LAND OF THE GIANTS

West Adelaide key-forward Harry Lemmey is the early pick to be the first tall taken in a draft set to be dominated by the big men, but he’s now facing competition from inside his own four walls.

After a blistering start to the SANFL under-18 season, Bloods teammate Tom Scully is rising up draft boards quickly.

The mobile 204cm forward, who spent time in the ruck during his bottom-age season, has booted a remarkable 33 goals in the opening six rounds of the under-18 competition – 13 more than any other player.

With his height and reach, Scully has been unstoppable in the air, taking 24 contested marks in six matches. The next-best player has 16.

The 17-year-old’s running patterns make him equally as hard to stop on the lead, too, with Scully recording a total of 39 marks inside-50.

And his ability to win the ball at ground level for a player of his standing has also impressed onlookers so far in 2022.

“The potential for Tom to continue to develop over the next 12 to 24 months is quite big,” West Adelaide under-18 coach Paul Streatfield told The Advertiser.

“It’s pretty unusual to find someone as tall as him that is as co-ordinated with their kicking, but also as good at ground level as what he is.

“There’s no obvious gap in his game and I don’t think he’s yet worked out exactly how good he could be.”

It’s set to be a big another draft for the Bloods - the club that delivered Riley Thilthorpe to the Crows in 2020 - with 18-year-old Kobe Ryan named to make his senior debut on Saturday.

The classy midfielder has followed on from his standout bottom-age season to average 156 Champion Data ranking points at under-18 level this year, and looms as a first-round contender.

Skillful ruckman Harry Barnett is another West Adelaide tall on the radar.

Scully had another 4 goals (& 1 point), 17 disposals and 3 contested marks yesterday.

He will fairly easily end up with the biggest state level under 18 tally that I can remember from a draft prospect.

Averaging 5.3 goals a game at the moment.

I’m a little worried that all of the 3 guys I want in Lemmey, Scully and Busslinger could be off the table by about pick 6. (In no particular order)

1. Ashcroft
2. Wardlaw
3. Tsatas
4. Lemmey
5. Scully
6. Busslinger

He has a late birthday too doesn’t he? If he’s played basketball at all he’s Hines wet dream.

Yeah he’s a November birthday (DOB: 02-11-2004).

So he’d be one of the youngest. And yeah, Hine loves those late birthday draftees.

I see Lemmey was quiet in reserves. Just a behind to his name.

We'll have to remember not everyone will go for a tall, depending on their list needs.

Most teams would be silly not to be considering the top end tall talents this year IMO. Particularly since they will still be best available picks at the extreme top end of the draft.

The reality is that they will all likely be taking 3-5 years to come through.

Even teams with super young elite key forwards like Max and Ben King should be considering them to build a dominant pairing.

yeah, some top end mids that probably will be ahead of some of these talls, so hopefully one of them drops to us.

Seriously if we draft anyone under 195 this year I might actually melt.

Yes I am well aware they will all be under 180cms now I’ve said that.

I would be sort of Okay IF it's a Inside Mid that can win Clearances

Would not mind Drafting a Number 1 Type Ruck Prospect late in Draft or even Rookie Draft

Lemmey dropped back to reserves footy.

There’s a fair chance that Scully has now overtaken him, just on output, despite not playing senior footy.

The only basis you could argue on performance that he hasn’t, is that if you were to believe Lemmey would be delivering the same dominance as Scully at under 18 level. (It’s also not like Lemmey exactly turned it on in the State rep games last year)

Busslinger probably coming too, given his exploits over in the west.

Thoughts PMBangers ?

Looking at our list I think we need a key backman (lockdown defender) another creative half back flanker, key forward, inside midfielder and whoever is best available ideally another quick small forward at the right time. We have 2 Cat B spots so would be worth investing one on a ruck. Interesting to see if we can nab one of these needs in the mid season draft.

James Van Es:
Henry Hustwaite:
Jackson Broadbent:
Olivier Northam:

List of the ones I found in 5 mins searching.

Seems that most are encouraged to play basketball to improve their spatial awareness, athleticism, etc.

We got Kreuger last year but could not play 2 Games without having a Season Ending Surgery

Hopefully Krueger can get over his injury run, as he definitely has the talent to be a key forward for us at AFL level. It's a concern though he has only played 24 games of footy ( including VFL) after 4 years in the AFL system....
