This draft has depth I would like us to use 5 picks not 4 were going in with 38 instead of 40 on our list.

Pretty much all the draft 'gurus' say that the depth is normal. But the top end is extraordinary (we're not there) and the number of quality good sized contested mids is also very high.

So late picks are much the same as always. But there will be the usual good players around til say pick 50-60ish. Hopefully we get the right players to take our team on for another decade post the Cotch/Dusty era.

It's not a phantom draft at all. He doesn't place the bids on father-sons and academy picks or take away the picks teams will need to use to get them, i e. he has North getting Thomas and Scott but he still gives them all the picks in the 40s and 50s they'll have to give up.

He might get paid, but the bloke's an amateur.

I’d be interested to see your amateur power ranking/phantom draft. Got it handy?

Interesting piece in the H/S in regards to the Suns offering up pick 2 & 6 for pick 1.(can't see Carlton doing it)
A table of pick 1's vs pick 2's & 6's since 2000.

If you believe the rumours, Gold Coast is attempting to add another top five draft pick to its arsenal.

The Suns are eyeing off Carlton’s No.1 pick or St Kilda’s pick No.4 in what would be the biggest draft pick trade since Hawthorn secured Fremantle’s No.1 in 2001.

To secure the Blues’ top pick - and you would assume Sam Walsh - the Suns would have to give up picks No.2 and 6.

CHAMPION DATA: RANKINE NAMED TOP PROSPECT

CONTRACT TALKS: BIGGEST 13 SIGNATURES OF 2019

ROSS THE BOSS: INSIDE LOOK AT SAINTS RECRUITING

While pick No.6 would also be involved in any trade with the Saints.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and looking back at past drafts, the Blues could be tempted to secure two young guns but history tells us potential is also fraught with danger.

Taking last year’s draft as an example, would you be happy to give up Cam Rayner, knowing you’d secure Andrew Brayshaw and Jaidyn Stephenson?

South Australian prospect Izak Rankine.
Carlton fans might be disappointed to miss out on Walsh but the addition of Izak Rankine and Bailey Smith, or perhaps Ben or Max King, would certainly ease the pain.

Gold Coast’s pursuit of St Kilda’s No.4 draft pick looks a little harder to accomplish.

However, the pay-off for the Suns would be immense given they would then own picks No.2, 3 and 4.

Pick No.1 v 2 & 6
2017 Cam Rayner Andrew Brayshaw & Jaidyn Stephenson
2016 Andrew McGrath Tim Taranto & Sam Petrevski-Seton
2015 Jacob Weitering Josh Schache & Aaron Francis
2014 Paddy McCartin Christian Petracca & Caleb Marchbank
2013 Tom Boyd Josh Kelly & Matthew Scharenberg
2012 Lachie Whitfield Jono O'Rourke & Jack Macrae
2011 Jon Patton Stephen Coniglio & Chad Wingard
2010 David Swallow Harley Bennell & Reece Conca
2009 Tom Scully Jack Trengove & Gary Rohan
2008 Jack Watts Nic Naitanui & Chris Yarran
2007 Matthew Kreuzer Trent Cotchin & David Myers
2006 Bryce Gibbs Scott Gumbleton & Mitch Thorp
2005 Marc Murphy Dale Thomas & Beau Dowler
2004 Brett Deledio Jarryd Roughead & Tom Williams
2003 Adam Cooney Andrew Walker & Kepler Bradley
2002 Brendon Goddard Daniel Wells & Steven Salopek
2001 Luke Hodge Luke Ball & Ashley Sampi
2000 Nick Riewoldt Justin Koschitzke & Dylan Smith

Only year it paid off would be 2011 with Coniglio & Wingard.(excluding 2017.To early to tell).

Just goes to show top 10 picks despite how high they are is just as a lottery as later picks.
Pick number 6 is the most cursed pick in draft history no wonder the suns want to get rid of it

If they give up 2 & 6 for pick one they might as well hand back the keys. I think it will be 2&6 for 1 and 2019 Carlton 1st if anything.

Can’t see why they’d want Sam Walsh though, maybe Carlton will make the trade knowing GCS want Lukosius or King.
It would need to be 3 & 6 for Pick 1 & 2019 1st
Pick 1 this year isn't much better than 3 or 6

If i was the suns the only clubs I'd deal with is both SA clubs for pick 2.
However wonder what both clubs would give up for pick 1.

As per the first post, load up with mids please.

Project 3 years ahead and those heading towards the hills (not to say they won’t be playing, but you need mature coverage ready to go as the drop off can be quick).

Age right now (oldest to younger) : Grigg 30, Houli 30, Edwards 30, Reiwoldt 30, Rance 29, Cotchin 28, Astbury 27, Martin 27 , Grimes 27, Caddy 26, Lambert 26, Prestia 26, Lynch 26.

We addressed the talls in last years draft with Balta, CJ and Miller. We’ve got Garth ready to go as well.

Higgins added another mid, Naish an outside type. Baker a potential mid.

Throw in a couple of more new mids into the mix.

I agree and think that's why Lloyd, Conca, Miles, cellis etc were moved along for peanuts. Set the club up off a good base for the next ten years.

Dont think its about saving cash as much as holding a pick for the mid season draft and having enough spots for 2019 draft
Imo if it was for that, we would have some players going next year ie Grigg, Houli etc. I still think we are saving cash in the TPP. I agree it could be a 39 player thing with the mid season draft left open.

How the farg does a 359 AFL gamers son qualify for a swans academy, when he played for Fitzroy and North, young blakey was always going to play afl, swans have planed this years before, the guys a top 10 pick, with Sydneys first pick being 26,academy system is changing draft way more with dead set certaintys to play AFL going through the clubs academys.

Well the Swans had pick 14 originally, they just traded it to accumulate more points - so saying pick 26 is their first pick is a little misleading.

Whilst I agree that Blakely was always going to play AFL, I think it's more of an indictment on North Melbourne (and Brisbane but they've shown they're on the right path imo) that he chose Sydney over them despite his family ties.

Given we are expected to be thereabouts again next yr there is no way they give us 11 for what is expected to be a late 1st next yr.
Your right in regards where we are expected to finish next year.
Funny game footy though.
Who would have thought after 2015 we'd finish where we did in 2016 which cost us a higher pick than what was expected for Prestia.
End of the day i doubt very much GWS would do it.Just stating that they are the only club with the 3 picks range that could do it.

Tom Aitkins from Geelong as a inside mid anyone?...
I don't know alot about him but his specs are pretty good and just coming into his prime....

Good, it's not just me that's picked up on this, nothing compromises the Draft more than this rorting system.
