Scenario:
We cut 2 more and give ourselves 5 picks in the draft

So it's draft night...pick 13 comes around and goes...We've got Stephens and Luke Jackson in the shed using 7 and ten

Liam Henry is still on the board....as are Gould, Robertson, Sharp and Rivers.

1st pick 2020 to Geelong for 14 and 17? Yay or nay?

Big freaking yay from me
Not sure Geelong would do that trade but I'd agree from our side.

I really wanted to keep our 1st pick next year as I don't want the extra pressure on JLo & the coaches while a new game plan is getting worked out. Media will have a frenzy if we finish bottom 4 but 14 & 17 is very appealing if there are great options and they can all develop together.

At the Carlton home game this year his knee was clearly giving him some strife in the warm up, but in typical S&C fashion we rolled him out and he battled manfully in the circumstances. Wasn’t his best game, but we were pretty crap all over to lose to the Tankers at home.

Sean Darcy got absolutely lined up and smashed in the Melbourne game the week before the Carlton game. He was left standing under a high ball and the Demon's player, rightly or wrongly, took his chance to put on a heavy body spoil.

Darcy was carrying that back soreness, euphemism, for a while.

It was very effective. He was outplayed from that point on. Ugly side of the game, but if a key structural opposition player was standing waiting for a mark and one of our players had a chance to put a knee up and "make him earn it" but he doesn't - I'd be disappointed, in a proud way.

I think Cal Twomey's phantom draft had 9 Victorian kids + Tom Green who is linked to the Giants in his top ten so based on that we'd be really unlucky if someone bid on Henry before pick 10.

Why uproot a 67kg small forward from WA with your early pick when there are plenty of local lads ranked higher by many and are more likely to play next year.
Because there's only a very small chance you end up with him and a very high chance you prevent an opponent from getting 2 valuable picks in before their academy player bid, and on the off chance we don't match they're still getting a very good player who fits a need and is around the mark.

Maybe i'm being paranoid.

That’s where the conditioning team should come in and give him a week off.

We played Carlton on June 30th.

Sandi, Tabs, Lobb, Hogan, Pearce were all out and Jones had been back from a calf issue for a couple of weeks.

AFL players play with niggles, when they are young they learn to play through them.

Oh well, we lost. If we are in a final and Sean has a corkie he knows he can push through that now and it might win us a game later when it actually matters.

I actually think that whilst he likes Freo, Henry is professional enough to go anywhere and not be a significant flight risk. Remember he is coming from a long way away in the country to play football anyway. Also I get the impression he would have a positive impact and interaction on his teammates wherever he is.
Yeah. He said as much.

what if I told you, the coach had a finger in the pie, regarding availability.

what if the recommendation was for a week off, but if push comes to shove he can play, then “match committee” select him.

I don’t know this for sure, but it seems very plausible. Some very weird things happened late in the year regarding availability.

We already have 5 picks in the draft. Six available list spots, one reserved for Giro.

Hughes has also been upgraded.
I know Hughes inked a new deal early in the season but the article doesn't make it clear that he's going to be upgraded, happy to be proven wrong, it just says that his deal will see him at the club until the end of 2022. Doesn't have to be upgraded until the end of 2021 which would be his third year on the rookie list because remember he was redrafted end of last season.

I do think we'll try and get a pick between our 10 and 22 though. Bell said that he was interested in improving our draft position when he was interviewed after the Hill trade.

The assumption of the Hughes-> main list I think is because rookie contracts are necessarily 1 year in length and his was 2. That may not be true.

I’d say that given that our head of S & C is still with us while our head coach has been given the flick, it’s a very plausible opinion

Coach shouldn’t be overruling the conditioning team.

remember this so clearly, it broke my heart because he was putting in quite a performance and easily matching max gawn. After it happened max got over him pretty easily from there and the commentators started talking about how Darcy had a few lessons to learn and Max in the press conference started talking himself up about how versatile he was to make changes to get over him like a big ****ing hero when the reality was all he did was take advantage of playing on an injured kid who his teammate ran through :mad::mad::mad::mad:

& while i'm venting, Our 20 year old significantly defeated a premiership & AA ruck duo, and then was matching the output of a multiple AA ruckman who is arguably the best in the competition before getting injured throughout the game and some of you numpties are saying he should be delisted, trade bait or dropped????
you've got to be ****ing joking!!!!!!!!!!!! he's got a way to go, but he is easily the best young prospect in the game and is going to be dominating in a few years time.

Playing or training through injuries is old thinking and just leads to overuse injuries and possible long term issues.

Maybe, that thinking lead to our team being injured all the time.

Smart load management is the way of the future.

Selecting players who can’t last a game isn’t a good ideaThe last quarter we got overrun.

Ric Charlesworth when coaching the women’s National Hockey didn’t play injured players. The result was greater depth and competition for selection.

When does a niggle become an injury?

Plenty of times I've had pain but no strength issues or movement restrictions and I've been able to work through that without it making it any worse.

Darcy clearly was struggling in the Blues game.

I am pretty sure players do fitness tests before games.

If you can’t pass the fitness test based on objective criteria, then the player shouldn’t play.

I just finished reading most of the 1700 odd Connor Menadue posts in the Richmond forum. Gotta say, I'd love to see us pick up this kid and give him another chance to make a name for himself. The dude has an engine on him for sure. :):thumbsu:

I've heard from a couple of different sources that this was very much the sort of environment our S&C team were working in under Lyon. Not just for games but training availability too.

Jason Weber has an impressive CV and has been at the club since 2008. I also seem to remember us having a pretty good injury run between 2012-14. The rumours about Lyon being dictatorial over decisions are plausible but Weber should be experienced enough to put his foot down.

I think it's more to do with how Lyon wanted us to play and how he wanted the build of the players. Lyon led over a demanding game style focused on congestion and pressure with the requirement for flexibility (play multiple roles). Players like Stephen Hill were bulking up to be able to play both inside and outside - it took its toll on some.

I'm happy for Weber to be in the role over the next year or two under a new regime. Too much change at once causes way too much instability!
