Yay! My vote was just included at the Democratic National Convention as part of the 7 votes for Joe Biden for President from Democrats Abroad.

She was chosen in the same way an Idol contestant is. She was sold as s struggling minority bartender when in fact she grew up as Sandy Cortez in a very well off suburb.

I agree* she is entirely fake.

*This is not the Bay so this is a one-off.
I love how much she scares the right. They'd rather not hear from people like her. Maybe they can pretend she's 'fake' and will just go away like a miracle.

Why did one of the states not vote?

Why did one of the states not vote?
Do you mean Delaware? They did vote at the end of the roll call. The usual tradition was that the home state(which normally was the state the candidate represented) would pass on the vote if the state came up alphabetically before the candidate had achieved the number of votes to win the nomination. Then, out of courtesy, the state poised to give the winning vote would yield to the candidate's home state. After that, the roll would be continued. It was a bit anti-climatic for the rest of the vote. This was new. I think it was a good idea to wait until the end for Biden's home state of Delaware to vote. It seemed like a compromise to a tradition. Even modern roll calls already know the final outcome. It meant more "back in the day".

Just like conservatives love how trump scares the left. Two sides of the same coin.

Pathetic. How about we love how politicians inspire, help those who need it, creat fairness and lead by example rather than love fear.

Thanks, hope you don't mind me asking questions. I find this fascinating and my first real look how it is conducted.

Can't wait until next week and who the speakers will be.:D

Gop is rumoured to be making a major change

Tradition has been the nominee only speaks on the final day. Apparently Trump wants to give a speech every day.

This may sound minor, but conventions in the USA are very much about a celebration of party and tradition. Its why they still go through the farce of publicly nominating candidates state by state, even though everyone knows the outcome already.

If it does become all nights featuring trump, it's a confirmation the GOP has become the party for trump pretty much completely.

Scary thing is the GOP with another candidate would crush the Dems. Lincoln Project and Republicans against Trump are leaving them for dead in the marketing stakes, and the battle is in the suburbs - moderate GOP heartland

Think you may be right, it will be all about him and ...

Shame I am not a drinker as I was thinking of every time he mentions the economy-sniff; left-sip; riots or violence-gulp, sleepy joe-drink from the bottle, anything else I would miss as most likely will down and out.

That's OK. Ned seems to know his stuff as well as a couple of others on here. I'm just trying to stay out of the s***show that these threads have become. Not worth my time, though I have plenty of it. :)

I did notice that you mentioned in one of the other threads that you thought today's program was boring. If you think so, then imagine how a normal convention would be. Most of it is just a show, meant for earlier days. However, when you grow up on the stuff, it becomes fascinating in this day and age. Back then the writing of a party platform was important. I'm not so sure about now. One reason Bernie stayed in the race was to get some input into the policies of the party for the election, I believe. However, I'm not really sure as to the mechanics of this convention.

What's interesting to me if how well prepared this "show" has been so far. It's almost like watching a summary of what normally happens with a bit more input from "regular" Americans on screen. I'm sure that next week's convention will be similar. It'll be interesting as to what will be produced.

I might have mentioned in a previous post months ago that my most valued political souvenir is a small donkey on a string which was worn at the 1944 Democratic National Convention(I believe it was) by the father of the woman who was my supervising teacher almost 50 years ago when I was student teaching. I can only imagine what her father would have thought about this year's conventions!

I am looking forward to the last two days especially Kamala's introduction.

Ned mentioned that Trump may break tradition of speaking on the last day and speak every day. I actually am looking forward to the lineup of speakers they will have and how different it will be.

She doesn't care me at all. She is an awful choice.

Most of the CNN poll tightening was due to a 21 point flip amongst non-whites. They do not like her.

the million dollar question actually on the GOP convention will be how their "show" will look.

this point was made on the NPR politics poddy on the weekend, but the Dems have been preparing for a virtual convention for several months. The GOP cancelled North Carolina in June, and cancelled Jacksonville on July 24. That gives them just over three weeks in comparison to prepare a virtual convention.

This matters because of the point Chicago made. A convention is about hyping the base - getting organizers, delegates, and volunteers breathing fire so that they return home for the final months of the campaign fully motivated to do what needs to be done. This used to be done with the speakers, music, and more balloons and bunting than you can poke a stick at. most of this doesnt work on zoom.

now the other thing conventions have done is produce soundbites. people still remember Palin's hockey mum joke (whats the difference between a hockey mum and a pit bull? lipstick), and Ann Richards on George Bush (he was born with a silver foot in his mouth). While 45 minute speeches are okay in a convention, they dont make good tv. soundbites are good tv, and are excellent for creating viral moments that can be re-tweeted.

early days are showing the dems have pivoted to less focus on the rah-rah, and getting the base motivated with the viral moments.

Trump is great for these (better than most), but a convention cannot be just him. the GOP need to fill multiple days that will be interesting to watch on a PC screen, and will engage the base. how well they pivot from live (which is a trump domain) to online will be a challenge. Trump is esp good live, so this is a tough one as they would have been banking on him lighting up a packed crowd (he really feeds off of their energy). Trump cannot fall for the trap of reading a teleprompter

I've warmed up to Kamala the past week, well, you know what I mean... I talked to my Republican brother the other day and he's OK with her so he'll be voting for Biden at this stage.

New traditions are being made possible with these conventions. I see no reason to keep the same format so the incumbent President speaking prior to the last day is OK with me. I did read that the couple who held up their guns while a BLM protest went by their home in St Louis will speak as well at the MAGA capped Kentucky Catholic School kid in DC for the RTL gathering. I wonder if any known Democrats who are supporting Trump will speak. I doubt that any former Republican President will speak. ;)

I've been watching YouTube videos of the election night results the past week. They even have the coverage of the 1964 election. I was mesmerized by Barry Goldwater as a 12 year old. I've grown up since. :)

I agree. I have no doubt that the GOP have been working 24/7 on their convention show since the decision was made. Having some of the speeches taped makes sense since without a huge audience what does it matter? However, Trump needs to be live with some sort of a crowd to be at his best. On the WH lawn with a thousand people would work, but I don't know if that's possible. Having him at a podium inside the WH with few there would not be as effective at all. I guess this is the new kind of normal we have to face. I wonder if he will speak mainly to his base, or try for an expansion of it. People know what he's like now, unlike four years ago when many people were willing to take a chance on him. His tone will be important, especially if he wants to win back the suburbs which were lost to the Dems in 2018. However, whatever he says or does, I'm sure he'll be "entertaining" as usual.:)

The White House is federal property owned by the American people, it’s actually illegal to campaign there under the Hatch Act. Hasn’t stopped him before and no doubt will not stop him again, but just fwiw

That's what I thought until I read this:

Trying to keep up with the news and all of the political and legal dealings seem especially difficult nowadays.

early signs are he's doubling down on his base, i'd expect more red meat to be thrown

What poll tightening, and why would it be her fault?
