English mustered 20 games for the year Omega Blue
What would we be saying about De Koning should he knock up that sort of number in his third year?

Whether De Koning plays in the seniors or the reserves, there's a battering to be had playing ruck.
Some of those second-string ruck-men go pretty hard also and if one wants to make impact, they have to work hard and perform in the same manner they'd be playing in the seniors.

OK, De Koning won't be getting 20 games next year but if he does have to step up, He'll have to step up and again - Opportunity can be a wonderful thing.

English was in his third year this year, just as De Koning will be next year. Apples and apples.

English is an unusual example.

The dogs haven't had a decent ruckman since Luke Darcy other than a couple of good years from Wil Minson.

English is as much a giant midfielder as he is a ruckman. I've seen him get destroyed regularly in the ruck but even up the legder somewhat around the ground.

Given he's that kind of player the Dogs (who have no one else) are willing to play him before he is physically developed.

Every player is different, of course. But I wouldn't be using English's development timeline as a blueprint for others. Most will need 3-4 years of filling out before they are getting regular ruck minutes.

I liked this:

The list is in great shape.

Carlton already has nine A and B-grade players, including co-captains Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty, while I see a further eight players who have the talent to develop into A or B-graders (read on to see my full list breakdown).

To compete for a premiership a team needs a mix of at least 12-14 A and B-grade players, so if the likes of Sam Walsh, Harry McKay and Paddy Dow can keep improving, then I see the Blues having at least 14 on their list in the coming seasons (removing Kade Simpson, Matthew Kreuzer and Marc Murphy who are nearing the end of their careers), while it doesn’t take into account the stars this club will be able to attract through the free agency and trade periods as their on-field performance improves.

And this:
So how do the Blues get deals for Papley, Martin and Eddie Betts done? Everyone is saying it’ll be pick No. 9 for Papley but there is no way he’s worth that. He’s contracted at Sydney, which increases his trade value, but pick No. 9 is overs. In terms of clever small forwards like Daniel Rioli, is Papley in their class? No way. He’s a good player but is he going to be in Carlton’s best 10 players? Probably not.

I’d be asking for pick No. 25 back from the Swans in the deal.

Then there's GB's closing line:
I think the Blues can seriously challenge for the premiership as soon as 2021.

Not sure why we wouldn't? Having one guy who can cover three roles to a relatively high standard is the ultimate insurance policy.

He's physically in great shape, playing with confidence, I assume on a value contract...and he's ours.

Who are we realistically targeting who can perform to the same level, for the same price, without the expectation of being a best 22 lock?

100% agree Kramer man.

Now I am confused....

Silvagni saying we aren't interested in Dan Butler. (7:40am today)
https://www.watoday.com.au/sport/afl/live-afl-trade-period-day-one-20191007-p52y7l.html

Mick Agresta saying we are still in the hunt for him (Around 10:30 today)

Does the left hand know what the right hand is doing?????

While I didn't hear SOS' interview, I think Agresta was just being more pragmatic. Didn't sound overly keen.

I'm confused, you take anything they say seriously? Are they really going to tell the media our plans?

So you think saying we have no interest in a player to then come out and say he needs to nominate us if he wants to come looks good?

Say nothing or be on the same page. Simple.

We're starting with picks: 9; 42; 47; 71; and 84. We'll wave bye-bye to at least two of those in trade week.

We have to recruit three players in the national draft, and we won't have a lot of collateral. Do we have some smokies in mind?.

Pretty sure we'll have a pick in the top 30, and another pick at the top of the 3rd round. If we don't, it'll be because we brought in a nice haul of players that will feature in the 22, and we'll elevate a rookie if we don't have the draft currency.

IMO, I'm not fussed with what we can gather using pick 42, 47 and 71 (which will probably be a shade further up the order than that, particularly the last pick).

Did SOS actually say that though? The media are very good at twisting words.

The soundbyte that I heard had SOS saying that "Butler is not in the picture currently". This could very easily mean that we're waiting to hear from his management but indications are that he'll go elsewhere so we're not making it a priority unless he tells us he wants to play for us - which is pretty damn close to what Agresta said.

The media were crapping on about SOS and Agresta not being on the same page but I didn't get that at all from the sound-bytes I heard, it was more just the two choosing to see the same situation from slightly different angles and the media trying to invent a non-existent story.

Having said that - we should strongly consider only having one of them speak to the media or the opportunity for this sort of story will arise often, as people express things differently.

Outside of SOS can anyone name these guys in our recruiting team? Always been interested who’s who.
Cheers.
