So teams are now working on letting oppositions win the ball so they can pressure them to win it over from them......yeah right. Talk soon...

This is a pretty common tactic and one that is pretty clear in the fact Richmond, the premier were so bad at it. High contested possessions, if most of them are ineffective, is not a great indicator of a successful side. This doesn't mean you let the opposition get the ball but try to force a rushed kick or handball, where you can pressure for a turnover.

Sorry but I think you are the one not acknowledging contested possessions is still being thought of as no. 1 priority.

It clearly isn't a priority at all considering the premier 2 of the last 3 seasons, has the lowest clearance numbers in the whole league, not even top 10 for tackles.
This doesn't mean its for everyone, as you play to your strengths.

Walsh was never on the line for Shiel and a little extra thrown in.
We obviously wanted Walsh a long way out and unless GC had ponied up with some combination of picks 2,3 and 6, Walsh wasn't getting away from us.

If though GC would have offered up 3 & 6 for the #1, I dare say Rankine and Caldwell would have been on the books. Just a guess.
Would be interesting to know how highly SOS rated Smith having seen him go through Xavs with BSOS.

Having watched the Tigers in round 21, I think the Tigers focus more on getting quality clearances that getting a high number of clearances. Ed Curnow's hook it around the body clearances are not that valuable compared with Edwards running from a contest and spotting up a forward target. Would trade 2 for 1 any day.

Can't be completely sure but everything leading up to draft night and the story thereafter -
1. Walsh 2/3. Rankine/Lukosius 4. MKing 5. Caldwell 6. Stocker.
I'm pretty sure that was the order and if it wasn't 1,5,+ 6 are right though....I seem to recall.

You wouldn't think that Smith, Rozee and BKing would have been too far behind that grouping though.

As much as he liked MKing, he was not a need and was not being considered. I do recall Rozee coming to the club in the days leading up to the draft so I would have had him closer to the top 3.

I won't suggest I'm right, but this is what I recall although i don't recall where I heard/saw it.
I would though think that MKing would have still been high on SOS's hit list.

You might likely have heard it from SOS himself; he made public comment via media that he thought King would turn into a gun.

Cripps and shiel wouldve been a great one-two punch at centre clearances and stoppages. Very hard to counter until his errant kick into the forward 50 errant was too difficult for our talls to mark and spilled to our nonexistent crumbers...

We were trying to nab both Setters and Shiel though and its pretty pbvious why
Dow will give us the same output by 2021.

The ‘one-two punch’ will be one hell of a combo by then: Cripps-Walsh-Setters-Dow-Stocker-SPS-Martin-O’Brien-Fish-DC...

Biggest concern for the club right now is what size statue we build for SOS and the recruiting department after this off season

Betts & Papley now done (although Papley could be delayed due to Fanta and shuffling of picks). Martin close to being done in principal but need clarity around Papley first.

Good to hear! Fantastic news!

With the additions of Betts, Papley and Martin, I can't see why we wouldn't be pushing for finals. It'd be the cherry on top if we still managed to squeeze in some of the depth players we've been linked to (Butler, Cutler, Knight), or even the so called "unnamed player" a few people are going on about in the Bluemour thread.

Exciting times!

I was under the impression that Rozee was in the 6.

If Shiel had selected us, we would have lost pick 1, Walsh, as well as a 1st this year. Perhaps we may have got a late 1st back

Multiple best 22 players, Walsh, Stocker, Papley, etc, over 1 mid age mid

Losing Shiel was probably the best thing to happen to this club since SOS joined as list manager. Plus we screwed * as well .... made them overpay big time! Bwahahaha

Yep, so maybe winning contested footy isn't the be all and end all but other factors?
I am pretty sure Hawthorn during their three flag period had near bottom of the table contested ball numbers as well. But smashed sides on uncontested posession footy. The key being exceptional disposal by hand and foot.

Should things pan out as have been communicated here then SOS has done an incredible job. i.e. Papley, Martin and Betts utilising only this years picks.

I'm still finding it a little hard to get my head around how other parties would agree to suggested trades.
The trick isn't so much about getting all those players as it is to leave next years 1st and 2nd intact.
This is important if we want to reman in play for a 'surprise' hit at another target, as with even next years second out of the equation, the first cannot be used.

I feel strong that next years first may yet be used for the 'right' player this year and if we don't get that deal over the line, it has to be in play for what we will need after the 2020 season.

EDIT: I now recall Hawthorn were allowed to sell off their first and second in the same year, or at least go to the draft without either.

It will be a challenge to come up with a game plan to beat this latest trend. We still have numerous players that have a tendency to turn the ball over and a slow backline. I don't think the beast midfield wins games anymore.

Don't forget the Stocker trade was this year's pick as well. Yes SOS is genius if he pulls this all off.

The Stocker deal was always relevant given our rating of him.
We rated him at #6 in a strong draft and even one year out, we knew it wasn't the draft we wanted to go to in 2019.
Fact is that the deal made perfect sense, but our rating of the player has to play out. These are two different things which many opposition supporters and media-types, did not understand.

I just want to now see how SOS is going to pull off signing Papley and Martin, using only our 2019 draft picks.
Should he get it done....it will be good.

Here is what I hope to happen this trade period.

Carlton receive- Papley and pick 37
Sydney receive- Daniher and pick 31
Essendon receive- pick 5 & 9

Carlton receive- Martin & 2020 3rd round
GC receive- Casboult & 2020 2nd round

Carlton receive- Betts
Crows receive- pick 84

Carlton receive- Bulter
Richmond receive- pick 71

Carlton picks 37, 42, 47
Out- Casboult, pick 9, 71 & 84 & 2020 3rd round
In- Papley, Martin, Betts, Bulter and 2020 2nd round

We don't have to become Richmond we have to be a brilliant and exciting Carlton that has excellent footy skills and is tough..

I want us to be innovators, not imitators...
