming 2nd last in the time trial to a bean pole rookie ruck. the next second he's locked up for drunk and disorderly. the next hour, he's on rape charges. never plays a game.

buyer beware

Stringer passes the smell test for me. I kinda feel like the club itself may be a little on the nose and any stink around Jake may be accentuated cause he is currently standing in that mire. When you look at de-listings and forced trades through the last two to three years some you could see some coming a mile away. Both Yarrans, for example, were clearly on the nose. As were Mitch Clarke, Heritier Lumumba, Reece McKenzie, Colin Sylvia, Harley Bennell all for different reasons, and all of whom we would have shut the door on if they had of enquired with us. Stringer for me falls into the Charlie Dixon category. Good player, plenty of arrogance, history of misdemeanors, comes off like a flog, and might be hard to coach. But hey...Richardson is well paid. He can work around that.

Stringer also doesn't strike me as an alpha male, unlike Carlisle who definitely gives off that vibe. So I don't think he would damage the group if he does have some unattractive idiosyncrasies. Rather he might find it hard to penetrate the inner circle at the Saints and be absorbed into the existing core.

But surely, regardless of which side of the fence we stand, we have to throw our hat in to the ring for anyone as well credentialed as Stringer. If something turns up between now and trade date then we have every right to withdraw any offer we put on the table. And our first offer should be low, as it would be in any negotiation surrounded by uncertainty.

So if I was in charge I would be instructing the recruiting department to dig around and put together a dossier on the package. In fact I probably would have issued that instruction the day he was dropped to the VFL.

Get well soon plugger I hope this is providing you with some entertainment.

When all is said and sifted we all just want the saints to succeed.

Plugger did it start with the flu?.

Yep. Thought it was a cold because I felt ok so kept mowing lawns and drinking. Woke up Sunday night around 3am and couldn't breath and couldn't stop shaking. Its just a pain because I cant mow for at least a week and it gets busier now and I feel like I could work. Its so boring sitting at home. Foxtel has over 100 stations and they are all crap.

except WCE will get thumped by GWS ...
beating a wayward kicking Port (who were average at best during the year) after the siren due to a dubious free kick doesnt hid the fact WCE are a loooooong way off GWS even when crippled by injury - hence the WCE partying like they won the flag last week.. they will be cannon fodder this week
No cheese toasties for me then.

:(

I wouldn't worry too much about WB wanting to offload Stringer. A misbehaving player surrounded by impressionable individuals is much more disastrous than a misbehaving player surrounded by individuals that don't care. It could be that Stringer and a few others feed off each other in a self-destructive cycle; with no similar player at St Kilda, this may be a non-issue (or close to it).

Third in the AFLPA MVP....why wouldn't you announce such a great re-signing?
Maybe you were keeping it as a fall back in case you actually failed to win a Premiership after starting the year as the overwhelming favourite? It's also possible that Kelly has signed with GWS and that has allowed them to quickly tie up other contracts. Only they're getting announced first.

I am in the get Stringer camp, but I am pretty cautious also. I think comparisons to blokes like Carlise and Martin are incorrect. By all reports blokes love playing with Martin and Carlisle. They have some loose tendencies off-field but are otherwise great teammates and fun to be around. They are universally liked within the 4 walls of the club. This is the exact opposite of Stringer. A Dogs poster wrote an interesting post regarding Stringer on this issue. Essentially Stringer has had troubles with every coach right back to his teenage years. The source......

His parents...

Stringer has an extreme case of FIGJAM. I mate of mine worked at the Dogs for a long time. Lovely bloke, never a bad word to say about anyone. Reckons the Dogs are a fantastic bunch of guys with the exception of 3 people. Lake, Cooney & Stringer. He didn't go into great detail, but indicated the ego on both Stringer and Cooney was next level. Couple that with a very thin skin and he is a difficult player to work with.

Despite all that, I actually agree with Plugger for the first time ever. We need to take some MASSIVE risks or we are staring down the barrel of mid table mediocrity for some time IMO. Our game plan and existing list is far too blue collar.

Take a risk Saints, throw some money at the Package and we promise Carlisle won't heckle you about JJ shagging your missus.

Have you only been right once then?

I'm not so sure on this.

No Mumford
No Cameron

GWS will play 2 blokes that are cooked - Deledio & Steve J

West Coast can win

If only clubs didn't think like that about 3 years ago when Martin was willing to leave Richmond and they seemed happy for him to go.

I actually think the side is much more balanced this week. Last week again showed that to many talls out of form makes your side so much weaker. GWS best game for the year was against the Dees. Have a look who was out that week.

Was found with a pocket full of disco biscuits, not heroin.

Sorry that's right. The story was that he was on heroin but found with ecstasy if the rumours are true.

Rocky FA to us with contract structured to give Brisbane Compo Pick 2. Trade 7 & 8 to Bris for 2 & 19.

2, Hickey & Next Years' second to GWS for Kelly. This is a weird one. Could go 2, Hickey and next years' first, but would then want GWS' first next year back.

19 for Stringer in a straight swap. I'm not than keen on him, think he's a flog, but at the moment the phrase 'blue collar' is pretty accurate to describe our game style. Kelly and Stringer would turn this on its' head hopefully.

Armo to stay. At worst, great, depth, and we need some good clubmen around to fill the void of Roo and Joey.

I wouldn't put a line through Whitfield even with the news today. Is going to be a very interesting offseason.

Mumford had 46 HOs, 1 goal, 11 disposals & 11 tackles v Gawn in that game against Melbourne.

As I said, no Mumford is massive.

McGovern Barrass EMac to cover talls - Patton, Berg, Lobb

Bradd Shepperd to make Lids invisible.
Hurn on Johnson

Just have to convince Stringer that three Dares and a handful of no doze are just as good as the shit he gets behind footscray market. We could get him to market it that way.
