The Sloane chat makes me nervous.

Guy is a gun and one first rounder = yes but any more and I would be saying no based on his age profile.

If we could somehow get Gaff and Sloane in this trade period though and still have our first rounder next year, I'd be happy.

That is completely unrealistic. Then people complain we either paid to much or why didn't we trade.

giving up dunstan would be madness ... i dont think thats on the cards we have put the time and effort into developing him (yes its been up and down) we wouldnt trade him out now he is getting some traction

Well we have to many slow inside mids so the choices are simple. Keep all of them and play one in the reserves, delist one which wont happen, trade one so then do you trade a no value player or the best value player. Depending on who we got I think Dunstan is very tradable.

Since 2003, we've barely had a top eight draft pick since.

2003 Pick 8 Raph Clarke
2004
2005
2006 (Armitage was pick 9)
2007 (McEvoy was pick 9)
2008
2009
2010
2011
2012
2013 Pick 3 Jack Billings
2014 Pick 1 Paddy McCartin
2015
2016
2017 Pick 7, Pick 8

That's twice in thirteen years we have gone to the draft with a top eight pick. The other rare times we have had a top eight pick we have traded it out prior to the draft. Even our 2007 pick 9 (McEvoy) we traded out after five or so years. After Armitage, our next highest pick was McQualter in 2004 with pick 17.

This year we have two top eight picks. Unless there is an offer too good to refuse, I hope we go to the draft because we may not get another top eight pick for many years to come, and the top end is where we are most likely to draft a future star..
Probably helps to explain why we haven't played finals for 6 years now.

Sure top 7 or 8 picks aren't essential to building a really good list, as teams like Sydney and Adelaide have shown us, but they certainly do help, as it's much more likely that you'll get someone really good with those picks than with picks in the 20's and so-on.

Since those heady days of champagne corks popping when we got the 'steal of the draft' with pick 8 in 2003, we've barely had a top eight draft pick since.

What does Adelaide's look like?

I'll show you.

2004 - John Meesen Pick 8

Sometimes draft position is overvalued.

Maybe, but Sloan is more similar to Dunstan than the quick outside elite runner we need.

Sloane for 7 and next years first, with a 2nd or early 3rd coming back.

Saad + Hall for pick 8.

Hickey/compo + for Dev Smith.

HB: Newnes Carlisle Saad
C: Hall Sloane Sinclair
R: Longer Ross Steven
HF: Billings Membrey Smith
FF: Gresham

Try pick up a small forward or two for next to nothing that can stay in the contest, so if the two KPF becomes outdated, we don't stubbornly toil away all season....

Please not Sloane
why ? i rate him much much much higher than Gaff...
second youngest list in the comp and we just lost pretty much every player with over 150 games experiance from our list .. Sloane would be a massive improvment to our team would be a big marketing boom for us and bring in a massive chunk of leadership into our group... heck as it stands right now Gilbo is the only bloke with finals experiance on our list

He isn't an outside runner but he is a genuine star. I doubt we have any hope of getting him just because of the players Adelaide may lose this year but if you get a chance to get a star you get him. Also it means Steven wont be tagged as much and that releases him to play much more outside. And he is fast just not an elite runner unfortunately.

Is there anything that smells about the sheer profusion of sweetheart deals between Carlton and GWS?

Jaksch, Whiley, Lamb, Pickett, Sumner, Plowman, Marchbank, Palmer, Phillips and now Kennedy... sure they’re not all winners, but no one else seems to be able to deal with them that easily.

With Luke Hodge going to Brisbane we are the youngest in the comp.

I am all for getting Sloane if it doesn't involve an early pick and/or young player. So ideally we get him next year as a FA.

I think it's too much to give up on our end for someone who's probably going to have a couple of good years before he tails off. Most mids don't make it to their mid thirties and still have a big impact.

My apologies mate. Funny how some supporters take any sort of criticism towards the club so personally.
Funny that the club itself identified areas of improvement needed from coaching panel after this season and are going towards rectifying it.
I'll make sure I only mention positives from now on.
Any whispers on who might be joining the coaching panel with Playfair? Someone said were talking to a big name coach a little while back i think.

Really. I'm unsure of that. This waiting until next sounds like groundhog day from last year. If you can play 100 good games then you have helped the club. If we aren't in the top 4 in 5 years we maybe on another rebuild anyway.

Dunstan, Gresham and Steele will be A Grade mids in 2 years. Bookmark it.

Sloane is one of my all time favourites. But at his age I wouldn't want to pay more than 1 first rounder. Also, while he isn't slow, but he definitely isn't quick.
