You would think given the list size, you would be able to leave some wiggle room...

I’m still shaking my head how we are so tight for list spots this year and have so many out of contract for next year.

What the * are they doing with that whiteboard?

We seem afraid of the one year contract

Andrew McPherson
Lachie Murphy
Elliott Himmelberg
Patrick Parnell
Matt Crouch
Lachlan Sholl
Fischer McAsey
Ned McHenry

All of these guys signed two year contracts that for many probably could have been one year. Sholl and McHenry both signed for another two years before their final years (effectively locking them in for 3 years from the time of signing)

Jones signed a 3 year contract extension in his first season. Milera signed a five year contract. O'Brien a four year contract.

That's nearly a dozen players on contracts that are too long or we were trigger happy with

We'll need our 2023 1st in 2023, given the number of players we have coming out of contract - many of whom won't (shouldn't) be on our list in 2024.

Rankine was our top level recruit for 2022. Don't expect another, or you will be disappointed.
How many highly talented 190cm South Australian midfielders are in next years draft?
I’d be keen to trade our 2023 first and 23 for the Phillipou pick and a later 2023 pick.
We still fill a vacancy with that later pick. Won’t be as good as a top ten pick, but we’ll already have one.

The Matt Crouch two year deal still puzzles me

Why not just trade next year's first for an established midfielder?
And trade 2024 first round pick for another player too.

Drafting doesn't need to be the only way to improve the list.

My guess is that they thought with a year playing under his belt they could trade him with 1 year on contract so as to get something half decent back. It has not panned out that way as accumulating slower inside mids are right out of vogue right at the wrong time for us

So just another Reid stuff up that he's not accountable for.

That was obvious a year ago when we gave him 2 years. Just dumb.

2-year contracts, or longer, are the norm - all around the AFL.

The only reasons a player gets a 1-year contract are:
  • Rookie list players
  • Dead men walking
  • Aged 30+
Whether we should be offering 4+ year contracts is another matter entirely, but 2 years is absolutely bog standard across the entire competition. It's the default setting, unless there are pressing reasons why the contract should be longer or shorter.

Was he trigger happy with the Soligo and Taylor deals too?

Nor at all... but we should be offering different deals depending on the player... & overall giving us enough flexibility for turnover each year.

Isn't it better to have more list vacancies in a strong Draft ....versus a thin Draft this year ?

Also don't mind the strategy of assessing the list, after going hard for 3 years ....give the list a chance to develop, you need to see a lot more than 10 games

You give players two year contracts when there's no outside interest or you don't care if they leave for nothing. Otherwise there's no benefit to the club.

I have a guy like Matt Crouch or Andrew McPherson in that category. Who was coming for them? Did it matter if they left? How replaceable are they?

We have zero list spots this year without delisting and moving a player to the rookie list and we only plan on selecting 2 players! Why? Because we haven’t been able to move on contracted players we no longer want.

As for next year, we are clamouring for draft picks to help us fill list spots and we aren’t accumulating decent picks, they are back end picks.

Nothing about what we have done for these 2 drafts is a strategy. It’s a calamity.

The thing is Phillipou is a genuine Midfielder/Forward, in fact probably more proven as a forward than a midfielder at this point in time. IMO he's as good at both roles and there's every possibility he hasn't stopped growing yet.

I’m sold mate. Here we have exactly the player we need and IMO must get. I have a gut feeling we’ll look back in a decade and realise we missed Pavlich again.
