Given we are on the slide, its solidified my view that it’s in our long term best interests to let DeGoey walk as a Free Agent.

Particularly whilst we do still have enough older guys like Pendles, Adams, Howe, Roughie etc to lead the youngsters.

We really need to build this spine and getting two of Scully, Lemmey and Busslinger as those top end key position talents could set up our future.

Obviously nothings guaranteed, but it would be a great foundation.

If we could also then turn those 3 thirds into something like Brisbanes first it would be a perfect draft hand.

I’ve done a 360 on Degoey as well. He won’t be with us in his prime during contention. He will want $. Both those reasons to me suggest we should let him go. He’s so inconsistent and not up there with Martin, bont etc as players who continually perform. How many All Australians? Brownlow votes? Copelands? Get two top 10 picks to help rebuild.

This is the path I am leaning towards also. Even if we can jump back into the second round. Imo we need a combo of 2xKPP + 1xMid with pace. How we chose to attack that strategy I don’t care just needs to be done.

It would also be hard to pass up someone like Keeler at that third pick.

In throwing out these hypotheticals, I can’t help be a bit concerned that another team, Gold Coast in particular, has more attractive picks for Brisbane to deal with to secure their points though.

Agree with this strategy perfectly. Hope they low ball de goey to tempt him into considering other options, and attack this draft hard. 2× top 10 with another in the top 25 would be a great hand and set up as well going forward, without losing a great deal of current value

I’m not big on throwing high picks at KPD. There’s other avenues to cover
It, even failed KPF who have the attributes. elite mids and KPF for me in the first round
Agree, other than weitering, moore and may, most of the current kpds were not high draft picks. Dunn and roughhead have been really good for us and essentially cost nothing. Plenty of avenues to scout similar types not currently playing senior level.

And cap space. A first rounder and cap space is going to be worth a lot more in the long run. Could be 2 x 1sts, 1 x 2nd (after trading the 3rds) and a FA to come in 2023. Would be huge.

I think our future midfield is looking pretty dire, so if a top midfield talent is available for our first pick, it'd be hard to resist. It sounds like a draft where picks in the 10-20 range would be valuable for us, as it's a pretty hit and miss range and there seems to be more talls in that range than normal.

And with the option of using 2023 1st to trade in another first or upgrade.

Either way, whether we’re using that first in 2023 along with securing a FA, or trading it in to this year, it’s another premium asset a chance to bolster our starting lineup.

Due to the poaching premium, free agent that we use JDG money for is likely to be a fair way below JDG and in 2023, a maximum of one year younger.

We are waaaaaaay worse off for KPP’s. They are non existent.
Still got to get the ball down to them.
Seems like top end draft midfielders are generally top AFL players.

KPP on the other hand seem to be more hit and miss early in the draft.

On probabilities, a top 5 pick should be used on the best midfielder.

Still have next year’s 1st who we may be able to trade for a top 10/12 pick if one of those talls we like is there.

Time to get a bit lucky and buck the trend imo. Some quality talls this year imo.

the best teams have the best spines, if we are lucky enough to have 2 picks in the 1st rd then we need key position players and I think we need a young ruck also Moyle would have been perfect I like Begg and I think he is a goer but too small for 1st ruck and always will be, the spine is the most important,
.
I think we could do with a mid or 2 but the spine is the most important.

If you think KPP’s are hit and miss early in the draft, you should check out the probabilities of them making the grade later in the draft.

Most of the top line key forwards in the game have been taken as at least first round selections (or should have been ie Hawkins, Cameron)

Sure but it could be on a KPP, which we have only one of and are rarely in the right part of the draft to pick up, rather than an inconsistent midfielder.

I'm trying to think of a currently 25 year old KPP who would fit the bill? it would depend for me on what draft pick we got for JDG compensation.

Personally, I wouldn't want to lose him at all, as I think we'll be woeful without him and I don't particularly want to watch a JDG less Collingwood for the next few years, just looking at whether pick 7 or whatever + likely free agent does actually become worthwhile in terms of value.

I think it would be a lot easier to bring in quality mids (inside / outside / accumulators) via trading / free agency than quality KPP
We need to get a few in the door and developing

Ben McKay in 2023 I hear is a possibility.

Can someone, anyone, at collingwood please ring the Rioli, Pickett, Jetta and Motlop families and ask them if they have any 16year old sons. Then we do what the eagles did with Brett heady and hide him in a bush league until we can draft him.

For what Degoey wants $ wise, what’s he done. How many all Australians? copelands? Brownlow votes? We hold him in such high esteem, but players on his $ in other teams are a step above. He’s a good player but not a star. We can def lose him. I’ve 100% flipped, I think we need to trade him

More Key position forward misses than hits in the top 5.

We had Grundy and Lynch then so did not really need another Ruck at that time and Begg more a KPP then Ruck anyway
