Call me a supreme optimist - I probably am. But let me throw some numbers at you: if Smith scores 304 at The Oval, he'll break Bradman's record of 974 runs. Or if he matches Michael Clarke's top score of 329, he'll become the first person to score 1000 runs in a series: in just 4 Tests!!!

It's a tough ask, but if anyone can, it's Smithy!!!

I don't think it matters too much. India, England and Australia already have the rub of the green when it comes to Cricket so I really have no sympathy for them having to slog it out for a month when the likes of Bangladesh are refused tours for financial reasons.

Looking at them side by side it looks unfair but the other teams will get their chance with a short tour against a weak opponent later on.

It's not perfect by any means but if it brings some more context it's worth letting it run its course and then reassessing.

It's just another form of rankings and who cares about those.

Poms were wasting time and bowled 6 overs in 40 minutes last night. Someone said they don't fine / suspend captains for over rates anymore they just dock points from that.

Hmm survival in the ashes v losing test championship points let me think about that before I waste some time......

3.4 tests!
Didn't bat in the second innings after being knocked out and no doubt that concussion effected his first innings aswell.
Bloke is a freak, soak it in lads, we are seeing history.

England great Steve Harmison:

Hahahahahahahshahah

Delicious.

Let the tears flow Harmy, however when they dry you’ll still be able to read SPD Smith at the top of every batting list for the rest of your life ahahahahahaha

Great choice of words though: “I’m not going to sugar-coat it".

Well of course he won't. It's not the ball in an Ashes series, and he doesn't have his magic lollies with him.

We'll get to see their entire 'go slow catalogue' tonight.
It's just England showing off their clever sportsmanship

When Australia does it is bad though of course.

This is why I couldn't get these do-gooders during sandpaper gate who wanted huge bans so we could get in the good graces with the rest of the Cricket world. Most of the other teams are really no better most of the time. But we are guilted into thinking we're the ultimate bad guys. Are England really any better?

Just look at Harmison. No irony whatsoever. They really think they can do no wrong.

I don't think that's optimism.
Smith got 286 in the First, 293 in this one, and would have got that 304 if not chasing quick runs in his weird way. It's not a fait accompli, "but if anyone can, it's Smithy". :)

The same Harmison that was a part of the 05 Ashes side that we now know tampered the ball.

Glass houses, Harmy.

Smith: ungainly, yet weirdly amusing eg
--- an Archer bouncer made him lean so far backwards that he fell flat on his back; ungainly.
--- while on his back, he wafted his bat in the air, ghost-playing the shot he should have played*.
Grinning like a kid. :D :D
(*anyone got a gif of that, please?)

Saw it. Love him more.

And Steve Harmisson will always be remembered as the guy who bowled the first ball of an ashes series straight to 2nd slip lmao

They deserve this though. Last game Root still looked determined but in this game after Tea Root looked like he’d given up and they were just wasting time. Hard to show any fight when that’s your mindset.
Always been the English way when it comes to cricket, always play to not lose rather than try to win

You know that strange, cocky-hop ball-leave where Smith waves his, um,
uh,
bat-sabre at the wicket then quickly jump-turns his back to the bowler?
BF has an emoji for that; it's obviously ---> :straining:

'It's illegal, isn't it?'
...... Damien Fleming, the former Australia swing bowler, is of the opinion that Trescothick's strategy was against the laws of the game. "It is some form of ball tampering, it is not about natural deterioration," he said. "It is illegal, isn't it?"
Fleming told Cricinfo that though he was happy to be a bit more naive and thought it was good bowling, he always felt something was amiss to see the ball reverse-swing in England. "I loved the wrist release of Flintoff, Jones and Harmison, but always felt something was going on as the ball was reversing by the 40th over, especially on a grassy pitches," Fleming said. "You're used to seeing the ball reverse early on the much rougher tracks in the subcontinent where the hard surface makes the ball abrasive easily."
Angus Fraser, the former England medium pace bowler who covered the series for the Independent, wouldn't go as far as to deem the practice illegal, but he believed the disclosure has exposed the hypocrisy that has existed over ball tampering.

Author of this article:
gets 10/10 for this:
"From a deficit of 196 on the first innings, England briefly had hope after four quick wickets.
Smith snuffed it out in darkly comic fashion, with declaration batting like delirium tremens conveyed through interpretive dance. "
