That's exactly the same as we did with our recruiting in 2019 when we traded in Hill, Butler and Jones and drafted Byrnes.

I find it funny that you list those guys as fast but the ones I listed aren't.

No point arguing I guess.

We don't have much line breaking pace apart from Jones. That's why I don't understand losing Hind, he was a proper high speed line breaker.

There aren't that many of those types in every team. I wouldn't call most of the guys you said had pace at Melbourne line breaking.

I think that has a lot to do with where you are playing on the ground to get that label tbh. It's mostly half backs or sometimes mids. Hill definitely looked line breaking coming off half back to me.

Yes, we made a mistake with Hind, but we aren't allowed to mention that.

Apparently we will draft a quick half back this year with our first, hopefully that cheers you up 😉

To be fair if you look at a best 22 I struggle to see whos spot Hind takes. He was always depth, good depth but thats all.

If they cant play alongside Marshall, then there is no point playing them at all because Marshall would be better than them playing as the sole ruck.

Then we would be finding a VFL ruck to play incase of emergencies.

I'd be perfectly happy if we had a starting ruck spending 70% of the game rucking with Marshall playing 60% forward, 30% ruck and 10% bench.

Just because Smith hasn't flourished as a backup ruck doesn't mean he can't work well with a capable forward/ruck like Marshall

Thats why im suprised we havent offered a contract to Kent
I'll bite....why would you offer a contract to kent? The side is trying to improve - not go backwards. Out with kent, Lonie, Geary and Long. These blokes are too small, or to slow or just not good enough. Imagine the grin on the opposition players face having to play on one of those players....

Or the game passes him by entirely.

I just don’t see a midfielder in coff.

I see more a Luke Hodge that needs to learn to dominate as a back half general.
I definitely don't see him making it on the inside as a mid, but I think hes clearly got the attributes to play on the wing. It's just whether he could learn to use them.

Half back is definitely his best role though, I've got no doubt about that.

Great for Tom that he’s gotten all of those individual achievements at the club - all the while our midfield is a mess at times because we have too many of the same type of midfielder and lack x-factor in the middle. Hence why losing him may be a blessing in disguise -
Our midfield could have looked one-paced because of how poorly it was performing.
Post bye, it and the team performed better. Add Nash and Jai and perhaps another and I think we will be better again.
Mitch gets more possessions than anyone. Not easy to replace.

Yes damn it! Get the whip out!
Am I the only one wondering what this post is about?

sorry i accidently included a bit about Tom MITCHELL that i was researching regarding the fact that different club with similar questions about midfield but it had nothing to do with COFF or your post....i corrected it now...apologies..the whip bit just a light hearted one liner re COFF.
Those lines above were Hawthorn posters that had formed that opinion about their midfield and loosing Tom MITCHELL and I couldn't help but see a similarity in the loss of say DUNSTAN and the sameness of our midfield and how we need that extra pace and skill execution upon acquisition/extraction.

Sticking Coff on the wing might teach him to start using his pace a bit more
C'mon Bird........How does that work? A player who is not quick as shown in his previous games all of a sudden gets faster because he is put on the wing. How do you teach someone to use their pace when they change positions? Why wasnt he using his pace on the HBF if he had any? So is he another of our quick players? Jeez , some of our players are getting around in disguise, making out they are slow but are actually quick......In one forum page they have gone from plodders to the quickest team in the land........

So Jones is our only quick player?

Right...
But there mids are like Usain Bolt - Viney , Brayshaw , Oliver , Pettracca , Langdon , Harmes they might want Dunstan for outside run he could most probably keep up to them.

All teams look fast when they win.

Melbourne are running hot and I expect them to win the flag but having 4 or 5 quick players in the team doesn't make them quick.
Bullen , Spargo , Salem , Bowey , Pickett (no game changes here except Pickett)- what makes them quick is there midfield win the ball and create overlap - beat them in clearance's it will be a different matter.

I'd say he's our only really noticeably fast player who actually puts it on the park. Guys that are quick and don't use it aren't quick. Guys like Howard are quick for their size but a lot of our pace isn't utilised. Kent is supposed to be a fast player but looks stodgy. Butler can get away from players but he needs to wind up. You are better to use the ball quick any way. I think Snags is slow of foot but quick of mind and I'd take him over Butler any day.
Membrey was mentioned to be one of our quickest over short distance , it's just a pity when he takes a mark he usually stops and never uses it.

The thing is if the win the ball and use it well , it will make any player look fast - this what made Diesel Williams and a guy like Barry Cable so good - they won the ball and dished it off to a player in a good position and they were far from fast.

Would'nt say it made them look fast. Those 2 you mentioned are 2 of the most skilful players who ever got on the park who were brilliant handballers. The general topic is a player who has a either a quick burst of speed or who can maintain good ground speed for the majority of a game. Two differnt things altogether.

Well he is quick Bill. That is a fact. You just have to look at his draft videos and his combine testing and it will tell you.

The issue is, whenever he gets the footy, instead of using his space he stops and props.

I'm not sure whether getting him up the ground would make him want to use his assets a bit more but maybe being under less pressure and having more pace might get him taking the game on a bit.

Instead of carrying on like a peanut have a look through his draft profiles.

"Coffield tested as one of the fastest players in the draft pool with a sub-three second 20m sprint time."

I realize that but if you plant it on the chest of a player constantly it should get from A to b a hell of lot quicker , Gawn tap , Oliver handball , Petrecca kick you couldn't get any faster play.
