I dont understand why harley is copping it...hes managed to pry out a league top 5 kpf father son from one the games biggest clubs....massive coup for him
I think it's pathetic from the media that they refuse to take his and Daniher's word that there was no discussion about a move in August. I also think it's laughable one article was written with the tone that Sydney was attempting to pry out a contracted player when he nominated us, while in the same article spoke of Papley desperately trying to get back to Melbourne and we'd be arseholes if we didn't get him there.

Why Essendon must play hard ball on ‘irreplaceable’ Daniher
Matthew Lloyd
October 6, 2019 — 6.19pm
There’s every chance that Joe Daniher will play for the Essendon Football Club in 2020, despite having only played 11 games in the past two seasons.
Daniher is irreplaceable at the Bombers as nobody else on the playing list comes close to what he can produce in the forward line.
In demand: Essendon forward Joe Daniher.

In demand: Essendon forward Joe Daniher.Paul Rovere
Essendon must stand strong and not trade Daniher to Sydney unless the deal sees them land a like-for-like replacement to become the central figure in the club’s forward line next season. Failure to do so would likely see the Bombers treading water again, and the finals-winning drought will almost certainly extend to a 16th season.
Essendon cannot go into season 2020 with a forward line led by Shaun McKernan and Mitch Brown. As competitive and honest as they are, they are role players who play secondary roles to the number one forward.
Jake Stringer has won Essendon’s goalkicking award for the past two seasons with 30 and 34 goals, respectively, while Daniher was injured. Numbers like that are not going to put fear into Alex Rance, Dylan Grimes, David Astbury and Bachar Houli next year. A fit Daniher would, which is why Essendon must play hard ball with him and the Swans.
This year’s national draft does not have a two-metre tall key position standout like Ben or Max King. This is a draft filled with midfielders and flankers at the top end. If Sydney are to offer up pick five for Daniher, it won’t make sense to take it. Adding another midfield type like Darcy Parish, who went at pick five in 2015, would leave Essendon without a key forward capable of kicking 60 goals in a season.
Questions will be asked of Greater Western Sydney spearhead and Coleman Medal winner Jeremy Cameron - but he isn’t going anywhere - and of Gold Coast’s Ben King. But again, King is worth more to the Suns than a midfielder with pick five so King isn’t going anywhere, either. King has already become the Suns’ most valuable commodity so they would not trade him in this year’s window. The Suns don’t need any more draft picks; they just need King’s signature.
Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd says he is confused by mixed messages surrounding the future of star forward Joe Daniher
With no like-for-like replacement around for Daniher and no ideal player in the national draft to compensate for his loss in the forward line, Essendon would then ask the question of Isaac Heeney or Nick Blakey being traded for Daniher.
Both Heeney and Blakey have lived in Sydney for all or most of their lives and would not want to leave. Nor would the Swans be willing to trade them, but Carlton didn’t want to trade Josh Kennedy to the West Coast Eagles for Chris Judd, either. They just had to, to get the deal done.
I really don’t see a compromise being reached between the two clubs, which is why I believe Daniher is a massive chance to play for the Bombers against his wishes next season. Do not rule out Daniher being forced to see out the final year of his contract, just as a former Swan Ryan O’Keefe did successfully a decade ago after his trade request to the Hawks was rejected.
Daniher has cited a lifestyle change as the reason for wanting to move to Sydney but there has to be more to it, as it was only 12 months ago that he was part of the successful pitch to get Dylan Shiel to Essendon. One of the attractions for Shiel would have been playing with Daniher, and Shiel would be well aware that losing Daniher only takes his new club further away from winning their first final since 2004.
I also wonder whether the actions of Swans chief executive Tom Harley will make it harder for the two clubs to reach a deal after he spoke so publicly in July of how the Swans had no intention of poaching Daniher and that he was only catching up with Daniher in his role as his mentor.
Bombers chief executive Xavier Campbell must feel let down by his Swans counterpart in Harley, but the Essendon members must also feel let down by their own club. They now face the possibility of losing two quality young players in Daniher and Orazio Fantasia, who is likely to request a trade to Port Adelaide, leaving the club they were once so passionate about.

