I can’t see them leaving much money behind, might as well see out the year

I'm not following mate.

So Brown/Gibbs retire with a year to go on their contract, why do we pay him for that year if he chose to retire before the contract was up?
Or do I have it all wrong?

I believe in both cases they were encouraged to retire, therefore they’d still be offered a large chunk of their salary. Otherwise they should see out the year and receive full pay.

Remember it’s in our interest to create list spot and manage salary cap.

The way I see it, we are 1 developing Ruck and 1 ready to go KPD off having a balanced list. Also missing 1 developing KPD if McAsey sadly doesn't play for us again.

Would hope that we pick up a KPD in the SPP at least, though I'm worried we will use that on Turner instead. We will be in big trouble if Butts gets injured this year.

I wonder if we're gonna trend towards a more intercept-based defense, with Worrell at the CHB post (Aliir-like role) and Doedee as the 3rd tall. Allows Michalanney to slot in easily in a couple of years, too

Will mean we have one of Butts/Murray as depth, as well as Borlase I guess. Still think we're probably one KPD short, though (whether it be a young prospect or experienced stop-gap)

The worry is when you play a side with a couple of big talls - you are short on one and thats the one they (opposition) will play through. Think in coming seasons the Bulldogs- JUH and Naughton with English resting down there..we will be stretched to the hilt

no doubt this was posted a while back as its old news, but Burgess is absolutely seeing Izak Rankine as a midfielder

Good point, maybe even Sam Darcy too! That said, would be interesting to see how the league is trending in regards to tall/small forward line setups, I'm sure there's data on it somewhere

Admittedly, my gut feel is that we'll end up going with the Butts/Murray/Worrell/Doedee combo next year while Michalanney develops, with Worrell switching to CHB in the event of an injury to one of our regular KPDs. Looking at the long term, though, one of Butts/Murray is going to have to become more dynamic beyond their ability to lock down, otherwise MM is going to overtake them on talent

Cheers mate. That's kinda what I was thinking. These post retirement payments still fall under the cap though right?

And it’s true because a) the position barely matters anymore b) the difference between good and bad rucks is meh

It's that simple.

A good midfield will feast of any Champion Ruckman if he's tapping it to traffic cones these days.

The greatest value you extract from a Ruckman is what he contributes around the ground in general play.

I'm convinced teams don't even drill stoppage setups anymore. Just tap and hope.

I am a bit old skool...one of my favorite rucks was clark keating at brisbane. Started the game with socks down and mouth guard hanging out and walloped the ball 30 metres forward at centre bounce and if he took a piece of the oppo ruck so be it. Tough as teak.

Too much fancy stuff these days and not enough variation to clear the space and take the advantage away from the opposition dominant mids getting their hands on it first. More variation with rucking i say

Pfffft he never got a chance and we wasted his time.

I don’t know why we drafted an injured player midseason if we weren’t prepared to give him a look in
We smelled an SANFL flag

Rest up and play div 1 amateurs at TTG...he's not that banged up!

I'm sure they would have been happy for him to retire, but they wouldn't pay his whole salary out in that case as a parting gift, especially if it meant putting a squeeze on our TPP.

he wouldn't retire unless he got his full salary. It's that simple.

So what's the go with these retirement payouts? I'm naive I know, but does that basically suggest he, Gibbs etc were tapped on their shoulder's and wouldn't have retired otherwise?

gibbs certainly, he was actually still on the list but not needed at the club in any capacity at all. Why we didnt want him around for leadership is anyone's guess. But just ask yourself why Brown would choose to dump $300k instead of rolling up to the club and rehabbing all year. Footballers hang on for as long as possible as almost none are walking out and into a commensurate wage. We needed the list spot, so he had the upper hand and there's no way he discounts the contract meaningfully.

I reckon they banked on Crouch being gone, that removed all need for Turner and reduced a list spot
Correct …. Club thought Crouch would be gone & Turner would add some experience, especially as they didn’t know what condition Sloane would come back in , or how soon

On our ruck stocks, I think you only have to look at Geelong's premiership side this year. Stanley and Blicavs are not really what I'd call traditional lumbering ruck types, but extremely mobile and able to run all day. Granted that Sydney only had Hickey (prob a mistake on their part in the GF), but I think all you need as a ruckman is someone to break even - as long as you have a great midfield (which we appear to be slowly building). Even previous GF's, Gawn didn't have a great GF, but Jackson was a much more mobile option and was able to get on top. WC v Collingwood in 2018...WC employed two scrubbers (Vardy and Lycett) against Grundy (who dominated hitouts), but WC were still able to get across the line. My take is that clubs are more likely to select more mobile, multi-positional options now than the previous lumbering giants. I'd like us to try a Murray - with his crash and bash style (or God-forbid McAsey if he comes good) as potential rucks to backup RoB (whose time on ground should be reduced in future hopefully). TT of course is another option, resting up fwd.
