Hopefully it's because Carlisle is staying. He's better than any of the options that anyone has mentioned anyway.
Are you talking shit about Witherden? You better not be.

I’m not suggesting at Carlisle’s expense I’m saying as back up to him .. if he gets injured would you be happy to go into another final let’s say against Hipwood Danniher McStay mccinerney with the same options we had at our disposal when Carlisle was ruled out of the Richmond game??

We need a back up / developing key
There was a bit of talk abut Payne from Brisbane which would be a good young pick up but it's hard to see Brisbane not getting him signed up. We do need some more depth so will be interesting to see what happens.

Steele was pretty handy at the Giants playing forward, but yeah he took a little time once he came over.

That real high half forward role might suit him as he'll be around the footy quite a bit.

Steele is a mid, he came to us so he could play as a mid.

Don’t think he’s a key to be honest he’s a 3rd intercept tall. Carlisle goes down next year do you trust you could bring him in to play on Daniher or hipwood? I don’t think so

Clav is a pretty big boy, he hasn't filled out yet but he's got the height and athleticism to go with the Danihers and Hipwoods.

Most KD's these days are intercepters... Doug is a nice mix but more defensively minded.

I'd have a crack at Robbie Tarrant for a few years... by then we'll know if Clav is going to make it or not.

He has played one full season in his career thus far. Including two full seasons where he didnt play a game.

He has never been durable. Why would that suddenly change now?
I think with surgery he needed for 3yrs and never got, that side of things will improve. If he plays 17/22 a year, but most importantly finals - I can’t see why we wouldn’t be happy with that. The draft is shallow, we only have pick 15ish anyway.. think it’s a smart move. We need more clearance bodies to help Steele. I can’t see anyone else in the next year or two that would be available anyway.

Surprised there’s been not much talk of a key back for us I would’ve thought it’d be a priority.. we were really exposed without Carlisle in the final and no suitable option to replace him we definitely need a back up / developing key back

Howard , Battle, Carlisle , ( and less recently ) Marshall can play key back. Then there is ( emergency break glass ) Marsh, Clavarino and Joyce.
Meanwhile players with experience in the Ruck.....Marshal, Ryder......Howard..........

Have I missed something? I could swear that jones was an inside mid not an outside mid. Same goes for Gresham. Why are we plonking him on the wing?

Inside vs outside is a little simplistic in my opinion.

Jones is at his best when he gets a handball receive in congestion and then uses his pace to break away. Now unless you're Dangerfield, it's pretty rare to be both (a) winning the contested loose ball; and (b) breaking away with speed. So because Jones isn't Danger, he is ideally the second or third in the handball chain rather than the first. Meaning, he gets the ball on the inside and disposes of it on the outside?

Steele and Crouch are much better suited to be the first handball in the chain IMO, although Steele can do a number of roles.

The joy of Ryder is that his tapwork can be effectively like the first handball in the chain, meaning that Jones can be a pure insider at Paddy's feet. But going forward, that isn't going to work as well and we need Steele and Crouch to be doing the heavy lifting to release the runners.

Remember back when we were excited when Nathan Freeman chose us?

Yeah, we've come a long way lol.

My gut tells me that we will be paying for Crouch exactly what the AFL has told the Crows will get them a band 1 compo.

Adelaide is the big club in SA and the league will be extremely keen to see them rise up again ASAP.

Any shifty minor deals done between the Crows and us that facilitate the big game will be neither here nor there.

They'll be plenty of back up depth available from the Delisted Free Agent list this season.

I think Saints fans will react a lot better if/once Caldwell commits. At the moment it feels like, at least to some, like a consolation prize rather than the real deal. Once Caldwell commits, watch them all say how good Crouch will be as an addition and that it was always a terrific get. Understandable given how Caldwell matches our long term needs more, but when considered in isolation, Crouch instantly makes us better.

That’s annoying.

Means Crows will probably match and force a trade

And they don’t get pick 2 so we don’t see the flogs on other boards melt

If they force a trade it gets messy for them.

We have 15. If they get pick 19 from free agency that's really not worth the angst.
I don't think we want to cough up our first rounder, so they get to keep him and have to pay him a bigger contract than they want to.

Spot on. Crouch is the best midfielder that is actually available and does not cost draft picks to get in. He's the perfect fit for us.

He's a solid B grader that will strengthen our midfield rather than a superstar A grader but they are hard to get unless you're lucky like Geelong and have someone like Dangerfield fall into your lap due to the go home factor. Also superstar A graders usually cost a lot with players and/or picks which someone like Crouch won't.

Have to be aiming for top 4 / flag next year with:

25+ senior core of:
Ryder, Hill, Hanners, Crouch, Carlisle, Ross, Membrey, Jones, Billings, Marshall Steele, Wilkie, Howard - 13

Plus a pretty talented sub 25 younger group in:
Butler, Lonie, Long, Gresham, Battle, Paton, Clark, Coffield, King, Bytel - 10

Make of that 23 what you will.

You don't bring in Tarrant for backup.

Don’t disagree with a back up ruck but clutching at straws to suggest battle is a key back option, and marsh and clav as keys ... you look at Brisbane with Gardiner going out abd Payne coming in .. we didn’t really have that type of option when Carlisle was out .. even last year rance going down they’ve replaced him with astbury balta etc ..

Joyce is the interesting one because when I saw him play I thought he was a competent back up full back .. but coaches didn’t have any confidence to put him in this year .. but have kept him on the list

Understandable given how Caldwell matches our long term needs more, but when considered in isolation, Crouch instantly makes us better.

Then fans really need a reminder: Caldwell has played about 11 games total for about the same number of disposals per game. He passes the eye test and hopefully becomes a star, but he still has a long way to go.

EDIT: Crouch is ready to go and improves our midfeild immediately. And at 26 we should expect a good amount of football out of him even though he's had his injuries.

I'm not sure Adelaide necessarily match the offer, even if it's not band one. If Caldwell does nominate us, there's a chance we give GWS our first pick. Then a future first comes into the conversation. There's a lot of ifs and maybes by matching the offer, whereas taking the compensation should get them at worst, an end of first rounder.
