firstly dont give it a rest, all good debate

2 average kids wont help us much, im not sold the depth is there, could be wrong obviously, but is this draft that good

list is already filled with young players who wont make it or aren't ready

we have some good talent, would love to fix it and try to contend

there arent that many good teams

buddy and daniher gives us a real dynamic duo

is it a risk? yes no doubt, but why not
I'd be happy for 9 and 25, would like to see if we get Serong at 5 though.

I'd argue against that across the last few years, I'd back my draft picking over them every day of the week. I'd have taken Constable and Worpel for example and based off my record I'd be doing better than them.
Tools my friend, Rowbottom wasn’t in the others’ draft class!

give them reid and 5

tell him to go get a fresh start
That's way too much. Most Melbourne commentators have said he's worth around pick 10, some go a tad further by saying 10 and pick 30. Our pick 9 from Papley alone should do it. If we do 5 and 9 like some people are saying it'll be lunacy.

Apparently we were interested in Jack Newnes last year, but that interest has cooled. Blake Acres was the other name that has been thrown up a bit. There really isn't much on the Saints list that would excite anyone.

In an ideal world we would be able to trade Papley and Jones for two real midfielders. I think the team comes out ahead if we do that because there is enough quality on the list already in the small forward and running half back/wing positions to cover those roles internally, while full time midfield depth needs to be improved.
Yeah I agree with you on this front. We will just need Hayward and Ronke to re-find a bt of form to minimise the loss of Papley.

Do not cave in this time, stick to what's fair given his recent injury history and be prepared to walk away until next year when there's more leverage for us.

Still think we should work on Jones to Essendon into the deal despite the might Saints being his preferred club.

Last year it was King about Blakey.

This year it’s Lloyd about Daniher.

They really do think the Northern clubs are merely development clubs to sort out what talent is worthy of poaching.

Did you hear the Noah Anderson interview on Trade Radio? literally throwing lines out did it cross your mind you could of been playing infront of 90k at the MCG, who wouldnt wanna play for Collingwood, Richmond or Hawthorn.

Where is the article Carlton doing the same with Papley?
Don’t hold your breath for that one. If we had a Sydney newspaper that actually gave a **** we might get some decent pushback, but thats not gonna happen in my lifetime.

Why Essendon must play hard ball on ‘irreplaceable’ Daniher
Matthew Lloyd
October 6, 2019 — 6.19pm
There’s every chance that Joe Daniher will play for the Essendon Football Club in 2020, despite having only played 11 games in the past two seasons.
Daniher is irreplaceable at the Bombers as nobody else on the playing list comes close to what he can produce in the forward line.
In demand: Essendon forward Joe Daniher.

