So if I'm doing the sums correctly:

If we bid on Green at 5, that is worth 1878 pts. With the discount, GWS owe 1502 pts.

After using pick 4, they have picks 40, 59, 60, 80, 94.
Combined total worth 733 (I think, as picks 74+ have no value).

So GWS would go into deficit 769 points for 2020.

So in 2020 they have just traded out their pick 1. If they finish 2nd again (to us obviously) their 2nd rounder would be 35 (522 pts) which would be used up, plus their 3rd rounder 53 (233 pts) would also go.
They traded in North's future 3rd (for Bonar), but traded out their future 4th (part of Bonar trade) and the one they got for Patton (for Jacobs).

So to cut a long story short, to match a bid at 5 for Green, they will use all remaining picks this year, plus next year's 2nd and 3rd, leaving them with just Norths 2020 3rd, and their 5th+ rounders.

On draft night Club A locks in who they're taking then there's a period to work out a deal with Club A for that pick/player.

...at least I think so

That’s NBA. Don’t think that’s available (pretty sure on this) in the AFL yet.

If you knew GWS wouldn’t match a bid at 3 (because they want Jackson at 4) would you entertain a swap of 3 and 5? Wondering how much the Swans would load to pick 5 to get Green instead of say Young.

Really hope not put it that way. Would cost too much and our future first is way too valuable with us in a rebuild

Current.
Melb - p3,8
Swans - p5,25,32,44
A pick swap makes sense for both clubs. p3 for p5 + (25 or 32)
both clubs want a top end talent - both clubs could achieve that
Melbourne wants more draft picks - Melbourne would achieve that

As it stands at the moment, the Swans end up with p6 after GWS match a bid for Green. Im sure they'd be wanting to trade up to three and happy to give up a 2nd rounder to do so.. Swans move from 6 to 3
If Swans and Melb swapped picks, Melb would loose the opportunity to bid on Green (whom they probably dont want due to their current inside mids) but knowing the Swans would bid on Green (therefore resulting in pick 3 or 4 being used on him), only miss the opportunity on the player that the Swans or Giants pick aside from Green, and therefore only really drop down the order 1 spot.

How the draft looks if swans and melb swap.
p1, p2 - Rowell & Anderson
p3, p4 - Green & ???? (swans will bid on Green - meaning p3 or 4 will be used on Green)
p5 - melbourne - could select Young or Jackson

it won't cost too much

Doesn't their 2020 first slide back to second round (I'm assuming they win) if they are in points deficit this year, making the benefit Adelaide gets for trading pick 4 = to 3/4 of SFA? Here Adelaide, have pick 25 next year, what a bonus !

Added bonus - at least 10 academy/father son picks to come in prior to 25 also - so it'll end up being pick 30 something. :poo:

nup.. GWS dont have a 1st round anymore, its Adelaides
Yes my point exactly - but surely the pick still slides if they are in deficit otherwise it's a total rort. It will be based on where GWS finish next year, that should include any deficit of points.

Nope, any deficit that GWS incurs will be taken from GWS's first pick next year, which is currently their second round pick.

or any 1st round (or higher) picks they get from trading a player out in 2020 trade period
Yes, I changed the wording slightly on my post above from "now" to "currently", to make that clear. If they trade in a higher pick than their second rounder then it would be one the one that gets the deficit applied to it.

Considering the lower points value of a second round pick, if they do need to go into deficit and they don't trade in another higher pick them they are going in to next year's draft without a selection until the third round as a result of this decision.

No doubt GWS will be trying to bring in some more later picks.
GWS haven’t been out of the 8 in the last 4 seasons and will have had 10 1st round picks by the end “19 draft....fo...give them the cup now...

that’s More than anysupposed advantage the swans ever had, but hey, I don’t hear the moaning and whinging from VIC clubs...not in public anyway...

So the draft is pretty much locked in as so?
1. Rowell
2. Anderson
3. Young
4. Jackson
5. Green

So we'll pick Serong?
I don't think it is locked in that Melbourne won't bid on Green. They also might be interested in Jackson themselves. We also don't know if there are any more trades in the upper order. So... Yeah, nothing much appears to be locked in.

before this year.. GWS have had 28 1st round selections!!

Least they didn’t blow them like Gold Coast who have stuffed the competition again for the next period.

Im sooooo keen for Melb and the swans to swap picks.
To get to p4, GWS have invested p12,18 & future 1st. Thats the points equivalent of well over pick 1.. and with p3, we could really screw their plans.

Or we can keep pick 5 and not give up our second thanks. We will get a mid- that’s the key thing. Don’t need to trade up to do this!

I’m so happy GWS have traded up actually
