This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

How do you think they project in terms of being ready to play, and forward versus ruck ability? Marking?

One of the traps we end up with a purer ruck prospect like Meek is development ends up happening at wafl level unless injury hits. Could either Neale or Lane develop in a forward role earlier as cover for Lobb either injured or Lobb playing first ruck if Darcy injured?
Kalin Lane already has a mature body and can move around the ground like a midfielder like Brodie Grundy or to a lesser extent Oscar McInerney, he can rest forward but plays more like an extra midfielder. Shannon Neale is the more natural forward when not rucking, but still doesn't hit the scoreboard very often, 5 goals in 9 games this year in the WAFL. Kalin Lane is more ready than Shannon Neale to step into a team if needed, but both would need forward craft to be a focus in their development.

Neale does a lot of things really well, he just doesn't always do them for long enough or often enough. He can take really good grabs, has good leading patterns (at times), and is generally a smooth mover. More about potential at this stage.

Ruckmen are such a tricky spot. Don't need to be quick to impact a stoppage. Can't be slow to impact forward. Can be a plodder and find space to get involved around the ground in general play.

Contested marking for a tall should be important, but if you can impact the stoppage enough you don't need to.

Despite what I said, I think I'd take Shannon Neale over Kalin Lane, too. I should've stated that.

On Clark, best chance we’d have is if Cameron goes to Geelong. As a performing first round pick he’d be on 400k+ the next two years. If Geelong are squeezing Cameron in on 850k+ you would think someone needs to fall out

Want to see more of Neale so my comment is conditional...but I can't see him being AFL ready inside four years
If he hasn't played a game in 4 years this mob would be burning down the club if he wasn't cut. Darcy's played 41 in 4 years, and is pretty dominant for a young ruckman, but still there are calls for him to be traded. All we are looking for is a decent backup ruck/forward

Meek has 0 in three.

Ruckmen and big guys generally take a while to develop. Always exceptions like the King lads.

It may be a 4 year timeframe, BUT with reduced list sizes, are long development time lines a prudent use of valuable list spots.

Or do they wait for development leagues to bring them on a bit and have the risk reduced, but exposure increased for other clubs to step in.

Any decent 20-21YO ruck/forwards kicking around in the Development leagues?

I note Lobb was drafted at 20yo

No way, the best way to describe him is budget Langdon (same ball use, gets less of it), Phillips lost his wing spot this season to Daicos, wasn't able to maintain the quality of footy he brought in 2018
Speaking of Daicos, I'm a big fan of him. Extremely unlikely he leaves Collingwood in general, but that's someone I hope JL targets, he fits a need and has plenty of outside skill

Langdon has played 10 games in 2 years.

He will slot straight into that WC team and play that Jamie Cripps style role perfectly for the next 10 years, we'll regret missing him without doubt.

He had a kicking efficiency of 33% this year (~1 effective kick per game) and kicked 2 goals over 7 games with an accuracy of 22%.

If we were trading in a 24yo small forward with those numbers I'd be wondering if our recruitment team had a serious drug problem. The last thing we need is another pressure forward on our list who struggles to hit the scoreboard nor create scoring opportunities for others. If he is their new Cripps then WC are heading toward a deeper hole than I thought they were.