In demand: Essendon forward Joe Daniher.Paul Rovere
Essendon must stand strong and not trade Daniher to Sydney unless the deal sees them land a like-for-like replacement to become the central figure in the club’s forward line next season. Failure to do so would likely see the Bombers treading water again, and the finals-winning drought will almost certainly extend to a 16th season.
Essendon cannot go into season 2020 with a forward line led by Shaun McKernan and Mitch Brown. As competitive and honest as they are, they are role players who play secondary roles to the number one forward.
Jake Stringer has won Essendon’s goalkicking award for the past two seasons with 30 and 34 goals, respectively, while Daniher was injured. Numbers like that are not going to put fear into Alex Rance, Dylan Grimes, David Astbury and Bachar Houli next year. A fit Daniher would, which is why Essendon must play hard ball with him and the Swans.
This year’s national draft does not have a two-metre tall key position standout like Ben or Max King. This is a draft filled with midfielders and flankers at the top end. If Sydney are to offer up pick five for Daniher, it won’t make sense to take it. Adding another midfield type like Darcy Parish, who went at pick five in 2015, would leave Essendon without a key forward capable of kicking 60 goals in a season.
Questions will be asked of Greater Western Sydney spearhead and Coleman Medal winner Jeremy Cameron - but he isn’t going anywhere - and of Gold Coast’s Ben King. But again, King is worth more to the Suns than a midfielder with pick five so King isn’t going anywhere, either. King has already become the Suns’ most valuable commodity so they would not trade him in this year’s window. The Suns don’t need any more draft picks; they just need King’s signature.
Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd says he is confused by mixed messages surrounding the future of star forward Joe Daniher
With no like-for-like replacement around for Daniher and no ideal player in the national draft to compensate for his loss in the forward line, Essendon would then ask the question of Isaac Heeney or Nick Blakey being traded for Daniher.
Both Heeney and Blakey have lived in Sydney for all or most of their lives and would not want to leave. Nor would the Swans be willing to trade them, but Carlton didn’t want to trade Josh Kennedy to the West Coast Eagles for Chris Judd, either. They just had to, to get the deal done.
I really don’t see a compromise being reached between the two clubs, which is why I believe Daniher is a massive chance to play for the Bombers against his wishes next season. Do not rule out Daniher being forced to see out the final year of his contract, just as a former Swan Ryan O’Keefe did successfully a decade ago after his trade request to the Hawks was rejected.
Daniher has cited a lifestyle change as the reason for wanting to move to Sydney but there has to be more to it, as it was only 12 months ago that he was part of the successful pitch to get Dylan Shiel to Essendon. One of the attractions for Shiel would have been playing with Daniher, and Shiel would be well aware that losing Daniher only takes his new club further away from winning their first final since 2004.
I also wonder whether the actions of Swans chief executive Tom Harley will make it harder for the two clubs to reach a deal after he spoke so publicly in July of how the Swans had no intention of poaching Daniher and that he was only catching up with Daniher in his role as his mentor.
Bombers chief executive Xavier Campbell must feel let down by his Swans counterpart in Harley, but the Essendon members must also feel let down by their own club. They now face the possibility of losing two quality young players in Daniher and Orazio Fantasia, who is likely to request a trade to Port Adelaide, leaving the club they were once so passionate about.
I hope this is the way the trade deal falls. Daniher can stay at Essendon for 2020 and prove to all and sundry that he has recovered from his groin issues. If so, we will gladly welcome him to our club in 2021 as a free agent. If he shows next year that he is yet to recover his full fitness (which I feel is more likely) we could still take him as a FA but on half the $$$ we would be paying him if the deal got done now.
With pick 5, we pick up either Serong or Young who will complement the inclusion of our two academy kids next year.
Papley stays for at least the next two years. All the talk about him wanting to go back to Melbourne for family reasons is crap imho. The fact that we are paying him around $350K and Carlton have offered him $600K is the only reason he wants to go back to Melbourne. I would not be at all surprised if the Swans make him a better offer now even though he is already contracted.

Wow. I didn't realise Harley had done that trade. That's it. I've had enough of him now. I can't believe he did that trade! He is hopeless. Unforgivable.
Thanks for thanks for the hysteria, what a pathetic response, I said “if” and he has oversight and influence on trades.

i think daniher is leaving next year no way he stays now

so they risk having a disgruntled player we all know doesnt want to be there hanging around the already pathetic club in 2020

trade will happen
There are plenty of players who have stated that they wanted to leave only to be denied by the club holding their contract. These players still went on to perform very well the next year. Ryan O'Keefe and Tim Kelly are the most obvious ones.
I don't understand your logic in continually saying "get him in now" when it could cost us pick 5 and Papley. Particularly when we can get him 12 months later for nothing. What is the advantage of having him play with us in 2020 when we will still be somewhat short of contending. 2021 and beyond is when we will be a force again. More importantly, there is no guarantee that he has even recovered from his groin issues. The fact that Essendon have not offered him a contract extension would suggest he hasn't.
If we were to do what you suggest, we are taking ALL the risk for little or no value.

We need to call Essendon's bluff and white noise.

They have tried to anchor the price at 5 and 9 so if wee pay up 5 and 25 we feels like it is a 'bargain'.

Daniher is 25 and hasnt play in two seasons. He could be cooked. He is worth pick 9 but not more. I'd probably even do 9 and 25.

They have actually played it really smart bluffing that he is a absolutely required player.

I was purely highlighting your hysteria about being bent over in a trade that hasn't been done. I was astounded at the inside information that you had which justified your vitriol against Harley.

Agree, much rather get Serong, Papely and Daniher, than just Daniher.

I ask people disagreeing with us is which deal is better in three years time? Having Serong, Papely and Daniher in our club or just Daniher?

plenty of players ? not really and the difference was Okeefe and now Kelly wanted to go home, Daniher is not from NSW

The logic to get him now is so you get him, dont give essendon 12 months to change now and to improve our list next year, give us certainty for cap space going forward for other deals, maximise buddy and jpk etc. you know try to win...perhaps contend

why is there no guarantee he isnt recovered? he wont do a swans medical? groin injures are never cured?

yes it is a risk, playing safe with the list wont achieve much imo
