Edmunds seems to think we'll be signing him on a bigger deal than originally reported, but there might he a dodgy deal in there to help sweeten the contract.

Pick 20 for Dunstan would be nice

It's great to have the mathematician on board (Darren O'Shaughnessy) to work out the value of losing TPP space v getting a better pick.

Do we need another developing mid in Caldwell? Seems the strategy is to accelerate our progress and getting someone like Crouch puts us in the window from next year if we can add some key position depth. I'm comfortable missing out and picking up and established mid over the next year or two to finish our midfield.

If you read a couple of ITKs we seem to have a plan to rotate mids through the small forward spots and have only Butler as a permanent fixture there. That means we can play three mid rotations outside our starting midfield set up, Potentially Hunter Clark or others could legitimately rotate from a back flank as well and even players like Battle could roll out time in the wings if not given a full time KP role. It will add a bit of unpredictability and add to our capacity to carry more mids.

Both Jay Clark and Sam McClure (on footy classified) yesterday went with 600k for 4 years with a lot of triggers to get a 5th year.

Mitch Cleary and Tom Morris went with 650k for 4 years with triggers for a 5th.

Edmund has gone with between 3-4 million over 5 years.

McClure and Morris have the best track records when it comes to St Kilda.

Depend how we do it. If we add a couple of late picks we can argue that the draft points is a lot lower than pick 20 I suppose.
Can see how they block it? We rate Couch and value him accordingly.

Later on we trade with Adelaide who are after an inside pig to replace Crouch. they Dunstan @ a mid second rounder and we say, fair enough.

Two separate deals, how is it tampering?

It’s what the current grand finalists do.

bat deep and generally everyone gets a run on ball. It allows dusty and danger to be damaging up forward.

Billings Gresh and Steele would add value up forward for us for example.

With Crouch coming I'm less concerned about Caldwell. I'd be hoping next year that Clark pushed into the midfield and we look to give Bytel and Byrne's some time as well. It's going to be hard to give them all time.
Looks like the specialist small forwards might be struggling to get a game.
Yeah I've been super-keen on the idea of Caldwell, but now that Crouch has nominated us, I'm a lot more ambivalent about the idea.

As good as he could be in the long term, it's not like he's likely to make a significant difference to our flag chances in the next two years, and if we miss out on him, it just potentially means we have an extra $500K PA available next year, to offer to someone who really could make a significant difference to our flag chances in 2022 (and beyond). Like a Josh Kelly type. Someone who could really tip us over the line.

And we then get to take this year's first (that we'd probably have otherwise used on Jye) to the draft, and maybe then we could use it on a really quick and skilful type, that we could probably use more now than another inside specialist. Maybe a Shai Bolton type.

Or we could draft another Coffield type, to potentially free up Hunter to play mainly midfield, if needed.

With Steele, Crouch, Jones, Seb, Gresh, Hannas, Hunter, Sincs, Bytel and Byrnes as inside options (10 of them!), it's not like the guts is still a desperate immediate need- like say 3-4 years ago, when we batted 4 deep there!

That's plenty of options for the short to medium term.

Yes it will be great if we get Jye, but it will be far from the end of the world if we don't, now that Crouch looks like coming and we will presumably be keen to get games into Bytel as well.

If Jye comes, it's probably a lot less likely that the latter happens any time soon.

We'll be fine either way.

What's the go with Witherden?

Is that still on the cards?
I thought I heard he was still contracted but Brisbane open to trading him. Very interested but doubtful we’ll get him. :(

SEN saying we have offered Crouch 700-800 per year for 5 years?! If that is so, then Adelaide will get high compensation. Also mentioned that a trade of Webster possible. Jye Caldwell was stated still as an option but thought this had dropped with the Crouch deal however not out of contention.
If you watch the footy shows, they say the deal for Crouch is around 600k for 4 years with a 5th trigger? SEN seems to be the only difference of opinion.
Wrong.. made up figures

From reports. He is very well paid by the lions. So someone will need to take salary on for him.

Anything on Fiorini or Brodie? Are they even in the picture if Jye falls over?

If we're offering a bit of extra coin for Crouch to ensure we don't give up any picks for him, I'm happy with it. Much prefer that than giving up pick 15. We've been talking for years about getting our cap/team to a position where we can add a quality FA in.

I'm a bit surprised North haven't gone hard at Caldwell. They'd have endless cap room with their outgoing players and he fits their age profile well.

No idea. I personally don’t think Brodie is a need or a want. His disposal is horrific and can’t get a game at GC.

Crouch might have bad disposal. But you get clearances and leather poisoning. He is a BnF winner and has a high ceiling if we get him and keep him fit.
Caldwell is also explosive and can rotate inside outside or on a flank.

I would say no chance on Brodie.

So something like we offer him $750k x 4 but Adelaide pay $150k of that. Would that actually be allowed or is it only when taking on an existing contract (like Stuv last year)?

Crows would prob do it to get picks 1 and 2 and I don’t think they would be looking to max out their cap with their current list.

Yeah, I'm all for it. To have a permanent small forward spot you need to have Charlie Cameron like ability to score or an unbelievably strong pressure game or a good combination of both. Not many one dimensional players survive in today's game.

Nup, we'd be up for the entirety of the deal. His contact with Adelaide is finished.

I still maintain split our picks IF we can’t get Caldwell. If if If.

then use them on those two and a future second for witherden.

Crouch probably ruins the need for him, now you say that.

Why should we be spend an extra 100-200k a season from our salary cap just to feed into Adelaide delusions of pick 2?

It sounds more like we would ask for Fiorini and 2MP.

If it means bringing in a decent pick - after a few years of trading out our own. I’m happy to do it.
That pick could be used on Caldwell for example - if it was pick 20 in a hypothetical.