Harley is copping it because some people don't like him and when you ask them why they respond with something along the lines of "I just don't". It is a mystery.

Maybe this will shock a few on here as to how dumb this trade is going to be.

We will laugh and say 'that will never happen'. But Essendon are going to demand a ridiculous package and we are going to end up giving them something really really good.

If it isn't pick 5 and 9. It will be pick 5 and one of our young players like rowbottom or florent.

Then we will say, no worries, we will just take him as a free agent next year and you will get whatever compensation pick the AFL pulls out of their arse.

Well we can put away the excitement pills for 12 months based on that opinion piece, Essendon demands will be so silly we'll say sorry Joe, we were into you in good faith but can't sell the farm, see you next year.

If from early in trade week this deal is obviously not getting done, we just need to get on with other deals and let Essendon sort out 2020. We don't need a KPF right now, we do need quality mids.

or more likely we will just give them pick 5 and pick 9, which would be the biggest trade package since judd went to west coast.

And the biggest overpay in recent history. Making weller to GC look like shrewd list management.

Bolded bit is so true, after Ellis, clubs will be really worried about what the KFC recipe will give them for FA compo.

Relax Personally i dont think a trade will happen for that reason their demands are going to be silly Daniher will be a Swan if not now then in 12 months.

Lloyd neglects to mention what Essen would receive in compensation if he went next year as a RFA - one pick after their first. So at best, this year his worth is, around , a 1st and 2nd, imo

if we dont get daniher and even just lose jones and papley and have another nothing trade period, that will be remembered more

fell bottom 4, extended the coach early for some reason etc

we need to do something

Drafting in two young elite talents wouldn't be a waste. Just like getting Rowbottom and Blakey last year wasn't either.

Even IF Daniher comes back to full health (low probability given family history and the injury in general) and his best ever form we aren't within a bull's roar of getting past GWS or Richmond next year. Anyone looking at it honestly knows this I think. Nowhere near enough, run, carry, skill, cohesion through the midfield to challenge IMO. Ruck looking dicey AF. Our defense is one potential injury (to AA or Rampe) away from being an utter disaster.

All I want is Serong/Flanders and McCasey in the draft. Pick up a couple of depth guys with upside, Mitch Hibberd as a midfielder being one, Taylor from Brisbane an option too.

The only reason this is happening at all is Joe's management want a contract locked-in so if he comes back and cannot move he gets all the $$$. WTF do we want to play this game?????? Is Daniher going to give us so much more than McCartin and Reid next year to make this all worthwhile?

Anyway I'll give it a rest. We are getting JD unless the Bombers are too stubborn (🤞) Just waiting for the sword of Damocles regarding the opportunity cost... :(

absolutely no chance of rowbottom of florent going. even though you might like to think it sometimes, the recruiters and list managers know what they are doing better than you and I

And besides that we don’t win in this at all. Lose our most influential player for some magic beans.
Sad times for the majority of Bombers fans, please look after him and I guess we will be seeing you in round 1

Round one is optimistic with his injury history why put that as the round 1 game if he isn’t ready to play. Round 6

Contrary to other opinion I have empathy towards clubs losing a big name player as a supporter you get a fair bit of enjoyment following someone who lights it up for you. Would be thrilled to see him at the Swans of course but there is no joy from me towards bomber supporters. You may still win the trade with what you get in return and might turn into your next fan favourite. Lot of water to go under the bridge but I do feel for you in that respect. As a kid I was completely devastated when Capper went to the Bears didn’t turn out well for him but didn’t do much for the Swans either.

firstly dont give it a rest, all good debate

2 average kids wont help us much, im not sold the depth is there, could be wrong obviously, but is this draft that good

list is already filled with young players who wont make it or aren't ready

we have some good talent, would love to fix it and try to contend

there arent that many good teams

buddy and daniher gives us a real dynamic duo

is it a risk? yes no doubt, but why not
