It’s his career. If he’s getting more money and he thinks he’ll get more opportunities as a midfielder at Essendon, then I can’t really blame him going there. If Heppell plays half back and Merrett plays wing, Caldwell is a clear top 4 mid for them. At the saints, he’s behind Steele, Crouch, Jones and Ross for midfield minutes. Then there’s Clark, Hanners and Gresham to compete with too.

I would have thought Essendon have more midfield depth than us. Shiel is not really playing anywhere else. Mc Grath and Parish probably looking to start in the mids full time, Zaka, Heppell, Merrett. It's got some top end and some developing players. Both sides have some older players and some kids coming through.

I've watched all 3 games. The Geelong game 2-3 times.

09 on replay we were very lucky a few times to be in front. The Milburn free kick in the goal square is an absolute shocker if you are a neutral. Milne, Schneids and Mini all missing sitters/dribble kicks kills us. Roo is hammered all day, he was spent by the end. I'll never understand the Ball move. Tell him to go tag/KO Bartel to free up Lenny FFS sake!

10 was the opposite. We played like sh*t early but then we played very well after half time. Ross made a series of game winning moves but the Pies took the few chances they had.

The replay was a disaster. Ross went back to the original setup and the Pies took their chances and buried us. We made those moves again after half time and had a couple of opportunities to try and get back in the game but couldn't convert.

I've never watched 97 back...
Ive seen 97 and honest opinion.
Besides that 5 minute period that coincides with Barry going nuts. I never felt like we are the side well on top and dominating. I constantly felt like the crows matched us.

I’ve seen the draw. As a neutral- I imagine it was a great game of footy.
As you touched on, Ross ditching the unique match winning moves on the day killed us.

I think kosi doesn’t get enough recognition for the draw. Immense.
That Sam Fisher kick late in though.... went aggressive and pulled it .... leads to maxwell marking etc.... just go the kick to Kosi. He was clear. At worst it’s a collision and we probably lock the ball in at half forward.

It wouldnt surprise me if the Dunkley camp is looking around with Bevo insisting on using him as a 2nd ruck at times and publicly claiming he won't bring in anyone to help out English.

A lot of these rumours aren't started in a vacuum. Managers actively pursue the best interests of their clients both monetarily and for their success in an environment that will bring out their best.

Would not be surprised at all if this was a cage rattler from the Dunkley camp.

I thought that initially too, but I reckon we bat deeper. Merrett played a lot of footy on the wing this year so I could see that continuing. It sounds like Heppell is going to play half back more, and Zaka is a forward these days. Would leave Shiel, McGrath, Parish and Caldwell and their main centre square mids. Even if Merrett and Heppell went in at times, Caldwell is definitely top 6 there.

At St Kilda, he’s probably 7th or 8th in line behind Steele, Crouch, Jones, Ross, Gresham, Clark and Hannebery when fit. Even if Gresham plays forward, he’s still a long way back in the queue.

Doesn't the compensation take into account other players traded in to the team that the fa is leaving?
I think we will work out a sweetheart deal for someone like Dunstan or Webster (not Dmac) to head to Adelaide for a pick and then we will load up Crouch's contract so they get pick 2.

We end up with Crouch and a future 2nd
Crows get #2, Dunstan and Port's 3rd

Something like that.

Crows dont want spook
And everyone over here saying theyll match to get our 15
Youd think we would get that 19 back
Worst case scenario for us i think

Im sure they're gonna match and be knobs about it

(I have no contacts and am not itk)
In a draft as unique as this one.

what difference does 5-6 spots in the draft make?
Literally - there is no form guide on most of these kids this year. Who I rate as 12th best. You might think is 24th best.

I personally can’t see them matching. Makes no sense. We won’t pay overs i.e multiple picks.
They won’t get any of our better players.
it’s illogical for them to match unless they decide to keep him - in which case they have to reverse and patch up a relationship that they made clear they were happy to divorce.

I'm just going off the most recent examples of each of the compo bands and what the media reported their contracts as being.

Jay Clark and Sam McClure both said yesterday that the deal was 4 years, 600k with a trigger for a 5th so when comparing that to the last time the AFL dished out band 1 and band 2 compo, that aligns closer to band 2 and suggests we would need to up our offer significantly to move into band 1 compo.
Yep, but we don't now how far off any of those contracts were from being band one or 2.

If we believe the report that Rockliff was very close to band one it tells us we aren't really that far apart, definitely not 200k.

We also don't know which report is correct with his contract. Some have said 600, some have said 650-700.

It takes into account if a team has FA leave and arrive. Carlton didn't get a pick for Eddie Betts leaving because they then signed Dale Thomas.

If they trade player sin though, that is irrelevant.

Dons are a shambles. We are a much more attractive proposition right now.
It depends what Caldwell wants though.

If he wants more cash and guaranteed midfield time from rd1, then Essendon is the best choice for him.

If he is interested in playing finals much quicker and willing to fight for a mid spot, then we are the better choice

The last band 1 compo was for Tom Lynch who went on a contract worth 1 million, 7 year deal.

Scott Lycett was band 2 on a contract of 600k for 5 years.

Crouch contract looks much closer to being what Lycett is getting than what Band 1 is on.

And when Williams and Cameron are both leaving on deals worth 850k, it is hard to justify giving a higher compo pick for for Crouch's deal.
The thing is, the TPP is about to be cut by %10 or more, so for new contracts you have to adjust that scale.

If $750k got you a band 1 last year, then $680k should do it this year, or something like that.

Plus there's the secret herbs and spices of the AFL discretionary element thats there to provide lower finishing teams with better compo than a high finishing team would get for exactly the same player.

I don't really think anyone can surmise at this point what it's gonna be.
Nor does it matter to us anyway.

Agreed. But the fact that they're a shambles has to come into his thinking.

So in our corner we have #SaintsFooty, Dr Spaceman, St Kilda UK Fans, Brian Speaking and some random bomber supporter on the main thread.

Against essentially Tom Browne and Tim Watson who are obviously being fed info by essendon.

I guess we shall see which way the cookie crumbles but don't think we should count ourselves out. Who was picking we were going to get crouch?

I’m going to remind the board of this.
When we signed Carlisle - all the talk prior to his decision being public was that he was going to Carlton.
Moorabbin Ghost and I told you all - he was signing.

then there was the Hawthorn drama and againGhost said he would Get traded to us.

the bloke gets sound info. Back him in.

As I said even with crouch, he is a solid pre season from being a permanent fixture in the 22. But he would probably be playing seniors for round 1-2 anyways with Crouch’s ban.

I think it’s more money - which would honestly be a motivator for everyone, if as reported it is a wild offer from the bombers.
